Politics

,

A politician grows at the grass-root level. He learns the trade of tricks at young age at the grass root level say at the college or university level, and what he learns carries forward when he moves on to higher level like city, state and national level politics. Looking at the way things happening in the Indian Student's association elections in UMBC and some other elections that took place in Indian Universities recently, I am not surprised at the state of Indian politics. The future also probably remains dim.

Quantity Matters

,

This is a conservation that I had with a friend, just before going to India for the winter break in December 2008.

Me: I am going to cook when I go home in the winter break
Friend: You will have to be careful. You will probably mess up. You cook in larger quantities here as compared to what you would do at home

And how correct he was, this I have been realizing in the past week or so.

With time on hand today, I decided to cook for myself in the afternoon (as compared to cooking for 5 persons (+ 5 i.e the evening meal + next day afternoon lunch at the same time)). I almost messed up the amount of salt and masalas that I needed to add. I ended up adding a little more than what it was needed for a one person meal.

Conclusion – So even if in my wildest dream I had imagined that I had become a “good cook” (good is a very relatively term! bigsmile ), I have realized that there is a lot more to learn …

Ganapati Celebrations in UMBC !

,

One of the things that I thought I would miss in the US would be Ganesh Chaturti or Ganapati Celebrations that we have every year back home in India. But UMBC is really special. We actually have Ganesh Chaturti celebrations here. Ok UMBC is not sponsoring it, but for quite some years now, at a senior student's house we have the celebrations for 5 days. So for the past four days my mornings and evenings, I am enjoying my aartis ... the sweet sound of Sukharta Dukharta with friends brings a lot of peace to me, the prasad that each one volunteers to make, its all here in the US too ! Tomorrow will be Ganesh Visarjan ... the last day of Ganesh Celebrations here in UMBC ... just the way, we celebrate back home...

I am really lucky that I have not missed my Ganapati celebrations here in the US.
The Ganesh Chaturti Celebrations indeed makes UMBC very special to me. smile
