Fixing Proxy problems
By Navjot Paweranavjotpawera. Tuesday, July 14, 2009 9:48:45 AM
This has been largely due to our Unite proxy acting funny. One of the main purposes of the Opera Unite Alpha launch was to test our systems in the real world and make sure we go out with a stable system if this is to become a regular browser feature. Sure enough, there are things to fix and bugs to iron out based on all the feedback you guys have been sending in. So hang on, we're working to fix this ASAP
Also, we've seen some new services being uploaded to http://unite.opera.com/services/. Do check them out.
TIP: You can get the latest uploaded services at http://unite.opera.com/services/new/
Btw, to those who are heading out for summer vacations, Have Fun

It would be nice to have some sort of Opera Unite Proxy status page so we can easily tell if the problem is on our end or on the opera proxy end.
I Spent quite awhile trying to figure out if I had done something wrong and such a status page would have saved me from wasting my time.
Good job though, just wish I could show it off to my friends.

Oh well, I guess it's a matter of time you guys can find the best way to get things working again

"Opera Unite error: The Opera Unite proxy server is currently not reachable. The network may be down."
P.S.: I use HTTP\HTTPS SquidNT Proxy with NTLM authorization.

Version 10.53, Build 3374, System: Windows XP.
Does UNITE produce a log file to see what's the problem?

Currently running Windows 7 (I don't remember whether I had the same problem with WinXP before) and I'm using an "older" router. Some of these problems are linked to the change of Microsoft's network stack, introduced with Vista (still the same in Win7).
Maybe go through these steps to check for sources of potential interference. And maybe consider creating a 'system restore point' before you try these out; this way you can be lazy and should be able to easily revert the subsequent steps.
1. _TEMPORARILY_ disable _ALL_ firewalls/security software and see if it makes a difference. If so, create a firewall rule for Opera to have the required privileges for in- and outbound traffic.
2. Maybe your Windows event log found via the system control panel provides some additional information. If so, Google the "Event ID" and "Source". Time&date will help you spot the relevant ones.
3. Try some other DNS server like Google's 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 or some OpenDNS ones. Either change this in your router for all attached clients or just on the affected machine.
4. If it's not a laptop, but even if it is, this may be worth a try: go to your device manager and disable the power saving for your network adapter on it's properties.

5. Additionally you can try the steps mentioned on the following link, that will kind of reverse it to the former network stack:

Fingers crossed. Yes, a real bummer - such a nice feature causing so many headaches, but Opera can hardly be blamed for it.
