A hurricane warning is in effect for all of the Azores Islands. A hurricane warning means that hurricane conditions are expected within the warning area within the next 24 hours. Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion. For storm information specific to your area, please monitor products issued by the Azores Meteorological Service.
At 500 AM AST (0900z) the center of the well-defined eye of Hurricane Gordon was located near latitude 38.1 north...longitude 38.7 west or about 630 miles (1010 km) west of Terceira in the Azores Islands. Gordon is moving toward the east near 28 mph (44 km/hr) and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. On the forecast track Gordon will pass near or move across the Azores late this afternoon or evening. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 105 mph (165 km/hr) with higher gusts. Gordon is a category two hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. Although some slow weakening is forecast during the next 24 hours, Gordon is still expected to be a hurricane as it passes near or across the Azores Islands. In addition, stronger winds will be likely over the higher terrain of the Azores. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km). Estimated minimum central pressure is (970 mb) 28.64 inches. Large and dangerous battering waves along with storm surges of 1 to 3 ft are possible in areas of onshore winds in the Azores. Reports from an air force reserve unit reconnaissance aircraft indicate that tropical depression seven has strengthened into a tropical storm.
At 500 PM EDT the center of Tropical Storm Gordon was located near latitude 21.6 north...longitude 57.3 west or about 425 miles northeast of the leeward islands. Gordon is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph and this motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph. with higher gusts, additional strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center. Estimated minimum central pressure is (1003 mb) 29.62 inches.

At 500 AM EDT the center of Tropical Depression Seven was located near latitude 20.5 north - longitude 55.1 west or about 495 miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands. The depression is moving toward the west-northwest near 7 mph and this motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. September 10,2006 -- Small and slowly-moving tropical depression forms east-northeast of the Leeward Islands
At 1100 PM EDT the center of tropical depression seven was located near latitude 20.2 north - longitude 54.5 west or about 525 miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands. The depression is moving slowly toward the west near 6 mph. A gradual turn toward the west-northwest is expected during the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 30 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 24 hours, and the depression could become a tropical storm on Monday. Estimated minimum central pressure is (1012 mb) 29.88 inches.
At 4 PM AST A small area of low pressure located about 550 miles east-northeast of the Leeward Islands is moving westward at about 10 mph. Shower and thunderstorm activity has become more concentrated near the circulation center and it could potentially become Hurricane Gordon and Tropical Depression Seven tonight or tomorrow.

The name Gordon was first used in 1988

In 1988 Hurricane Gordon was active from the 7th - 11th of September. The Storms maximum winds: 70 Knots with a minimum pressure of: 983. Gordon was a category 1 hurricane. Gordon formed in the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall in Louisiana, and then passed on into Texas.

In 1994 Hurricane Gordon was active from the 2nd - 8th of November. The Storms maximum winds: 75 Knots with a minimum pressure of: 980. Florence was a Category 1 hurricane that formed in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Honduras, brushed Hati, then traveled along the north coast of Cuba, and crossed the west coast of Florida, emerging in the Atlantic, then it swung up to the coast of North Carolina before turning direction and striking Florida again.

Gordon reportedly caused the death of 1,122 people in Haiti mostly as a result of mudslides. .

United Press International (UPI) reports indicate that there were 6 deaths in Costa Rica. Other reports show 5 deaths in the Dominican Republic, 2 in Jamaica, and 2 in Cuba.

There was a total of 8 deaths in Florida directly attributable to Gordon. One man drowned off Ft. Lauderdale Beach in Broward County in a rip current while rescuing his 8-year old son. One male surfer drowned off Haulover Beach in north Dade County. One woman drowned along a north Dade beach. One man drowned and one woman nearly drowned in Dade county when a car plunged into the Miami River during heavy rains. One man drowned in Dade county when a car plunged into a canal during heavy rains. Two men drowned when a boat was overturned at Hillsboro Inlet in Broward county by swells from Gordon (then located off the Georgia coast). One 74-year old man was killed by trauma to the head, received during the tornado in Brevard county. This tornado also caused 40 injuries (six people hospitalized, two serious injuries).
