Opera Unite

Help us load test our proxy servers with Sonar

, ,

With all the testing that has been going on in the last few weeks, it seems our proxy servers have been behaving well. We figured that is probably not enough though. We want to put the proxy servers through some more stress. This is all to make way for Opera 10.10, which will have Opera Unite as a regular feature of the desktop browser.

To do this, we have created a new service, "Sonar". This service will help us load test our proxy servers even better. All this service does, is sit quietly on your computer. When we run a test, data is requested from around the world. We request a small amount of data from each instance of this service, to help us observe our proxy's behaviour.

Now, once again, to be able to test this on a large scale, from every corner of the world, we need your help. All you need to do is download Sonar and keep it running on your Opera Unite builds.

Of course, you can stop the service at any time to opt out of the testing. Once again, thanks for all the help. You guys are great ! bigsmile

The "Please keep this service running" link on the service's page is to the old http://unite.opera.com/service/402/1.0/ page.

Done

If this is a success will you launch 10.1 right away or will you make more services?

icare Saturday, September 12, 2009 8:14:08 PM

I hope they'll launch 10.1 right away. I can wait for a few more services (we have the most important already : file sharing, file uploader, media player, etc...), but I can't wait for Unite.

When will the stress test be over?

Installed and running.

@dantesoft: Thanks for catching that! I've corrected the link, though an update is not required for a successful test.

@all: The test will be done in bursts of possibly 30 minutes. It will be monitored live, and done very carefully so as to not end up DDOS'ing your computers - but only our proxies.

We're waiting for enough instances of this service before we can start.

I extracted the zip to a folder and opened the index.html page... all I get is a blank page. Is this it? Am I running?

Galileo Tuesday, September 15, 2009 9:55:35 AM

You don't need to do that..just go to the page of the service and click install service.
