Opera Unite

Ended support for Opera Unite and Opera Widgets

, ,

With Opera 12 released earlier this year, Opera Unite and Opera Widgets was turned off by default for new users. The two Add-on platforms will be completely removed in a later release expected before the end of this year.

We would like to thank everyone who has been involved in testing, using and developing cool applications for Opera Widgets and Opera Unite. You can continue supporting our new add-ons platform with support for extensions, themes and more!

Take a bow hanomu!

Stup^H^Hrange decision, trading innovation like Unite for eye-candy such as "Themes".

Goodbye and good riddance.

I'd love to see the extensions API make these possible as extensions though to appease those who wanted Unite and Widgets.

It's wise to unify different plateforms instead of running them alongside.

But is it wise to suppress Unite and Widget when we can't recreate them in add-ons ?
You should wait until the add-ons API are complete.

And by the way, will you provide a tool to convert automatically widgets to add-ons ?

Good bye (for *now*, I hope), Unite.

Опера! Вы потеряли разработчика в моём лице. В API Opera.

Opera! Have you lost a developer in my face. In the API Opera.Extentions is not possible to develop a multiplayer web-based applications that I wanted to write it as a Unite-applications. (There is a huge pile of ideas) I am going to write extensions for Firefox - where the API is what need for. And the first thing I want create something like Opera Unite. I hope you do not mind?

It's a shame. There ere some pretty neat things that you could do with the Webserver and FIle I/O APIs that are not available now. I hope that the new W3C version of File System API (4 years since we proposed the Unite one as a starting point) and the webserver API get implemented for extensions soon.

Being able to have a transparent widget also enabled some very cool use cases.

For the rest, I can live with having to run things as an app in the browser, given that I can still package extensions with the simplicity of widgets or just unzip a widget and run it in e.g. a panel or a window (depending on what I want for persistence).

But it is a shame that in the meanwhile Opera offers neither one, nor the other. Widgets and Unite made for good reasons to develop on Opera. Integrating a payment solution that works across mobiles and desktops with Opera's cross-platform potential would have made a seriously interesting platform. Hopefully this is a temporary dip in what we can expect as developers...
