Win a Wii with Opera Wiidgets

, , ,

It's time for another competition to keep all you widget developers occupied over the holidays. And since the best prize this holiday season is a Nintendo Wii, wii're giving you a chance to win one.:headbang:

But that's only the grand prize. We're also giving away a Nintendo DS Lite:yes: and a total of eight Opera goodie bags, stuffed with a bunch of Opera t-shirts, pins, pens, stickers, etc.

So how does this competition work? It's simple. We're looking for the best widgets uploaded during the next month. Every three days, Opera will select the best widget from the widgets submitted during the days prior to the selection.

Make Your Voice Heard

We're adding another dimension this time, though. Since widgets are made by the community, the community should also decide the winners of the big prizes. To determine the winner of our grand prize and our second prize, the community will vote on their favorite from a list of five finalists chosen by Opera for their code quality, usability, aesthetic quality, innovation and download numbers.

Besides voting, you can also make your voice heard by being a community reviewer.

Community Reviewers

Once Opera select the 5 finalists, the community is invited to review the widgets on their blogs. A reviewer can then submit a link to their reviews of the five widgets. Once we accept the reviews, we will link to them on the Opera Widgets blog. To be a community reviewer, you must review all five widgets. We reserve the right to accept or reject any review.

Worthy Widgets

Goodie Bag winners will be selected by Opera after our Web applications team evaluates code quality, usability, aesthetic quality, innovation. Opera will then select five finalists from ALL widgets submitted during the competition period. DS Lite and Wii winners will be selected from those five finalists by a community vote. The polling feature is designed to protect against bots or other poll manipulations.

The Community Review idea is a *GREAT* idea for this competition... it would be nice to have the reviews (in some capacity) in conjunction with the competition. It will really help to drum up competition.

Maybe have a competition for reviews  The top reviewers (who would review widgets throughout the competition) can get spotlighted reviews or something when the 5 finalists roll around.

...well, whatever the logistics would be, I think it would be better to encourage the community to write about what's going on *during* the competition to drum up more interest.

Is 15-17 December the first widget submission period ?

thomas.ford 13. December 2006, 22:34

Eddie_Lopez: I think that's a great idea. Let me talk about it with the rest of the team. We'll come to a decision tomorrow.

dantesoft: We'll begin accepting widgets tomorrow for the competition.

This is shaping up to be a very cool competition.

Eddie_Lopez: After a round of discussions, we decided to keep the community review module as it is. We would like to encourage anyone to blog about or spotlight their favorite widget(s). But for this competition, we're going to stick with the original set-up. I'm sure I can find some things around the office to reward the people who post detailed and rational reviews of the five finalists.

But anyone can and should blog about their favorite widgets. We might even link to very good posts on this blog...especially if you guys let us know where to find them.

Thanks!

Thanks for the consideration. That actually means much more to me than the actual result.

What about uploading new versions of existing widgets? Do you check theses too? Or only a new one?
