DUBAI - UAE champions Al Wasl know they will have to be at their best when they take on Iraq's Al Quwa Al Jawiya in their opening match in this year's AFC Champions League at Al Wasl stadium on Wednesday.

The seven-time UAE champions and last year's double winners have lost their way in the league this season as they lie eighth in the standings with only five wins from 14 matches.

However, the team still have the chance to represent the UAE again in the AFC Champions League after they qualified for the final of the President's Cup, but for now they turn their attention to Wednesday's clash.

Al Wasl coach Ze Mario has stressed that his side should be wary of the threat their opponents pose, especially because they know little about the five-time Iraq league champions.

"We are looking for a good start to go top of the group," said the Brazilian, who previously coach Saudi Arabia's Al Shabab in the AFC Champions League.

"We have to win all our home matches including the game against Al Quwa Al Jawiya," he added.

"We have prepared well with our league match against Al Ain but AFC Champions League matches are totally different from the local games.

"We don't know much about Al Quwa Al Jawiya but the most important thing is not to underestimate them," concluded the 59-year-old.

Al Quwa Al Jawiya arrived early in the UAE and have played two preparatory matches against local teams in Al Sharjah.

Coach Hamid Salman will be relying on the attacking duo of Akram Hashim and Yasir Abdul Muhsen, who both scored 17 goals between them in Iraq league.

Abdul Muhsen suffered a slight knock but is expected to feature in the match and Salman is confident that all his players will be ready.

"It was good to prepare early for the match in a preparatory camp," said

Salman. "This gave us the chance to prepare the players physically as well as mentally for the AFC Champions League, especially as the game will be against Al Wasl.

"Al Wasl are one of the top teams in the UAE and they are also the league champions. They have several talented players and important foreign players as well.

"Our task is difficult but at the same time it is not going to be impossible. Our team have a good combination of talented players who are capable of a good result against Al Wasl."

CHANGCHUN - China international Du Zhenyu expressed his confidence ahead of Changchun Yatai's AFC Champions League debut against Vietnamese league champions Binh Duong on Wednesday

"We have to work very hard but frankly, Binh Duong shouldn't pose any bit threat to us," said the China Super League player of the year 2007.

The AFC Champions League go into their tournament boosted after claiming their first-ever Chinese Super League title.

Changchun edged runners-up Beijing Guoan by a single point to win the CSL and now the team from north-eastern China are looking to make their mark in the continent's premier club tournament.

But after being placed in a tricky Group E that also includes Korean league champions Pohang Steelers and Australian side Adelaide United, the Chinese side are aware that they must get maximum points from their opening home game against what appears to be the weakest team in the group.

Speaking ahead of the afternoon clash at the Changchun City Stadium, Changchun manager Gao Hongbo described Binh Duong as an unknown quantity but still expects his side to win handily.

"I know they have six national players but we have never played clashed against them before," said Gao, who sees Adelaide as the strongest side in the group.

"However, if we can utilize the right tactics in this game, the victory will be ours."

The Changchun players are even more confident of picking up all three points.

"Vietnamese teams are not difficult to play against so we should be able to win the game," said China international midfielder Wang Dong.

Changchun's main concerns appear to be their own preparations for the match.

The team have not been played competitively since the final round of the CSL, while the new season is not due to start until March 29.

And with the country's focus on the national team ahead of this month's crucial World Cup qualifier against Australia, Changchun have spent only four days training with internationals Wang, Du and goalkeeper Zong Lei in the build-up to the Binh Duong clash.

"All three players are important members of the Changchun Yatai team. Wang is also a key player in our midfield so he has an essential role to play," said Gao.

Changchun have only one injury concern with reserve goalkeeper An Qi recovering from an ankle injury.

Binh Duong enter the match low on confidence after a poor start to their domestic campaign which has seen the defending champions win only two of nine matches to lie second from last in the 14-team top flight.

Their woes were compounded by a 3-0 defeat to Dong Tam Long An in their most recent V-League match last Friday.

Coach Le Thuy Hai expects little from the game other than a good performance by his players.

"It's not important whether we will win or lose," he said. "We just hope to put on our best performance and give our best effort in the game."
