9, Seattle, Opera
Wow, what a busy day! Everyone was able to show up and seemed to have had a good time. There were a number of people from different companies, but also several people from the My Opera Community, including
organicchunkysalsa,
DotEd,
JoniMueller, Daniel Goldman of
Opera Watch. Here's a short summary of what was covered during the presentation.
Best Damn Tech Show, Period has posted several videos and image for everyone to check out. I'll be updating this soon, so be sure to check back!
Jon pulls up in the Seattle Slipper - an old fashioned wooden speedboat. With a short introduction and a few photos snapped, we were in the main conference room of McCormick and Schmick's in downtown Seattle.
Jon von Tetzchner begins the introduction giving a brief overview of Opera's goals, direction and vision. Jon passes the mic to Desktop lead, Johan Borg.
Johan gives a presentation of his favorite features of the Opera 9 browser including BitTorrent, widgets, customized searches, site preferences, thumbnail preview, content blocking, trashcan and popup blocking. His short demo shows everyone not only what the features are, but how to use them easily. Johan then introduces Ashwin Navin and Bram Cohen of BitTorrent Inc. They discuss the power of BitTorrent technology and how it has changed the way many look at peer distribution. Simply put: the more popular the content, the fast it is for everyone to get. Integration into the Opera Browser takes the sharing technology into the homes and onto the desktops of everyone.
Matt May of Blue Flavor gives a great speech about Web standards and their importance in a modern "Web 2.0".
Finally, our own Charles McCathieNevile gave a demonstration of Opera widgets and their ease of development.
