Calgarians For Kyoto

, ,

I saw a couple of Eco Club people at the Kyoto Rally this Sunday, for the rest of you who couldn't make it - here are a couple of pictures and a video to give you an idea of what it was like. There were a couple of hundred people there, and 4 or 5 anti-Kyoto knobs getting lots of media attention. It seems they were opposed to Kyoto because: (a) it would 'ruin' the economy; (b) it is a form of 'Enviro-Socialism' in that it allows for polluting countries to buy credits off of non-polluting countries, thereby essentially resulting in a transfer of money with no verifiable results on GHG total emissions - based on this reasoning perhaps they should have held up signs saying: no carbon credit transfers, but the rest is good! (c) the current warming is either a natural cycle or all the scientists are wrong and the earth is not warming as fast as everybody says it is. Sigh...

Alberta Environment Minister at the School Today

The Environmental Law Society has invited the EcoClub to join them on March 5th at 4:30 in the Moot Court, MFH 2370 (just go to the second floor of the law section in MFH, it's pretty easy to find) to chat with Rob Renner (the Alberta Environment Minister) about his first two months on the new job and to ask him some hard-hitting questions (which I know EcoClub members are so very good at!).

The Caribou Campaign Continues...

, ,

Right on everybody! Will, Sierra, Connie, Jake, and Elysse are superheroes!

The demonstration was reported on in the March 2nd edition of the Calgary Sun. Find the full article here: Eco Club demonstration makes the newspaper

So good work everybody, now we just have to convince Conoco and others that we in fact are not naive in thinking that deferrals would magically change 'the scenario', and that the whole point is that such actions on the part of individual operators would have a lot of power 'symbolically' to speed the process forward towards 'an integrated plan' - in addition the caribou would not be subject to e.g. Conoco's activity in the interim, an obvious plus for critically endangered animals. This does nothing to mention the moral, and perhaps, ethical imperative on the part of fully aware companies to do something along the lines of what we are requesting.

I'm drafting a letter to send to the ministers of Sustainable Resource Development; Energy; Environment; and Tourism, Parks, and Recreation today as well that I will send out for comments and support.

Tentative Media Release for Conoco and Caribou: the Sequel

, ,

I've sent out an email with the event info, but will repeat it here for good measure. The Eco Club has the back of the Little Smoky caribou herd, they're almost down and out so it's up to us to keep the heat on industry and government to do everything, emphasis on the everything, in their power to act in the best interests of the herd.

The event will be downtown (Gulf Canada Square, 401 9th Ave. SW - across 9th Ave. from the Bankers Hall West tower) at 3:30 pm on Thursday, March 1st (i.e. normal meeting time).

You can either meet downtown or meet up with Eco Club folks in the clubs office at 3:00, and then take the C-train down in that group. Or you come up to half an hour late downtown if that works best for you.

There should be sufficient background info in the media release attached below to get you up to speed.

Have a Heart for Alberta's Caribou!

,

Good Morning! All of you who can make it to the rally today are superheroes! [meet at 2:30 in the clubs office, or at 3:30 outside of Sun Life Energy building downtown - between center st. and 1st st. SW on 4th Ave. - goes till 4:30, 5:00 tops - bring mittens and toque although it is supposed to be warmer today  ]

Regardless, please send the following letter to Suncor Energy if you have the time and want to see Caribou stick around in Alberta.
Print out or attach the above card (by copying it off the blog and pasting it) and send with following letter (modify with own words if you want) to:

Mr. Richard George
President and CEO
Suncor Energy Ltd.
P.O. Box 38
Calgary, AB
T2P 2V5
FAX: 403 269-6271
Email: info@suncormail.com

Dear Mr. George:

As a signatory in 2003 to the Canadian Boreal Conservation Framework, your company said it would lead initiatives to maintain abundant and natural distributions of wildlife, agree to deferrals of industrial activity, and work to ensure the timely designation of parks and other such legislated protected areas.

Please put those words to work for the recovery of Alberta's threatened mountain and woodland caribou. I'm asking you to show leadership by(a) supporting immediate legislated protection for the habitat of the Little Smokey and A La Peche caribou herds in west-central Alberta, and (b) articulating support for legislated protected areas, moratoriums on new industry allocations and deferrals of industrial development within Alberta's caribou ranges to the Ministers of Sustainable Resource Development and Energy.
I look forward to your answer to Alberta's caribou's call to be their Valentine.

Yours truly,

Signature

That's a Rap...On The Climate Change Exhibit

,

Check out the picture or the attached movie if you would like to know what the last couple of days have looked like. Don't forget to bring yourself and as many friends as you can to 'An Inconvenient Truth' tomorrow, followed by a panel discussion. Movie starts at 7:00, ST 148.

Also, to those people that I talked to at the exhibit that are interested in joining the club, remember that we have very informal, friendly meetings every thursday (except for this thursday) at 3:30 in the clubs office. Don't worry about not being in the loop; there's a new loop every meeting!

GLOBAL WARMING WEEK STARTS TOMORROW!

,

Go to the website homepage (www.ucalgary.ca/ecoclub) for the schedule of events and activities. If you're at the school between 9:00 and 10:00ish and aren't doing anything in particular, your help at the clubs office would be greatly appreciated.

Environment trumps economy, poll suggests

,

A poll conducted by the Strategic Counsel suggests that climate change is resonating with Canadians now more than ever, with Canadians saying they support a wide range of strong measures to reduce our nation's total emissions.

Which of these measures would you support to reduce carbon emissions?

Raising fuel standards for vehicles and appliances; 86%

Consumers and industry switching to alternative fuels; 80%

Taxing industries based on carbon emissions; 79%

Banning coal fueled electrical generating facilities; 62%

Setting limits on fossil fuel consumption; 56%

Reducing development of Alberta's oil sands; 48%

Higher prices for gasoline and home heating fuel; 31%

Then again, only 26% of those surveyed said that the environment was their number one concern. Let's push it up! For the full Globe and Mail article go here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/climatechange

Addictive and Awesome Climate Challenge Game

,

Go here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/climate_challenge/ to play the game. You get to be the president of the European Nations, and set policies for 100 years to reduce total GHG emissions while keeping your people happy and the economy running. During my attempt, I apparently left the economy in ruins, with rampant unemployment across Europe. At the same time, my approval rating was in the high 70's. What does this mean? I say it means modern economies are for suckers, and everybody would be happier without them.

Make this Valentine's Day a good day for Alberta's Caribou

,

The Eco Club's Caribou rally will take place on Valentine's Day (a Wednesday) from 3:30 to ~5:00pm in Downtown Calgary [street level outside of Sun Life Energy Plaza - 112 4th Ave. SW]. Try to free yourself up that afternoon (take a break from midterm studying) - so that you can warm up to your Valentine's evening by showing industry that you 'Care About the Boo'.

If you would like to help spread the word, print out one of the adobe files below (your favorite one) and put copies up in your neighbourhood coffee shop, rez floor, on your wall...you get the idea.CaribouRally.pdf

A background file on Alberta Caribou Decline: Alberta Woodland Caribou Decline.pdf
A rally 'primer' to coax you into coming: Caribou Rally Primer.pdf
ConocoPhillips will be one of the rally targets as they failed to defer 2007 winter drilling activities in the Little Smoky Range as per the Eco Club's request (see previous blogs).

Why Suncor Energy will be one of the targets of the rally: Suncor Fact Sheet.pdf

We really need all of you who can possibly make it to show up for as much of the rally as you can. This is important. It's so easy just to show up, eat your complimentary Valentine's chocolate and hold up whatever sign you like best for a little while - but it makes all the difference in the world! Please email caribourally@hotmail.com to express interest so that we know how many people to expect.

If you would like to officially volunteer (to use on your resume, etc.) for this Eco Club event, send your interest to caribourally@hotmail.com - responsibilities would be minimal and would include helping to make signs, coming up with own catchy signs, and/or being an organizer for the rally itself.
