After almost two weeks on the road, the end is nearly in sight. We arrived at the Technical University Dortmund for the last scheduled talk of the tour. And, for once, this was a university where we already had an active Campus Crew present, which really made this also the best stop of the tour.

After a very long train journey last night (as nice as the ICE trains are, spending almost 6 hours in one gets a bit boring, believe me) we finally had a chance for a bit of a lie-in this morning.

We're two days into the German University Tour, which sees us zig-zagging across Deutschland to cover 9 universities in 8 different cities over the course of two weeks. As my colleague Alexandra and I are now packing up for our second destination, it seems an appropriate time to say goodbye to Berlin and to give a quick recap of the tour so far.

University tour day 1: meeting students from Berlin and Paderborn

, , , ...

Opera goes to Germany to visit 10 universities in 7 cities. On Tuesday Håkon and I (Bernd) started with Freie Universität Berlin and Universität Paderborn.
We enjoyed meeting students from these two universities. During the seminar in Berlin students asked questions regarding the differences between open source versus open standards, semantic Web, printable HTML and more. Furthermore we handed out our funky Opera notepads for the first time, and they were very popular! (Check them out in the picture, right.)

In Paderborn we held a colloquium for faculty staff and students. With more than 100 attendees coming along to the event, we had to move the whole crowd to a bigger room. After the talk we took more than 30 minutes to discuss the numerous questions from both professors and students, which was very interesting! Afterwards, some students joined us for a meet-up where discussions could continue in an informal setting.

Highlights of the day (outside the seminars and meet-up, of course!) were finding a subway station called 'Osloer Straße' and a HTC commercial mentioning Opera Mobile 9.5. My quote of the day came from one of the feedback forms that we gave to the students at the seminars: "Thanks for the great presentation!"

We are looking forward to more discussions and interesting input from students and university staff, all across Germany .

German University Tour: Early thoughts and questions

, ,

Beginning with November 18 Opera will visit 10 universities in Germany (find a list of these universities here). We are going to hold seminars on the topics of web standards, browsers and the future of the web. We also want to give a voice to our audience. Therefore everybody is invited to ask questions or mention (sub-)topics in which they have a special interest. Our speakers will try to keep an eye on this blog and aim to answer these questions during the seminars where possible. Our speakers are Chief Technology Officer Håkon Wium Lie during the first week of the tour and Standards Expert Anne van Kesteren together with Product Manager Roberto Mateu during the second week. In order to allocate your questions, please mention the university where you are going to attend the seminar.
