Studying the design of everyday things

Link: The End User Manifesto

Bunq emailed this the End User Manifesto to me. I'll just put up the first handful (which happen to be my favorites from the list):

Things that need to be in the mind of anyone building software, particularly for the Web.

1. Don't waste my time.

2. Help me do the right thing.

3. Respect my decisions.

4. Design well, and guide me to make the right decisions by that design.

5. Don't lie to me - if I see something in front of me, then I should be able to act on it unless the interface tells me I can't.

This list is in the spirit of the User Centered Group's "About" page.

Very interesting. Does anyone know if there is a similar list that relates to non-web applications?

gr8dude-

I haven't seen one- but maybe we can craft one up here. If you come across something, please share the link here!

You should take a look at Gnome HIG, and Apple HIG - comprehensive documentation that explains how GUIs should be designed in applications.

Both documents are very interesting, both provide graphical examples for most of the listed rules, etc. Microsoft has recently released a similar doc about Windows Vista.
