Coming to a university near you!

Ich bin ein Berliner (I'm a donut) - German Uni Tour - Berlin 3-4 November 2009

, , , , , ,

We're two days into the German University Tour, which sees us zig-zagging across Deutschland to cover 9 universities in 8 different cities over the course of two weeks. As my colleague Alexandra and I are now packing up for our second destination, it seems an appropriate time to say goodbye to Berlin and to give a quick recap of the tour so far.

On Tuesday, we kicked off proceedings with an interview for TelTarif.de, to coincide with the release of Opera Mobile 10 Beta for Symbian Smartphones. After that, I had the pleasure of evangelising to students at the Freie Universität Berlin about the value of Web standards, the exciting new features of HTML5, CSS3, SVG, and the increasing importance of mobile Web design, widgets and of course our very own Opera Unite (speaking of which, make sure to check out our Opera Unite challenge for a chance to win one of our weekly prizes).

Today, after another interview in the morning - this time with the chaps from AreaMobile - I once again made my way over to the FU Berlin for Droidcon, the first German Android developer conference, where I gave a quick overview of Opera's One Web philosophy and how new technologies like CSS3 Media Queries can be leveraged to create websites that work on, and adapt to, all sorts of devices - from lower-end fashion phones to connected televisions and desktop computers.

To finish off our stay in Berlin, our last appointment for the day took us to the Design Akademie Berlin for a smaller, more intimate session with students from the communication design course. As my own educational background straddles both computer sciences and graphic design, it was interesting to see the very different take these students had on the new creative possibilities offered by new and emerging developments such as HTML5's native <video> element and the power of webfonts.

Right, now it's time to pack our bags and have an early night...we've got a 6 o'clock train to catch to take us to Furtwangen University ... stay tuned!
