Opera in Mexico

,

Our last tour took us to beautiful Mexico - for the first time! We have been to Brazil before, but this was our first time visiting a Spanish-speaking country in Latin America! The tour was conducted by speaker Charles "Chaals" McCathieNevile (Chief Standards Officer), Zoe Zermeno (Market Coordinator Latin America) and Anna Brandt (Education Manager).

During our tour we visited three universities: the Technological University of Monterrey, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), both in Mexico City.

Our adventure started in Monterrey, in northeastern Mexico, where we were invited to participate in the university's student-run IT symposium (which has been held every year since 1974!). Together with speakers from Twitter, Google, Mozilla, Nokia and others, we experienced 3 packed days full of discussions, presentations, workshops, and tons of amazing Mexican food!

Then we traveled on to the big capital, Mexico City. At both UNAM and IPN, Chaals gave a presentation on the future of the Web and held workshops on how to create widgets, web-based applications. The level of interest and curiosity by the students was impressive. The last two workshops were so full that we did not even have room for everybody who wanted to participate! One participant impressed us even more by creating a widget basically on the spot!

In Mexico City we also met up with a few Campus Crew members from the Technological Institute of Aguascalientes, who made a trip of five hours just to participate in the events in Mexico City!

We met up with Opera fans on three different occasions, sharing conversation, drinks and Mexican tapas. It's always great for us to meet our users, answer their questions and hear about how they use Opera technologies in their daily lives. One of our most active community members surprised us by holding an excellent presentation on Opera Dragonfly and its practical use for designers.

Overall, it was an amazing trip and we cannot wait to return to Mexico. Thank you to the universities who took such excellent care of us and made sure that our experience was a fantastic one!

Gracias y hasta luego!

Ukraine - Kyiv and Donetsk

I'm back from a Ukrainian 'mini-tour', after an unexpected day in Munich. A good chat in Kyiv with Opera community, a good conference in Donetsk and many more highlights to outweigh the low point (dealing with Kyiv Police)...

Opera University Talk

So, for all those of you who have not yet had the chance to attend one of our talks, here it goes! Our partner in Poland, Webhosting.pl, filmed the speech that our Chief Standards Officer Charles McCathieNevile gave at the University of Technology in Poznań. The topic was "Bleeding Edge Web Technologies".

an afternoon in Bina Nusantara

, , , ...

Bina Nusantara University or better known as BINUS is located in the heart of Jakarta. We arrived in the afternoon after finishing our visit at Budi Luhur university. The weather god was good enough to only start pouring after Anissa Putri and I arrived.

My session lasted for about 75 minutes, speaking about a range of things. Firstly about HTML5 and it's origin then CSS3. Thirdly I talked about some design philosophy on mobile and finally some of the challenges Web Standards face globally.

Here goes the slides.

Budi Luhur Round 2

, , ,

The jurney from Bandung to Jakarta was taken around 4 hours this time. It usually only takes half time of that, if it was not pouring rain and we didn't get stuck in the traffic because the President of the United State just arrived in town. But we enjoyed the trip. A part from that, we got a bad and good news. Good news, we have a day to take a breath from the hectic schedule. YAY! The bad one was that Rolf Assev, our Chief Strategy Officer, couldn't be able to enter Indonesia to attend some university seminars in Jakarta. All the International airlines were stop flying to Indonesia because of the Merapi eruption. But both of us managed to be the stars at the events. cool

Anyway, it's good to be back in Budi Luhur University in Jakarta. I saw some familiar faces, and many more new ones. As usual, it's fun to be in Budi Luhur because of the hospitality shown by the attendants - always a lively crowd.

We've also received many interesting questions from the floor. One particular question came from a lecturer which asked how HTML5 is going to give access to a computer's camera. This is very interesting particular at a time when DAP is taking shape in the Web Standards world. With DAP, we want to give developers access to a range of different things including the address book, the camera and such. For more information about DAP, read what Robin Berjon co-chair of DAP in W3C has to say.

Almost there...

We've travelled 1000 km, given 5 talks, been in 5 cities, and we've only been going a bit over 60 hours. This time tomorrow, after two talks in two cities, it will all be over. It seems like a whirlwind, but some things are memorable...

Road Trip through Poland - Days 1 and 2

Day 1: Wroclaw-Poznań

On Monday morning, Charles (Opera's Chief Standards Officer and our speaker for the tour), Slawek (Communication Manager) and I (Education Manager) met up in Wroclaw. The plan: to visit 6 universities in 5 different cities in the South of Poland, spreading the about Opera and web technologies. And I was delighted to suddenly find myself on a fantastic road trip, getting to know Poland and Opera users all over the country!

Our first stop was at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The weather was gloomy, but the room inside was filled and the students ready to go. After the presentation, we quickly made our way across town through Poznań traffic in order to make it in time for our lecture at the Poznań University of Technology. If at this point you are curious about what it actually is that Charles talks about during his presentations, you will have a chance to watch the whole lecture at webhosting.pl. We will let you know once it has been posted on their website!
