Burn Baby Burn

“Burn Baby Burn”

The issue of flag burning seems to keep cropping up. Personally it appalls me to hear or see anyone burning the flag of the United States or any other country for that matter. People have been arrested, shot, beaten and jeered for such actions but is that reaction to an act worthy of repetition. It seems to me that in spite of my personal feelings there is a larger issue at hand.

If we have a law against burning anything in public or out of doors for environmental reasons I can see justification for arrest if that is indeed the penalty for burning something outside. If a person burns leaves outside and the penalty is a fine for destroying the environment then the same holds true for burning a flag. If in fact a person is arrested for the act alone of burning a flag then they should also be arrested for burning a piece of tie-dyed cotton. If they would not be arrested for that action then they in fact are being arrested for a display of dissatisfaction. Just how far it can go is up to opinions of lawmakers regardless of whether it is constitutionally just or not. I that think if we arrest citizens for burning a flag we should also arrest citizens for calling for a store manager and displaying our anger over being sold rotten fruit.

With all due respect to other freedom loving people, I do believe that under the constitution people have the right to express there feelings even if I do not agree with them. If a person burns a flag it can be ignored. When it draws too much adverse attention then there are those trying to impose their feelings on those that are burning the flag. When it gets too much supportive attention then there is an issue that needs to be explored.

When a union decides to strike there are usually people that are willing to bear signs and protest their issues. Burning a flag is obviously a form of protest and should be taken as such. Burning a piece of sewn material is no more a crime than burning leaves. It is the association of that piece of material to some idealistic nuances that is the real issue. Either this flag is democratic icon that is to be worshiped or it is not. Quite frankly, I appreciate the symbol that our flag represents but I do not think I can bring myself to worship any piece of material regardless of the fabric or design.

I’d like to go out and shot all flag burners but that would be as unlawful as arresting them for the sole act of burning the flag. I’d like to force all flag burners to love the flag the same way I do and I would also like to send all black people back to Africa. Of course that would mean deporting people to a foreign country to which many have never seen. Now that I think about it, I would like to deport all whites back to the jails of England but some are not even of British dissent. I would like to protest and call for a breakup of the United States. I would like to send everyone back to where they came from. If I am starting to sound ridiculous then you should feel what I feel about people that arrest anyone else because of their feelings. As a matter of fact I would like to arrest you if you do not agree with me. If you even think about sending an email disagreeing or showing any form of protest about my thoughts I would like to trace you and arrest you for having a different thought.

Why stop there? Why don’t we start arresting citizens for having blue eyes? So I don’t like to know about someone burning the flag. If you want to burn your flag then so be it; I’ll burn one too, who cares? Just do not take the flag off my flagpole and burn it because it is destroying my property not because you are burning a flag. The news media that was mentioned in another article on this site is probably responsible for propagating this issue as much or more than any other entity. Bear in mind that the news media caters to what they deem fit to report. They talk about what sells. That should tell us something about what the majority wants to hear. With that in mind there is only one place to lie the blame.

I hear many people complaining about how they are treated in certain stores yet they continue to frequent that store. I once watched a manager of a large store confront a couple in his store and search through their belongings while they were still in the store. He verbally accused them of stealing and proceeded to search their bags and even the woman’s pocket book. When he found nothing he left still ranting about thieves. I could not believe what I was witnessing. I gave the couple my business card and told them that they could count on me in court. I never heard from that couple. After that day I no longer set foot in that store although I’m sure the abused couple probably still shop there.

Sure I’m the guy that removed channel (4) from my remote control because they started using the word “Hell” on the air. I’m probably the only one back in 1966 that did that. Look at what they are saying now in front of your kids on daytime TV. So you want to arrest some person burning a piece of material? Let me suggest that you pull for arresting some producers for contributing to the moral decay of our country if not the contribution to the delinquency of minors. I don’t see anyone burning a flag or writing their congressman about the dereliction of the F.C.C. in failing to responsibly dealing with obscenity on TV. Maybe it’s because you feel that they have the right to free speech.

In conclusion, I guess I just have it all mixed up. TV networks have a right under free speech to use profanity without prior warning but flag burners don’t have any rights. People say to your face that they don’t like either situation but they continue to shop in stores that abuse them and rip them off. Did I mention that Advertisements can be canceled. Shows can be canceled and news can be made because Janet Jackson’s top slips below her breast line. Yet a show called “That Seventies Show” can release a barrage of ostentatious vulgar language and no one seems to notice. It’s not the only show but just the one that pops up on my TV after a show I enjoy watching. I might mention that it stays on for only as long as it takes to reach the remote. I suggest that we as a country need reform from the ground up. It starts with each one person. You need to take notice and protest. I don’t want you to burn a flag unless you have no other way to protest. What I want you to do is to flood your congressman or congresswoman. as the case may be, with protest letters to protest anything and everything that is against the fabric of moral growth. If they don’t respond, then elect one that will. Finally, stop using any store or service that is not genuine in their business efforts.

8 is enough

D4rk 4ng3l's sweet little newborn has made me miss my babies when they were babies.

I decided to post their pictures but could not immediately find baby pictures for all of them.
I'm missing baby pictures of 2 of my sons...Nikki and Lawrence. I have 5 sons and 3 daughters.

My oldest, my son Walter, turned 50 on July 4, 2008 and my youngest, my daughter, Jacqueline, turned 9 on April 5, 2008.

My twin grand-daughters will be 15 on October 15, 2008.

What'd You Do Back in "82"

Heroes

I look back on my life and smile...there are things which I selectively choose to forget but overall it has been a great journey of enlightenment.

I look back to my baseball injury and think it was well. It allowed me to go through this life in a position of normalcy. I enjoyed playing ball simply for me. I can boast of having hit 1.000 against one of baseball's greats Al Downing the great New York Yankee pichers. Ok it was back when he played for Trenton and I fought off a high outside strike that went into short right field. Today I like to say it was a solid smash into right field, but some know better.

I took the field in softball for my company a few years ago and made a diving short hop double play. When the CEO of my company called me into his office to talk about my catch I was thrilled to learn that people in my office of a company, 3rd largest privately owned company in their field in the US, were proudly talking about one of their oldest employees acting like a kid. All I know is that people see me as a senior citizen but when I take to the baseball field something happens to me, kind of like a super hero. I become a kid again.

Be all that as it may I am old enough to realize that there are times that God gives us te freewill choice of staying here or going home. Once when talking to a commercial airlines friend of mine I mentioned something that got me a lecture of me being one of those people like the rest of them that take flying too much for granted. He asked me if I knew what a landing was. Then proceeded to explain to me that a landing was no more than a controlled crash. Boy did that open my eyes to reality.

So when a person over 40 has an operation, even a minor operation it should never be taken for granted. At sometime during that operation God is going to ask if we are ready to come home. All of my prayers for someone having an operation is with the knowledge that they, my prayers, are selfish. It is my asking that God will convince the person that they still have things to do and people that need them right here.
This morning I went to church and prayed with the pastor for an internet friend who was having an operation. I prayed that the friend would not yet have become tired of their suffering and choose to go home.

I don't know that I would have an easy time accepting if they choose to leave just now when so many are in need of her kindness. She is not perfect and she is not without fault. She is just a person that is so loved by all that come into contact with her. That makes her a special person living on the face of this earth. She brings forth love and understanding. She has been a great influence on so many. I know that the families of some great people of this world both past and present do not see a family member as the world see them. This makes them no less heroes to many.

This person is a hero to me. She is the first "Internet" person I have ever met that is as of today on my heroes list. So I will be re-posting a poem I did years ago praising my life heroes. I will repost it to include my newest hero. There is nothing for her to live up to for it has all been done..

Even 5 years ago I would have never mentioned God in any public writing but as the years go on, I do not care to leave God out of all I do and say. I have friends that love God and friends that doubt God but for me I know only what I know. Sometimes without thought or by being tired or what ever else I say things that leave the door wide open for criticism, but that's the nature of man to disagree and doubt and speculate. It is called being human.

This blog is not subject for any criticism or doubt...it is a statement from me to any that want to read by their free will given by and of God. I proudly say that I pray that God will now and in my future let my hero outlive me. I say it and pray with all the selfishness I have within me.

Recent occurrences have kept me from wanting to mention my hero here by name but in my repost her "Internet" name will be proudly displayed.

You Roll Up the Sidewalks

, , , ...

We came back from Hatherford College, PA where the student population was under 1,000. This just might be the right atmosphere for my son. He had in the preceding weeks narrowed his decision down to either Hatherford or Harvard. We knew that there were Thousands of student at Harvard and worried that out son at age 15 might get lost in the enormity of the school.

When he made his final decision and choose Harvard we were just on to the next problem solving game presented in the education of "KIDS". My daughter 2 years the junior of her brother had never known any other school than the same one that her brother attended. This was by design rather than chance. After being satisfied that Harvard would not also take a younger sister in a two-for-one- package deal we were left to decide what we were going to do with her. She was 13 and too young for me to send to the convent. With two more years of high school left and no brother left to serve as protector we had a chore.

I decided that she should remain where her brother could keep tabs on her be near to his sister. I researched and decided on Phillips Academy in Andover Mass. It was a short distance from Cambridge and had the reputation of being one of the top academic high schools in the US After calling to set up an appointment. The drive from New Jersey was about 4 hours. We did the interview where they interview the family and the student together and then separately. We were told that we would be informed of the results.

The call came and I spoke to a "Ms. Better-than-thou", who told me that my daughter had met all the schools criteria, the family had also met the criteria ( I think this meant we could borrow enough to pay the slightly higher than college tuition and fees, and boarding, and food, and books and sidewalk fee. As we got toward the end of the conversation she said, "Now there is just one thing". "You people are from Newark, New Jersey and I know that Lauren is ahead of most and did well on her nationals but she is from Newark so we think if we can start her back one grade". My response to that. "Look Ms. Snooty, you're lucky I'm even thinking about letting my daughter go to your school. I letting you have the opportunity to act like she is a product of your educational system."

She asked to speak to my wife. My wife later told me that she had suggested that in the future she speak to my wife rather than me. The last thing I agreed to was that if she changed her mind she could call but other than that they were out. I wasn't going to sit by and take that from "Holier-than-thou" rich know it alls. After many calls I spoke on the phone to a representative of Milton Academy High School. It was a private high school with almost an identically good reputation for it's academics and was at least a dollar cheaper than Phillips.

I told the lady all about my experience with "Ms. Snob" from Phillips. I was matter of fact and we spoke of an appointment. I explained the urgency and was able to send my wife with my children two days later. After their interviews I was contacted by the school and informed that my daughter would make a most welcomed addition to Milton Academy. During this entire process some of my friends were trying to tell me about John Milton and his philosophy and doctrine. None of that bothered me. If anything it enhanced the purpose of choosing a private high school 300 miles away.

The icing on the cake and the convincing factor to let her go to Milton was during my conversation with my original contact. She told me that she wanted me to make a decision with my eyes wide open. She almost apologized to tell me that after school hours and after dark the students had very little to do. I asked her if she was trying to say the rolled up the sidewalks after dark. She chuckled and said ," well yes you might say it that way". It was right then that I knew this was the place I wanted my daughter. No mixed classes, eat diner and go to bed, guards at the girls dorms. This was what I had been searching for. Rah! Rah! Go Milton Fight!

My daughter went on to become the school student representative, the one that new student would meet first, the one that would take parents and students on tours. I delivered everything I promised in my daughter and they delivered everything they promised. A good quality education and invisibility from boys. Look I've already admitted to being a strict, stern parent. I never took the other option and locked her in her room for home schooling.

My daughter graduated from Milton in 1981 and went on to Princeton graduating in 1985
