Tips for getting good candid shots?

Anybody can try to get more good candid photos of pretty girls out and about (and will definitely post), but I would appreciate any tips from some of the "pros" here.
Do you mostly use telephoto lenses?
Do you shoot from the hip?
Has a woman ever objected to your photo? (or the guy they are with get mad)?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
