an afternoon in Bina Nusantara

, , , ...

Bina Nusantara University or better known as BINUS is located in the heart of Jakarta. We arrived in the afternoon after finishing our visit at Budi Luhur university. The weather god was good enough to only start pouring after Anissa Putri and I arrived.

My session lasted for about 75 minutes, speaking about a range of things. Firstly about HTML5 and it's origin then CSS3. Thirdly I talked about some design philosophy on mobile and finally some of the challenges Web Standards face globally.

Here goes the slides.

Budi Luhur Round 2

, , ,

The jurney from Bandung to Jakarta was taken around 4 hours this time. It usually only takes half time of that, if it was not pouring rain and we didn't get stuck in the traffic because the President of the United State just arrived in town. But we enjoyed the trip. A part from that, we got a bad and good news. Good news, we have a day to take a breath from the hectic schedule. YAY! The bad one was that Rolf Assev, our Chief Strategy Officer, couldn't be able to enter Indonesia to attend some university seminars in Jakarta. All the International airlines were stop flying to Indonesia because of the Merapi eruption. But both of us managed to be the stars at the events. cool

Anyway, it's good to be back in Budi Luhur University in Jakarta. I saw some familiar faces, and many more new ones. As usual, it's fun to be in Budi Luhur because of the hospitality shown by the attendants - always a lively crowd.

We've also received many interesting questions from the floor. One particular question came from a lecturer which asked how HTML5 is going to give access to a computer's camera. This is very interesting particular at a time when DAP is taking shape in the Web Standards world. With DAP, we want to give developers access to a range of different things including the address book, the camera and such. For more information about DAP, read what Robin Berjon co-chair of DAP in W3C has to say.

First talks in Bandung

, , ,

On the 8th November 2010, we kicked of our uni tour in Indonesia from Bandung city. It's located in west Java. It was the third seminar we had in Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) since 2008. It was nice to be back to have a talk in Comlabs, a department who gives IT services in ITB, which always have active and very technical attendences. Most of attendences in this seminar was not only from ITB, but it was mixed of high schools, other campuses students and lecturers in Bandung.

We usually organized it on Saturday for ITB on the Free IT Saturday Lesson (fsl) event that held regularly every month. But this time, we had it on Monday and held 2 sessions seminar instead, so people could choose the schedule suits to their free time from classes and work.

Last university on the tour - Udayana University, Bali

The last but not least is Udayana University, Jimbaran - Bali.

Most of the participants started wearing Opera 'browse me' t-shirt when they got it.
We started the seminar abit late from the schedule, since we had to wait most of students who were having class. The vanue was fulled of students who are interested to get new knowledge and information in Web standards.

First Seminar in Indonesia Uni Tour

, , , ...

The Indonesia University tour this year was started on 16th November 2009 in Surabaya city. The weather in this city is around 34 degrees Celcius, pretty warm, but it was nice after having gray days in Oslo! smile

We arrived in Stikom Surabaya pretty early, 2 hours before, in case of the traffic jam happend. The lecturers guided us to walk around the university, and showed some awesome stuff that were made by some of the students there. Some of them is a dish washer

and a tool that can shake the Angklung instrument to play songs.

Bruce Lawson, Zibin Cheah and I were enjoying Indonesian food at the canteen, accompanied by the director of Stikom as well, before the seminar was started.

This seminar was attended more than 300 students. Most of them were IT students, although there were also around 10 students are majoring in secretary.

In the evening we also met with some students from Stikom and also from My Opera Community based in Surabaya. It was nice to meet and know all of them. smile

Back to Indonesia, this time in Binus

,

We couldn't get enough of nasi goreng and Indonesian hospitality. So we went back to Indonesia and visited Universitas Binus Nusantara, or better known as Binus.

Opera is invited as guest lecture and we got to sit down with 50 IT students to talk about "Mobile browsing and it's browser"

I am happy to be accompanied by three other Opera Campus Crew members: Mega, Yogi and Pak Risanto. They joined the campus crew program last year after we visited their universities. Mega kicked off the lecture by giving an introduction about Opera Campus Crew.

Students were curious to know about the one web philosophy. A student asked why his website works fine in one browser but not another. Apparently, web designers here are keen to make sure their sites are supported across different browsers.

Post-presentation, photos with friends.

After Binus, we moved on to Jakarta's Mobile Monday event. Ali and Ryan, both long time friends of Opera came to join us. We presented to the crowd about Mobile browsing trends and Opera.

The slides from the presentation in pdf is downloadable. The Open Web Standards demo can be viewed by firing up index.html in Opera browser and going into fullscreen mode. You will need Opera with Video Support to run some of the demos.

Indonesian Tour Wrap Up

A fruitful event in Indonesia! We would like to take the chance to thank all participants and friends that made this possible. Special thanks goes to Ali, Gayuh, Julio and Heni.

We learnt a great deal from Indonesia and we hope to be here again next year. We visited 11 universities, three meetups and talked to a couple of thousand people.

Also, sup buntut, igar bakar, pisang bakar and durian are soo delicious! I'll be back for more.

Terima kasih and sampai betemu lagi.

Jogjakarta: Universitas Gadjah Mada

, ,

Last but not least in Indonesia, we arrrived at Yogjakarta. This is a city with a blend of history and nature. Borobudur is an ancient pagoda lying in the heart of the jungle, which was built by several ancient kingdom in South East Asia. Lying some distance away from the city, we have the Merapi Volcano. This volcano is still very much alive and puffs smokes once in a while.

Gadjah Mada University students are a lively lot, and questions were thrown one after another toward us! My favourite question came from an insistent student who wants to learn more about encryption. The evening after the presentation, I was given a demonstration by Gajah Mada security experts in our meet-up in a local cafe.
