In the Azores, we stopped hunting whales in 1986. Many of the old whale hunters are still around, are now whale watchers, expert watcher´s of the sea. Every year, all over the Azores, regattas take place in the different villages, and also on many of the islands. The stories told by these whale hunter´s are thrilling! A good friend, Tomas, nearly lost his life twice to an enraged sperm whale. He passed away recently. He will be missed.
The whaling industry started in the Azores, with the arrival of the huge American whaling ships. The stories that surround Herman Melville´s infamous Moby Dick, is thought to have been born in the Azores. The American ships had smaller boats in which the hunter´s went out to hunt. A lot of the crew to these American ships were of Azorean descent. The reason why there is such a large community of Azorean people on the East Coast of America. Many left the Azores and started a new life in places like New Bedford, Cape Cod, and other east coast places. After the Americans moved down to the southern hemisphere to hunt. The Azoreans carried on the whale hunting for many years, and sold the by products to the Americans to survive. Not many whales were hunted on average per island... on an annual basis, depending on the population of the island, a total of 36 whales would be hunted on an annual basis. It was for survival and not greed that the whale´s were hunted...
Today, only a handful still build these beautiful handcrafted boats... and it´s with pride that they are sailed in races!

Pedras no caminho?
Guardo todas, um dia vou construir um castelo...
- Fernando Pessoa...
translation by Isabel Gallagher:
I may have defects, live anxiously and sometimes become irritated, but I never forget that my life is the biggest company of the world, and that I can avoid that it goes bankrupt.
To be happy is to recognize that it is worth living, even with all the challenges, misunderstandings, and the periods of crisis. To be happy, is to stop being the victim of problems and being the author of your own story. To cross deserts outside of yourself, and to find the oasis inside your soul.
To thank God for each morning for the miracle of life. To be happy, is not to be afraid of your own emotions. It is knowing how to speak about yourself. To have the courage to listen to a "no". To have the strength to receive a criticism, even when unjust.
Stones in the road?
I save every single one, one day I´ll build a castle.
- Fernando Pessoa - portuguese poet.

When will you come back...
Your house falls to ruin.
You left everything behind...
No dreams left to paint?

It´s a crying shame.
