Opera Unite services get rechristened to applications

,

Along with fixing up and prepping Opera Unite to get ready for the next release, we put in time for usability testing and trying to make things simpler. As a result, we are going to make some changes, but we will try to make them gradual and get them out in phases.

One important change that we made public this week was that we will now refer to our services as Opera Unite applications. If you download the latest snapshot from the links in the sidebar, you can check out the first snapshot with this revision. We will update the websites and the service application repository as the snapshots become more stable.

What does this mean for developers? Use the .ua extenstion on your applications and serve it with the MIME type application/x-opera-uniteapplication. We will keep you updated on any relevant information.

What do you think? Does this make more sense to you as an Opera Unite user? Will it make it easier for your friend who visits your Media Player application? Let us know smile

ps - make sure you keep those Sonars running wink

Updates: Just in time for Friday beer !

, , ,

We have a new snapshot build of the desktop browser out today over at the Desktop Blog and with it, we have some new updates to Unite as well:
  1. We're testing out some updates to our Unite proxy. We expect fewer people to lose connections and more consistent communication. Again, we need all the feedback on this we can get.
  2. No more "unite://" - To make it easier to share links to your stuff, we have let go off the "unite://" URLs. Now every administrative URL looks like -
    http://admin.<device name>.<user name>.operaunite.com
When you share this link, your friends are automatically redirected to
    http://<device name>.<user name>.operaunite.com
[this is being fixed as we speak].
  3. Local network discovery - If there are others using Opera Unite on your local network, they are now shown when you click on the Unite button in the status bar (bottom left side).
  4. Per service visibily options: "Make service visible to search engines" "Make service visible on Opera Unite Web pages" "Make service visible inside your local network, using UPnP"
  5. Same settings as above available as Global settings
  6. A few UI changes
If you have been following the recent snapshot builds, you might have seen some of the UI changes already. Do let us know what you think and stay tuned for more updates wink

Update (Download links for convenience): WARNING: This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations. In fact, it may not work at all.

Opera 10 Beta 2 and Unite

, , ,

As mentioned in the by Manuela in the Desktop Blog and the My Opera blog, today we have two desktop releases:

  • Opera Beta 2: This version is intended for those running Beta 1 and does not contain Opera Unite.
  • Snapshot: Includes all the bug-fixes and improvements of Beta 2, plus Opera Unite.

Most of you installed the Opera Unite labs release a month ago. So don't worry, the auto-update will use the snapshot release and you won't notice any changes other than improvements.

If for some reason you installed beta 2 yourself and now don't have Opera Unite, just download the latest snapshot from the desktop blog and you will be up and running with Unite again.

What's the plan?

Nav already mentioned in the post below that the team is hard at work ironing out the proxy issues. While some client-side fixes are included in this release, we want to be confident with the stability and scalability of the infrastructure before we incorporate Unite into the desktop pre-releases. But we're sure it won't be long wink

As always, let us know what you think.
