JCXP says: Down with Opera!

, , , ...

Well, I had (still have) mixed emotions about Opera Software taking the browser diversity cause to the court.

It isn't hard to predict what happens next -- see: Newton's Third Law of Motion ("For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction".

Greasing the Net with a monkeys fat

Ever wondered if there's some way to change hideous design, repair broken links, remove stupid animations and change the not quite perfect contents of other peoples' pages? Already tried Greasemonkey?

What you will need is:
  • your Firefox browser
  • the addon itself
  • at least basic JavaScript and DOM knowledge (you want to know what you're doing, don't you?)
  • time (a weekend perhaps?)

Additionally you may want to take a look at
  • the main script repository at userscripts.org.
  • Platypus -- a handy extension allowing you to slap together you first GM scripts.

If you're not that ecstatic about the FF:
  • Users of IE could give Trixie a try.
  • Opera aficionados should just check the browsers settings for UserJS (yes, Virginia, Opera already had it!)
  • And, LBNL there's a way to use your GM scripts with the (notoriously overhyped) Chrome browser (read here and here)

Have fun!

SonyEricsson Xperia X1

, , , ...

After years of intensive usage my HTCs battery started to show first signs of decay.
Because the same thing happened to my 2 year T-Mobile contract I took the opportunity and since April,1st 2009 I'm a proud, but still somehow insecure owner of the SonyEricssons X1 (codename: Xperia)

Let's brag a bit ;-) :
  • the display is absolutely brilliant: resolution 480x800, bright and easy to work with (either with fingers or a stylus)
  • GPS inside - works perfectly with Google Maps and T-Mobile's Navigate
  • 3.2MP camera (still waiting to be tested ;-) )
  • relatively full QWERTY keyboard (phones bought in Germany have the hideous QWERTZ "Krautboard" instead)
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 (and I really hope the toy is WM6.5 compatible)
  • 256MB RAM
  • 500MHz ARM (Qualcomm) CPU
  • 16GB microSD card (optional)
  • pre-installed Opera Mobile (yes!)
  • HSDPA
  • wireless LAN
  • Bluetooth 2.0

So far I tested:
  • GPS navigation with Navigate and Google Maps - fast, accurate, perfect
  • browsing (Opera rocks on PDAs, sucks on desktops, IE sucks everywhere and I'll wait till Mozillas Fennec reaches 0.5 ;-) )
  • e-mail with Outlook (my hosted Exchange and POP3/IMAP accounts)
  • wardriving with WiFiFoFum
  • games :D
  • programming in Tcl [Evolane TCL]

And now - what I definitely don't like:
  • Xperia has no really programmable keys. My HTC has at least 3. Not much of a problem on usual occasions, but real PITA when taking screenshots. I found a real neat snapshot-maker, but on the X1 I'm only able to use it with timer -- there's no key I could use for the trigger!
