After a very long train journey last night (as nice as the ICE trains are, spending almost 6 hours in one gets a bit boring, believe me) we finally had a chance for a bit of a lie-in this morning.

Ich bin ein Berliner (I'm a donut) - German Uni Tour - Berlin 3-4 November 2009

We're two days into the German University Tour, which sees us zig-zagging across Deutschland to cover 9 universities in 8 different cities over the course of two weeks. As my colleague Alexandra and I are now packing up for our second destination, it seems an appropriate time to say goodbye to Berlin and to give a quick recap of the tour so far.

Universitytour: Opera Software goes to Germany

, , , ...

After a long round of preparation we are ready to go to Germany. This would be the second unitour to Germany. We are going to visit 8 cities, 9 universities, attend 2 events and organize two community meet-ups. The speaker this time will be Patrick Lauke. Patrick works as Web Evangelist in the Developer Relations team. In a previous life, he was Web Editor for the University of Salford, where he headed a small central web team. In 2003 he implemented one of the first web standards based XHTML/CSS driven UK university sites.
If you are around these cities and would like to learn more about webstandards, mobile internet, cross device web technologies and get a nice Opera T-Shirt or would like just join us for a free beer at the community meet-up we would be very pleased
Here is our program:

University Tours are Back!

We are excited to announce that our university tours program will soon resume for this semester!

From late October to early December we will be conducting seminars in universities in South Africa, China, Indonesia, Ukraine, Russia, Germany and Poland. These seminars explore the history and future
of the Web, mobile browsing and of course go into detail on Web standards and opening the Web. Students will be able to gain new perspectives on IT trends, ask questions to developers and product managers from Opera Software in a panel discussion, and network directly with people in the IT industry.

The time and venue details for the first of our seminars are now available, and stay tuned to that page as more universities are confirmed!

IOE - Pulchowk Campus, Nepal

, , ,

Earlier in the month I went to IOE - Pulchowk Campus in Kathmandu, Nepal. This was my first trip to Nepal and was quite looking forward to it, and I wasn't disappointed!

The day started out with a Demo Day organized by Opera Campus Crew memberSandip. Quite a crowd had gathered to learn about Opera. It was fun to talk about Opera 10 beta there, especially the visual tabs, password manager and Opera Turbo features

After the Demo Day, we had the main seminar in the afternoon, which was attended by almost 150 people. I mostly spoke about emerging Web standards together with demos, and the mobile Web and how its affecting us. I liked the enthusiasm of the crowd, and questions asked during and after my talk. After the talk, we had a small slogan contest for Opera Turbo and Opera Unite. There were quite a few that were good, but 'Compressing difficulty, expanding simplicity' was my favorite slogan of the bunch!

Later in the evening, we went for a community meet-up, and had a great time there as well! During the meetup, I got to talk to students on a lot of other stuff as well. I was surprised to find out that Nepal's weekend consists of only one day! I also found out that the local beer (Everest) is actually pretty good , and the local food was great as well. Besides that, I think the students there were some of the nicest I've met in all the universities I've visited.

I would like to thank Sandip for all the hard work in organizing the day, and the students in IOE for their great enthusiasm. From what I saw, Nepal is a beautiful country with nice weather, exotic architecture, but above all really great people. I really look forward to visiting Nepal once again.
