Studying the design of everyday things

Today we look at: the iron

,

There's always room for improvement I say... today it's the iron.
It’s too top heavy. Ever since the iron was invented, it has stood upright in “standby” mode on top of the ironing board. Yet, every board I’ve ever used or seen is notoriously wobbly; this mixed with the top heavy design of the iron yeilds some cautious movements on and around the ironing area. I realize the shape of the actual iron surface is probably dictated by design of clothing (although it would be nice if someone explained that further) but can’t we do a better job of distributing weight to the back/bottom of it?

Then there's the cool steam feature my iron has. You simply pour water into the top of it and it steams your garment as you go. Unfortunately, there is too small an opening for putting it directly under a faucet. And my guess is, unless you live in a small apartment, having a cup near where you are ironing is not nearly as likely as a faucet. You could do as I have and always keep a plastic cup near your iron. But why not make the iron easier to get water into it? How about building a funnel like apperatus onto the iron? Maybe even just a half funnel?
