How to install Skype

Skype is a software used to make phone or video calls over the internet, either to other computing devices, or to actual phones. It’s proprietary software but free of charge. To install it under Ubuntu, the best thing is to add the Skype repository, so that you can then install it via Synaptic.
To add the Skype repository, click System > Administration > Software Sources and then ensure the Third-Party Software tab is selected. Click the Add button

in the APT Line text field, type the following:
Click the Add Source button, then the Close button, and agree to reloading the list of packages when prompted.

next open Synaptic by going to Systen > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager and use it to search for and install the "skype" package. Once installed, you’ll find the program under the Internet menu.

the first time you launch Skype you should see the license agreement

next it will ask you for you login information if don't have an account you will have to make one:

if you have an account just log in, if you don't after you create one you will see the following

next click on make a test call to make sure you have sound, if you don't have sound on the top right bar click on the volume control and click on File > Change device. Make sure the Alsa mixer is selected.

if you don't have "alsa mixer" installed type this in a terminal:
next still under "volume control" go to Edit > Preferences and check microphone, mic boost, internal mic boost or whatever applicable to your needs thats it.

I haven use Skype much, I use "rebtel" only because you don't need to install any software but I've heard some good things about Skype.
note: If you run into problems with Skype’s audio output, use Synaptic to install the "nas" package. Then restart the computer.

I followed your instructions and received the following error:
Could not dowload all repository indexes. The repository may no longer be available or could not be contracted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address is the preferences is correct.
My internet connection is working just fine. What is the resolve to this?

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/hardy.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
then the key:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update
after that go to synaptic and search for skype and see what happens

When I type in the key, I get the message: E: Malformed l 54 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)
I'm assuming the symbols you're using above are ampersands as they look different when I type them in?

Hi nerd,
Adding the Skype Debian repository gets me a different version of skype than when downloading the Ubuntu package from the Skype website (2.0.0.72-1 as opposed to ubuntu-hardy_2.1.0.47-1_386). However, there is the Medibuntu repository, it provides skype-2.1.0.47-0medibuntu2. Works fine.

It worked but gave the old Skype Beta version 2.0.0.72-1 !!!
I don't want that version. I want the newest Skype version for Linux.
People say use synaptic to get latest version, what a bunch of bull as I just found out.
