Now that I have passed out from College in 2007, this song best describes the days I spent while studying Bachelor's of Computer Engineering in Mumbai !
You must have written essays in school – "If I were the Principal of my school" or "If I were the Prime-Minister" or essays on similar line. A few weeks ago some one posed a question – What would you do if you were the COO/CEO of a Software firm? Well the answers that I got to hear were on the lines of "I would go in for mergers and acquisitions" or "I would improve on our marketing" and a funny one "I would give every one a 30% pay hike!"
This lead me to wonder -What would I do if I was a CEO or COO of a software firm? After giving some thought, here are my two cents on this topic – Other than the normal stuff of management, providing leadership and motivating employees, as CEO/COO of my software firm I would like to focus on real product development. I would like my firm to focus on Research and Development which will lead to the creation of our innovative applications which will really make a difference to the world and also help the company make money! You would wonder why R & D? Just look at the Indian IT/Software industry and you would have know. We have some really talented people working in the industry. We can really do some great things, yet the Indian Software industry is known as the back-office of the world and we are doing only that kind of work. It’s about time we seriously address this issue so that the next Google, Yahoo or a Microsoft would come from India.
Yes. I say it again. History has a tendency to repeat itself ... And today when India defeated the world champions Australia in the Perth Test Match by 72 runs history repeated.
Lets go back to 2001. The Australians were on a roll. Having won a record 15 Test matches in a row , captain Steve Waugh and his team arrived for the tour of India. In the 1st test match Australia defeated India comprehensively in Mumbai. That made it 16 wins in a row. After day three of the 2nd test match , Australia were almost sure to win a record 17 tests in a row. But the Indians stopped them . The magical batting of VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid on the fourth day, followed up by a inspired bowling by Harbhajan Singh lead to famous Indian victory ! The Aussie juggernaut was stopped.
Back to 2008. The Australians were on a roll again. They hadn't lost a test match since 2005. More importantly they had not lost a test match at home since 2003. The last time they had lost in Australia was in December 2003 against India. After the controversial win in the Sydney Test Match Ricky's Pointing men had won a record 16 test matches in a row again. Ricky wanted to do one better than Steve Waugh by winning 17 (or more) test matches in a row. But their dreams were shattered. Aussies could not go ahead of 16 as they were defeated by India again ! History had repeated. VVS Laxman scored a wonderful 79 to help India set a target of 413 of which the Aussies eventually fell short by 72 runs.
The Perth Test Match is even more special due to the events that happened in and after the Sydney test match. Besides the wicket at Perth is supposedly the fastest wicket in Australia. This was supposed to be their fortress, which no can breach. Before the Test match started nobody gave India chance, pundits said the game will end in three and a half days... it did but India won ! We beat the Aussies literally in their own den and the fortress was breached. India became the first team from the subcontinent to defeat Australia in Perth !
Congratulations to the Indian cricket team ! The entire nation is proud the way you fought back ...
This is a small piece that I had written at the start of 2007
At the end of the sporting season of ’06 as is the case many athletes bid adieu to their sports. But at the end of ’06 two of my idols and two great sporting personalities decided to hang up their boots. These two gentlemen are legends in their respective sports. They are quite similar in many ways, yet different. They finished their careers at a time when they hold most possible records, records which will take some time and effort to be broken.
You can say both were rebels. Although one caused ripples and raised eye-brow at the start of his career leading the traditionalists label him as outrageous and brat, at the end of his career he was the darling of all. The other however always remained a "rebel" for some whereas hero and god for some others. Every fan had only two opinions about the "rebel" – either they hated him or they loved him. The fact was they could not just ignore him ... This remained true both for his fans and his colleagues. You would have guessed by now whom I am talking about – the first person in question is the great tennis legend Andre Agassi and the second one is probably the greatest formula one driver ever Michael Schumacher.
These two men entertained and thrilled us with great performances year after year. As they leave us, let us all stand up give them a rousing applause for all that we got from them – the joys, the disappointments and the memories ...
Yes thats how my feeling is . In the second test match played between India and Australia in Sydney that concluded today The Umpires and not the Australian cricket team led to India's loss. The Umpires made 11 wrong decisions all against India. I know the umpires are human and they are bound to make errors. But 11 of them and all against India ??? Give me a break. The wrong decisions included - not giving that cry-baby Symonds not out thrice even he was clearly out, Letting Pointing off the hook once, giving Indian batsmen Wasim Jaffer out of a no ball, giving Dravid and RP Singh out when they were not, And to top it off, Umpire Mark Benson consulted with Australian captain Ricky Pointing before giving Ganguly out. WTF ??? Can't he consult his other on-field umpire Steve Bucknor or go to the third umpire ???
The final nail in the coffin was from that cry-baby Andrew Symonds who wrongly alleged that Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh racially abused him. The match referee Mike Proctor banned Harbhajan Singh for 3 test matches. Its absolutely shocking and foolish decision. It is important to note that there was no evidence whatsoever that Harbhajan racially abused Symonds . Nor the umpires heard it , nor there is any audio or video evidence. The decision to ban Harbhajan was taken only on the basis of Matthew Hayden and Micheal Clarke. What ? Are those players God ?? And why did the match referee reject the testimony of the great Sachin Tendulkar who was batting with Harbhajan Singh ????
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian cricket team have decided to appeal against it. Its high time we do something against it ... its like racial discrimination against India ... Many Indians have expressed that the Indian Cricket Team should stop tour now and return home.
I don't want to say much , just watch and listen to the reaction of Indian captain Anil Kumble who is one of the most respected and gentlemen cricketer , you will understand what I am feeling and whole of India is ...
