Opera Software University Tours

Coming to a university near you!

University Tours Blog

Welcome to the blog for Opera Software’s university tours. This is the place to read updates from the people on tour.

As part of the Opera Education program, aiming to work closely with schools and universities to enhance learning about the Web, Opera is touring Universities around the World. The list of countries we have visited so far includes South Africa, France, China, United Kingdom, United States, India, Indonesia, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Japan, Brazil, and Poland - Check out the full schedule for details on when and where we are going.

The university seminars in the tours are an opportunity for students and staff to learn more about Web standards and the history and future of the Web.

Opera staff, often including senior management and engineers (Chief 'something' Officers, and experts from our engineering groups), give presentations and take questions for between one and three hours (depends on the university). The presentations cover current work in standards, some interesting technologies that are under development, the mobile and general web and something about Opera as a company and what we do.

In many cities we also organise meet-ups with Opera users, and students attending the presentations are welcome to attend those too.

Hmmm. The places you stop at only cover small parts of the countries you're visiting... in the US it's just California (yes I know you have a branch in San Diego, thank you) and in Germany it's Berlin, Munich and Hamburg. I'm not too familiar with the UK but my guess is that all the stops there are on or near the east coast. So while this initiative might be a step in the right direction, and might just bear fruit, your target group is still very narrow.

Take this as a suggestion for future events: Cover more ground. Broaden your scope. Make more people able to attend.

Thanks for your input. It is indeed shame that we are not able to visit every university or city in each country. We would certainly love to do so! We don't have an unlimited budget for travel, and also the speakers on these tours are often Chief Officers or managers (we send the best!) who aren't able to be out of the office for long periods. The short timeframes for the tours mean we have to work with certain geographical constraints.

This is our first year of running a university tour program, and we will be visiting a whopping 13 countries this time. Next year who knows where we'll be!

Actually, it's for that reason that we have now launched the Opera Campus Crew - our student representatives program - so that we can try to expand our reach by having an Opera rep on as many campuses as possible. Check out http://www.opera.com/education/campuscrew/ for more information.

The campus crew sounds like a nice idea  I'll bookmark it for my peruse later on.

Also, good to know some of the more prominent members of the company will be visiting in. I guess there is not much wiggle room then. It's still a pity, though. Anyways, thanks for the info, and my thumbs up for the program.

Brasil?

That could be greate...

@dooman, sorry we didn't make Rostov-on-Don on this tour. We're thinking about ways to get to South Russia more (I am also thinking about ways to tour Central Asia as well as South America...)

I have to say that it is hard work doing a tour, even if it is only a week. Especially in a big country like Russia, where there is a lot of travel time involved (and I have to get a visa...). I hope that we do cover lots of the world, but we can't be everywhere at once - and people like me also havea day job that we have to get done ...

So, sorry for this time. I hope we can get there next time. But I know we cannot go everywhere all at once - because I have tried and it hurts

Thank you for answer. I understand you. We will wait you at next time
