New Zealand v England 2nd Test

, , , ...

James Anderson claimed 5-73 with fine swing bowling as England took charge of the second Test against New Zealand.

Tim Ambrose made a maiden Test ton and Paul Collingwood 65 before the tourists were out for 342 on the second morning.

Anderson struck three times early on and returned to remove Ross Taylor (53) and Stephen Fleming (34), who added 71.

Daniel Vettori clubbed an unbeaten 50 but Collingwood (3-23) finished the Kiwis off for 198 and England were 148 ahead when they reached stumps on 4-0.

It was a thoroughly satisfying day for the tourists, although their advantage would have been even greater had their outfielding - particularly from Monty Panesar - been better.

With England resuming on 291-5, the early exchanges were all about Ambrose, who resumed as he had finished day one, groping uncertainly for deliveries outside off-stump from Jacob Oram.

After Collingwood had cut Kyle Mills to reach his half-century, the wicketkeeper edged Oram wide of the slips to make it to three figures in only his second Test.

Ambrose was not so lucky moments later when he edged another delivery from Mills into the hands of Taylor.

Stuart Broad was then bowled around his legs by Oram before Collingwood was lbw to a full swinging delivery from Mark Gillespie, who saw Ryan Sidebottom sky a pull and Panesar fend a catch to the keeper down the leg-side off successive deliveries to end with 4-79.

The movement through the air which had helped New Zealand was used by Anderson to devastating effect in an outstanding spell either side of lunch.

Matthew Bell was bowled playing around one which curved back in, Jamie How edged to first slip and Matthew Sinclair nicked behind.

Skipper Vettori swung his bat to good effect to boost his side's total

Fleming, who had been so fluent in Hamilton, opted for dogged defiance as he became the first New Zealander to pass 7,000 runs in Test cricket.

He was almost caught on 18 at second slip by Collingwood off Sidebottom and would have been run out but for a poor throw from Kevin Pietersen to bowler Panesar.

Anderson had him snapped up at point after tea to end his partnership with Taylor, who took the attack to England, though not always in a controlled manner.

The young right-hander, who made a century in the opening Test, was missed by Collingwood at second slip on 23 when he cut Broad hard.

But when Taylor got it right the ball disappeared in a flash, particularly through the covers, and he reached 50 in 74 balls.

However, after Fleming fell the door opened for England, with Sidebottom winning an lbw verdict against Oram with late swing and Taylor edging a beauty from Anderson to Ambrose.

Brendon McCullum (25) went on the offensive, getting after Anderson in one over which cost 15, and then smacking Broad down the ground to take his partnership with Vettori to 50 from only 31 balls.

A good low catch from Andrew Strauss at first slip off Broad sent McCullum packing, but Vettori continued swatting away.

The skipper pulled and drove with happy abandon and reached 50 off 42 balls by carving Broad over third man for six.

He ran out of partners, however, as Mills drove lazily to extra-cover off Collingwood, who then clean bowled Gillespie and Martin to secure his best Test bowling figures and a handy lead for his team.

Michael Vaughan and Alastair Cook took no chances in the five overs left, knowing their team was in a great position to ram home that advantage.

Barnsley 1-0 Chelsea

Kayode Odejayi's second-half header dumped holders Chelsea out of the FA Cup and gave Championship side Barnsley a shock place in the semi-finals.

The striker netted the winner from six yards out after connecting with Martin Devaney's superb right-wing cross.

Odejayi also had a shot saved by Carlo Cudicini, while team-mate Istvan Ferenczi's half-volley hit a post.

Chelsea's best chance fell to Joe Cole early in the second half. He struck his angled shot wide from close range.

Report: Barnsley 1-0 Chelsea
Interview: Barnsley boss Simon Davey
Interview: Chelsea boss Avram Grant

The last time Barnsley reached the semi-finals was in 1912 - and they went on to win their one and only FA Cup that season.

If they continue to show the sort of desire that has seen them overcome Premier League giants Liverpool and now Chelsea, then few would bet against them picking up their second title.

606: DEBATE
What did you think of Barnsley's shock Cup win?

The home side's good play started at the back, with Chelsea's Nicolas Anelka often left redundant by Stephen Foster and Dennis Souza, who gradually became adept at forcing the lone marksman out wide.

At the other end, Tykes frontman Odejayi was a huge nuisance to the visitors, using his bulk well while holding and releasing intellingently.

The only concern for the home support was that he had not scored since September.

But he came close to ending that barren run during a 60-second spell that saw Simon Davey's side squander two good opportunities.

The first fell to forward Ferenczi, whose volley struck the foot of Cudicini's left-hand upright.

Moments later, Odejayi forced his way into the area only to see his low angled shot pushed away by the Chelsea shot-stopper.

Avram Grant's men were limited to half-chances, with Cole twice denied by the impressive Robert Kozluk, who got his body in the way on both occasions to prevent the England international from netting.

Straight after the break, Cole was presented with his best opportunity to hand the visitors the lead, but once again his nemesis Kozluk did enough to force the midfielder to screw his shot wide from eight yards.

Chelsea cranked up the pressure in the second half, knowing that a replay would not benefit a team still fighting on two other fronts.

But try as hard as they did, the team lacked ideas and failed to carve open a stubborn Barnsley defence, even with the introduction of attacking duo Salomon Kalou and Claudio Pizarro.

And as Chelsea pressed forward, space was left at the back.

That space was exploited on the right wing by Devaney, who delivered a stunning ball to the far post for Odejayi to nod past the hapless Cudicini.

The Barnsley penalty area resembled the Alamo in the final 15 minutes, but somehow the home side held firm to book their passage into the last four.

NYRA, legislature reach agreement

, , , ...

TV online sports
The New York Racing Association and state legislative leaders have reached an agreement on a long-term extension to the association's franchise, averting a possible shutdown of racing at Aqueduct, according to officials involved in the negotiation.

The agreement, which would extend NYRA's franchise for 25 years in exchange for the state taking undisputed title to NYRA's three racetracks, was reached after two days of intense negotiations in Albany. A 190-page bill outlining the terms of the agreement was scheduled to go to the floor of the state legislature on Wednesday.

The agreement will bring to a close a tumultuous three-year battle over the fate of the franchise, which includes the right to operate Aqueduct, Belmont, Saratoga, and a yet-to-be-built casino at Aqueduct. NYRA has operated the three tracks since 1955, and a handful of companies lined up to seek the franchise over the past two years, motivated in large part by the casino.

NYRA is operating under a short-term extension that expires today. The Non Profit Racing Association Oversight Board, which has granted NYRA two short-term extensions over the past six weeks, is scheduled to meet on Wednesday night in order to discuss an additional short-term extension that would allow NYRA to operate until March 6. During that time period, NYRA is expected to strike a deal with the state and make the land transfer official.

Under the deal, NYRA will receive $75 million in order to help it fulfill its financial obligations under a reorganization plan the association has filed in bankruptcy court. NYRA filed for bankruptcy late in 2006. The association will also receive another $30 million from the state to fund its operations through 2008, if necessary.

The bill requires the state to select an operator for the Aqueduct casino, which was legalized in 2001. Construction of the casino has been blocked by state officials since the 2001 bill legalized slot machines at eight tracks in the state because of a combination of NYRA's legal and financial problems and the desire of politicians to steer the potentially lucrative casino contract to constituents.

NYRA officials were involved in discussions on Wednesday morning over the fine points of the bill, which changed several times on Tuesday night.

Also under the bill, NYRA's board will be comprised of 25 directors. Fourteen will be appointed by NYRA, while 11 will be reserved for state appointees. New York's governor will be able to appoint three directors, and, in addition, will appoint one director each on the recommendation of horsemen, breeders, state OTB corporations, and unions. The speaker of the assembly will appoint two directors, and the senate majority leader will appoint two directors.

The composition of the board had become a significant sticking point in the negotiations over the final two weeks.

Ruthless Capello casts Beckham aside

, , , ...

TV online : England - Premier League

David Beckham is facing up to the reality that his England career may have been curtailed one short of a century of caps after the former captain was omitted from Fabio Capello's first squad on the ground that he lacks match fitness.
Capello, whose 30-man provisional squad for next Wednesday's friendly against Switzerland at Wembley included Aston Villa's uncapped Gabriel Agbonlahor and Curtis Davies and ignored senior players such as Paul Robinson and Sol Campbell, was at pains to stress that the LA Galaxy midfielder would be considered again "once he is playing regularly in America". But, although Beckham is said to be "very hopeful" that he will be offered another chance, the 32-year-old is likely to have to wait until England's summer friendlies for a decision.

Galaxy visit Colorado Rapids on the opening day of the Major League Soccer season on March 29, some three days after England play France in Paris, which suggests Beckham will not be in consideration for that game either. That leaves him anxiously hoping to feature in the side selected for two summer internationals, one against Trinidad and Tobago and the other under negotiation, and by then the likes of Shaun Wright-Phillips, David Bentley and Aaron Lennon may have staked their claim in his absence.
Beckham was informed of Capello's decision in a call on Wednesday night but, although his intense disappointment drew parallels with his reaction when dropped from Steve McClaren's first selection, the comparison ends there. Where the previous manager was seeking to distance himself from his predecessor Sven-Goran Eriksson's reign, the Italian has taken a more pragmatic approach and is apparently only interested in players fit and featuring regularly in the first team at club level. "David remains very hopeful," said a source close to the player. "This was definitely not a McClaren moment."

"I know there has been a lot of discussion about David Beckham," said Capello, aware that the former captain had been training with Arsenal in recent weeks. "The reason that David is not in the squad is because he has not had any real match practice since playing in November. When I spoke with David on the phone I advised him that he is still part of my plans and, once he is playing regularly in America, we will look closely at him again."

Capello's eagerly anticipated first squad was notable as much for its absentees as for those included. Robinson, the previous regime's No1 until the fateful qualifying tie with Croatia in November, has since lost his place in the Tottenham Hotspur line-up and, until his club career has revived, it is hard to see him adding to his 41 caps. Jermain Defoe, a bit-part player at Spurs, has also been ignored, Capello having warned the striker that he must be featuring regularly at club level before he could be considered. Campbell, recalled surprisingly for the Croatia fiasco, may have played his last game for England after 73 appearances.

Phil Neville, a stalwart utility player since 1996, is also omitted and the West Ham United goalkeeper Robert Green can consider himself unfortunate to be overlooked, with David James retained and Chris Kirkland recalled.

Davies is a surprise, the defender still technically on loan from West Bromwich Albion and with only eight Premier League appearances to his name this season, though it remains to be seen whether he will make the cut when the squad is reduced to 23 names tomorrow evening. Agbonlahor is less of a surprise given his energetic form for Villa this term, with Capello having left out other youngsters, including Lennon, to allow them to feature in the Under-21s' competitive qualifier against Ireland at Southampton's St Mary's stadium.

"We will use the time between now and our first World Cup qualifying match in September to look at the players and find the best formula for the England team," added Capello. "I will also look at players who have not been included in the squad this time. I have also worked very closely with Stuart Pearce on squad selection and there are some players like Joe Hart, Aaron Lennon, Theo Walcott and David Wheater who are with the Under-21s this time because they have a very important qualification game against Ireland on Tuesday. In the future these are players that could feature in the senior squad."

Other senior players will be fretting until tomorrow evening to discover whether they will still be involved when the squad meets up on Monday. Injuries sustained over the weekend may prove decisive, though Capello has selected 12 defenders, with Spurs' Ledley King unlikely to be retained if he features against Manchester United tomorrow, given his current struggles to play two games in quick succession. The likes of Matthew Upson, selected for the first time since November 2004, Nicky Shorey and Davies may also make way, with one of the five strikers - that number includes Michael Owen despite his recent toils at Newcastle - also likely to drop out.

Sunderland beats Portsmouth 2-0 in English Premier League action

, , , ...

LONDON - Kieran Richardson scored twice Sunday as Sunderland beat Portsmouth 2-0 to improve its chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League.

Richardson scored in the 33rd and 43rd minutes at the Stadium of Light and also hit the crossbar from 25 metres in the second half against a team which had won seven of its previous eight league and cup games on the road.

Jason Roberts scored a 90th-minute goal as Blackburn rallied for a 2-1 win at Bolton.

Portsmouth's loss came the day after manager Harry Redknapp turned down a chance to move to Newcastle. The Magpies parted with Sam Allardyce on Wednesday and targeted the veteran Pompey manager as a replacement, but Redknapp said he preferred to stay with the south coast club, which slipped to ninth in the standings.

"It was a great opportunity for me to go and manage one of the great football clubs," Redknapp said of the Newcastle offer. "I understand all that.

"Some people will say I made the right move and some people will say I should have taken it. If I didn't like (Portsmouth), if I didn't like the owner or if I didn't like the players I'd have been up there like a shot, but there was no need for me to change."

The three points didn't lift Sunderland, now with 20 points, out of the relegation zone. Fulham is 19th with 15 points and Derby last with seven.

Richardson's first goal came after a determined run by Kenwyne Jones down the left. The tall striker chased the ball with Sol Campbell, who stopped running expecting the referee to award a free kick against the Sunderland forward. Jones pulled the ball into the middle where Richardson slid it inside the far post.

The second came two minutes before halftime when the England midfielder burst past Hermann Hreidarsson in a diagonal run into the area and scored with a right-footed shot.

Seconds after Benjani Mwaruwari squandered a close range chance for Portsmouth, Richardson hit the bar with a long-range shot.

"We brought Kieran to the club for what you saw today," said Sunderland manager Roy Keane, who used to play alongside Richardson at Manchester United. "He's one of the fastest players at the team and when you have a midfielder with pace who can get you a goal it's a massive plus. Kieran gives us something special."

Kevin Nolan put Bolton ahead at the Reebok Stadium. After Blackburn goalkeeper Brad Friedel had punched away a cross, Kevin O'Brien lobbed the ball over a crowded area to the unmarked Nolan, who was facing away from goal when he sent a first-time angled volley inside the far post.

Christopher Samba headed in Blackburn's 53rd-minute goal to tie it after Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen failed to reach a corner and Roberts scored the winning goal when he collected a flick on by Roque Santa Cruz and scored with a deflected shot.

The victory lifted Blackburn above Portsmouth into eight place while Bolton, which sold striker Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea on Friday, remains in relegation trouble in 15th, level on points with Sunderland, Wigan and Birmingham.

Manchester United moved into first place on goal difference by outplaying Newcastle 6-0 on Saturday, hours after the Magpies heard that Redknapp would not be taking over as manager.

Arsenal slipped to second after surprisingly being held to a 1-1 draw at home by 16th-place Birmingham, and Chelsea made up ground on the Gunners with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham.

United and Arsenal have 51 points and Chelsea has 47. Liverpool slipped further off the pace after a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough and is now 12 points behind the leaders with a game in hand.

Also on Saturday, it was: Aston Villa 3, Reading 1; Derby 0, Wigan 1; Everton 1, Manchester City 0; and West Ham 2, Fulham 1.
