Motorola RAZR V3 Usability Review

a RAZR/Motorola support forum (here's one). If you have usability, interface, or user experience related comments, please feel free to share.

Nothing but glowing reviews all over the place for this phone. I bought it because my primary requirement was a small phone since I put it in my pocket. It is a great phone- lots of features that I’m sure you already know about. But here are my small gripes with it-

Issues:
1)The half second delay whenever I open the display. Often I find it has old information on it from the last time I opened the phone up. Like- if it’s set on “Loud” then (with the clamshell closed) I set it to vibrate, then flip open the clamshell later, I see it shows the “Loud” icon for a split second before it updates. Very silly looking

2)Bluetooth and sync- I still don’t know how I can sync with any contacts or backup. I guess I need to buy software to do this- that wasn’t what I thought when I bought it.. although I’m not surprised. However, I would have thought at a minimum I could plug the phone through USB and get the pictures off of it. Win XP cannot find any drivers though. So apart from a headset, it’s no good.

3)Speaking of the headset, I have to turn on bluetooth manually in order to use it. I guess that’s a good thing for security and battery life, but the phone gives me the impression that battery life will only last two seconds with BT turned on- so I manually turn on BT every time I want to use the headset which leads to dramatic underusage of the device. I’ve got the Motorola H820 (I think that’s what it is)- I also don’t like the way you turn it on/off. I hear the other headsets with the boom are better for that.

4)Even when I put some menu items like Bluetooth and audio settings using the soft buttons or the “main menu” I still have to dig through two or three more clicks/menus before I can activate the settings. Why can’t phone makers look at the tasks that people want to do with the dang
phones? Am I the only guy who wants one button access to switch from audible to vibrate? My first Nokia back in 97 did this quite well- you held the ”#” sign until it switch- and there was no audible confirmation of this which I liked (IIRC, it may have vibrated a bit when I switched.)

On the motorola the menu items (I’ve assigned “audio” to my left softkey) I have to select audio and usually two or three left or right clicks to get to the correct setting. I know you can also set the mode with the shell closed, but that’s a three or four button process too and that’s slightly more annoying because when you switch to an audible setting, you have to listen to the ringer volume. Look- I only want my phone to make noise when I have a call or a message of some sort. Be quite otherwise.

More:
Also- why can’t manufacturers make a phone that doesn’t have a stupid startup jingle when you turn it off or on? When the phone is in vibrate mode, it correctly does not make a noise (although I’ve read about phones that do!) why can’t this be an option that I can turn on or off? If you must insist on letting me know the phone is being turned on (even though I just pressed the button) can you please have a somewhat respectable notification? A standard beep perhaps? Why the little jingle?

Also- in somewhat contrast to the above paragraph- there on the RAZR, I don’t think there is quick enough feedback when I hit the power button. The keypad lights (I think) up- but in a lit room, you don’t see it. There is too long a delay from when you hold the button down from when you see the screen light up. This is worsened by the “hold down to power on” problem that I have. You never feel confident that you’ve held it down for three seconds unless you get feedback right away- so you hold it until you see the screen turn on. In addition, you hold it down probably a lot harder than you would normally to make sure you are in fact holding it down.

Picture the scene. The phone is OFF.
The alarm goes off at 7.30am
I wake up, turn the alarm off and turn the phone on.
It doesn't "kinda need to be on" Eddie. Someone has misinformed you.

Eddie Lopez 12. March 2007, 11:50

Doesn't that depend on the phone?

Anyway, it WillYum has a decent enough point. We've gone for years before cellphones without turning off our landline phone at night. Why should cellphones be any different?

I don't even have a landline. How would someone get ahold of me at night during an emergency of some sort? There's MANY reasons why you'd never want to turn your phone off.

In fact, some phones like Treos or Blackberrys never really turn off. You have to pull the battery out to really turn it off.

Stew, are you just talking about the phone ringer? Turning the ringer off... is that what you're suggesting for turing in the phone off?

Hi Eddie

I'm talking about turning the phone totally off.

Mainly to save the battery, so I don't have to keep charging the thing up more often.
Also to prevent me receiving texts from vodafone etc at 3am. I've also had instances of a text my mate has sent me in the afternoon not arriving until the middle of the night.

If you haven't got a landline then it would be a good idea to leave your mobile on throughout the night for emergencies and so on, but I have a landline so I turn the mobile off.

Cheers
John

Eddie Lopez 12. March 2007, 14:42

John-

Right. Well, I could see that being a problem. I just charge my phone overnight with it still turned on.

I have setting for Quiet mode, or "ringer only" which only makes noise for phone calls and not messages.

Thanks for the insight-
Eddie

Concur with all the comments, like Eddie, without a landline (though I wish I could afford one... practicality dictates one or the other). The simple point is that some folks do use their phones as more than just a phone and phone manufacturers embrace that with features like "alarm clock" or "calendar reminders".

If they want to embrace the idea of "an always on device" then it should be designed with considerations for such a device. Such as sleeping, waking, doctor's appointment, movie theatre, airplane (I actually have an airplane mode on my phone), business meeting, etc

Good ideas there WillYum.

And instead of continually making phones smaller, keep them the same size and make the battery bigger. Why do we need phones the size of matchboxes? That's one of the reasons I bought the RAZR. Opened up its a good size. It could be thicker with a bigger battery though.

Eddie 13. March 2007, 21:03

Stew-

That's a good notion worth exploring- the idea that are gadgets are now "small enough" for the most part- now we can use the space saved with advancing technology to make room for more "useful" things like retractable headphones, bigger batteries, detachable bluetooth headset...

I smell a new post brewing!

You need to hold the red button down for about 3 seconds for the phone to start. Hope this helps. If not take it back to the shop and swear a lot.

I have bought the new blue RAZR with double cameras. I had before the old silver RAZR. The problem I am facing is that I am unable to connect my bluetooth headset to my new RAZR. My bluetooth headset is only working with the old Motorola. I turned the bluetooth off in my old RAZR and erased the bluetooth headset reference from Device History in my old RAZR in order to connect it to my new phone but It is still not working with my new RAZR. My blewtooth is only working with the old phone. Any advice...?

I have owned a razr for a year now and not a day goes by that I think "this is the worst phone I have ever owned". Except for the style and the slim design, the phone is a worthless piece of crap that was designed by a brainless idiot.

5 times a day I find that the side buttons have been pressed in the course of my moving around and I have missed a call because it turned off the ringer. This happens to everyone I know who owns this phone.

At night, you cannot use this phone as described by others.

you cannot set speed dials on this phone - it is possible, but if you have that kind of time, you probably can afford to spend it making enough money to buy a different phone.

Voice quality is fair, at best.

well my razor will not charge. I recently got it from a friend and it was in great condition. It charged fine for about a month and all of a sudden for the past two days it just wont charge. I plug the charger in and connect it and the keypad will turn on and off. I then held it down and it turns on and says unable to charge. Then in some cases ill hold it down and it will charge and then it will just turn off. I don't get it. Maybe i need a new charger? or maybe its something within the phone itself? I do not know.

I'm having a problem with charging the Razr too. It worked fine for a while, then suddenly would have troubles charging, then just not charging at all. It's really frustrating and has made me want to smash the phone to pieces. However, it does charge through the computer.

Also, I've slammed the clamshell closed many times because of it not being able to charge. It hasn't broken or had a decrease in performance at all. For me, it has actually been a pretty durable phone. But because of the problems charging the phone, it can't even come close to being dependable.

In general the Motorola PC connectivity software sucks! If at all possible, buy a Nokia phone and your life shall be happier.

Having said that, until that day comes, I shall continue to use the Razor until it dies and need to update this stupid software.

Problems - too many to go into here, but some glaring ones are multiple entries appear for calendar and directories. You may one day see 5 Smith John s and when you delete the duplicates, you may find that you deleted the one that has the complete information (all the phones #s cell, home, office) and the other entries had none or one entry. So you end up losing information when you have a Motorola software for syncing. It slowly evaporates and you have to apologize to your friends and ask for numbers again.

For years Motorola phones, in my opinion, have the least user-friendly interface on the market. Missed call/new message alert, as well as phone on/off noise, HAS to be fully customisable. Even if a lot of money has been spent on a marketing campaign, where this sound is one of the key points.
People who advise to turn off the phone should frankly realise that a phone that is turned off is an alarm clock. And when I buy a phone, I expect it to be usable the way it is convenient for me, even while I am asleep.
