Apparently an earthquake struck around 11:37 here today.

It happened on the North side, I didn't feel a thing. :eyes:

I managed to sleep through Ireland's first ever recorded earth quake, some years ago.

wickedlizard 11. July 2009, 15:22

I was wide awake for our 1998 one. That one destroyed 2,500 homes on my island. Pretty horrific. 8 people lost their lives. I will never forget that. awww It was horrible.

garlingmatthews 11. July 2009, 15:32

Bloody hell.

wickedlizard 11. July 2009, 15:34

that's nature for ya. Got to respect it.

garlingmatthews 11. July 2009, 15:38

It's something that one can never really prepare for. I love starring out to sea, but I'm always aware that there's an outside chance that a forty foot wave will sweep in just to remind us who's boss.

:left: yeah...

PainterWoman 11. July 2009, 15:45

Have only experienced a couple of tremors where I live. The actual quake was 200 miles away near the Grand Canyon.

wickedlizard 11. July 2009, 16:26

Nothing new to me... :left: Felt them since I was a kid in California. :left: Now here. :faint:

qlue 11. July 2009, 17:07

I recall when I was living in Johannesburg as a kid. We had a visitor stay over once who nearly shat his pants when an earth tremor hit.. The best part was, when he asked, "what was that! :yikes:", and we all answered, "what was what?".

i could say that i envy you for your experiences, but am not sure that would be the right word to use.

i have never experienced any of these types of earthly phenomenon.

i do though, feel sadness for those who are lost in any type of man-made or natural disaster.

I have experienced several earthquakes (the ones that could be felt) and the worse one was in 1998. I think, it lasted for about 30 seconds, maybe more; I will never forget the sound that came out of our building :insane: I live on 7th floor, can you imagine how much it was shaking?

wickedlizard 11. July 2009, 22:03

The worst ones I experienced were one I felt in school when I was in the 5th grade back in California. I was the only one who noticed and asked the teacher why did the classroom feel like it was on gelatin. She panicked and sent us all under our desks. We were doing some crossword puzzle on nutrition and I remember I was writing pork chop when then the classroom suddenly felt wobbly. Then the 2nd bad one was the one in 1998, here, and it was about the same as the one I felt in the 5th grade. I didn't get scared by it. NOTHING happened at my house or even my side of the island, it wasn't till my mom called that I realized it had been very nasty on her side of the island. awww I can't even begin to describe the shock I felt when I got to her house shortly afterwards. Her house was all cracked up, you could see the street through the walls, everything inside had been literally thrown to the floor. I can't even imagine what my mom felt.

SqueakeyCat 11. July 2009, 22:07

so sorry to hear that Issy

garlingmatthews 11. July 2009, 23:00

But why go on living there?

gdare 12. July 2009, 07:23

I remember that, we were discussing it somewhere around here, in yours or mine blog. It was really terrible. The worse I remember was in Montenegro in 1979. Almost every town and willage was damaged, some of them very bad and 136 people died in Montenegro and neighbouring Albania.
In Belgrade it felt for a 2-3 seconds :left:

wickedlizard 12. July 2009, 09:06

@ Garling - earthquakes can happen anywhere - even in places that it isn't so common. If not earthquakes, it's other natural disasters.

@ Darko - yeah, we did discuss this awhile back.

@ Kim - it's okay, my mom is fine. Her house got restored, she lost some stuff because things break, but that's just a part of life.

SqueakeyCat 12. July 2009, 09:22

glad she is ok

garlingmatthews 12. July 2009, 10:13

But there of levels of danger. Los Angeles, for example, runs a high risk. Ireland has never had a serious 'quake, hasn't had much extreme weather (yet), has no dangerous animals...

rose-marie 12. July 2009, 11:26

Gavin - May I remind you that Sweden has had two minor earthquakes since December (I think), and also has it shares of dangerous animals?
Oh, and the weather sometimes suck, too!

garlingmatthews 12. July 2009, 11:28

Rose - Sweden, yes, but I'm a daredevil p:

Dacotah 12. July 2009, 13:29

I hope no one got hurt or killed.
