Opera Widgets blog

Show us your skills and win!

Update: We have extended the deadline for submitting widgets to midnight February 3rd.

This Christmas the Web Applications team would like to bring some music into your lives. What better way to do that than to award the most killer widget with a Wii and Guitar Hero III! :D

A Nintendo Wii and Guitar Hero III

The Nintendo Wii is a great device, and has been sold out at stores around the globe for a year! Guitar Hero III has
commanded a lot of respect over the home entertainment market. it's a game you will love, just like us here at Opera

And two guitars!

The Web Applications team likes to have competitions. Infact we like to compete (and win  ) so much so, that we're giving you two guitars so you can play with a friend! All you have to do to get this grand prize is: Make a killer Opera Widget.

In the past, we've had many people make widgets and our widgets repository now hosts over a thousand of them. Check them out for some inspiration! Think of widgets that you would like to use on your Mobile phone or ones that you would like to have on your TV. Imagine a world of desktop applications, made using Open Web Standards. What would you like to do today, online or offline? it's up to you!

T-Shirts every week!

The Giving season has begun and we are giving away two t-shirts every week to the best widgets for the previous week. When we award our users, we like to go all out. :D

Bonus points will be awarded for widgets that have a local aspect, e.g. widgets that have more value for someone living in a particular city. A good example are the existing widgets offering public transportation information for Oslo.

Until the 20th of January, we will take each new or updated widget and:
  • Measure their coolness
  • Observe their usefulness
  • Check their Code quality
  • Count download numbers
  • and finally, look out for innovative developers
All widgets uploaded between the 20th of December 2007 and midnight 3rd of February 2008 will be judged, and the winner will be announced before the 8th of February!

Best of luck! and Godspeed :D

Until the 20th of January, we will take each new or updated widget and:

Is that any widget that already exists and has been updated, or just any widget submitted now which may be updated before Jan 20th?

(And no, I'm not planning on updating and re-submitting my existing widgets!)

Geir Pedersen 20. December 2007, 15:09

We'll consider new widgets and existing widgets receiving a substantial update during the competition period.

Why not? I want a xmas version of touchTheSky!!! It is the only widget I use on a regular basis

johnnysaucepn 20. December 2007, 19:46

I'll just change it so that it always says 'Snow'! Is that Christmassy enough? :D

Guillermo 20. December 2007, 20:14

to me? sure!, the only problem is the people over here may be a little bit confused by the fact that there are about 40ºC on this afternoon! Well, we are all about to get delusional because of the heat, so it will not matter.

Oh man :(, I was planning to do a Widget of my country (Colombia) for the competition, but it´s imposible because:

Measure their coolness
Observe their usefulness
Check their Code quality
Count download numbers
and finally, look out for innovative developers

Well, let's think in something else :).

johnnysaucepn 25. December 2007, 15:25

No, you'll get EXTRA points for doing a Columbian widget, regardless of number of downloads. Downloads will get taken into account, but they'll know if it's a large number of downloads for a single country.

Gautam Chandna 7. January 2008, 13:19

johnnysaucepn is right. We will measure download numbers keeping in mind what your target audience is.

Daniel Sitnik 3. February 2008, 01:32

Man I just submited a widget and it appears as 1:28, I guess it's GMT time. :worried:
I don't know what timezone you guys are considering but it's 23:30 here in Brazil, I thought I was on time.

I hope it gets in the competition cause it's a really nice widget that some people have been asking for and nobody did up to now.

Remco Lanting 3. February 2008, 23:04

I just submitted one too. The widget upload wizard made me get over midnight a tiny bit. Ah well, it's not about the winning, is it? P:

Oh, and you might have been a day early even. Or I'm a day late in which case I'll just eat extra cake at my fathers 50th birtday tomorrow to eat away my sorrows :D

Gautam Chandna 6. February 2008, 19:31

We always try to figure out if it was midnight at your place when you submitted, and we're never too strict if we see a clear winner.. so dont worry too much :-)

We're having a hard time judging all the widgets... stay tuned for the results

Gautam Chandna 8. February 2008, 12:07

Judging is taking longer than we expected... Sorry for not having the results yet, but we'll try and get them out asap.

Stay tuned!

Daniel Sitnik 8. February 2008, 13:57

I'm tuned! I'm travelling but lucky me I've got Opera Mini!

chalix 8. February 2008, 16:54

Isidoro Russo 15. February 2008, 09:03

Any news?

ja002h 15. February 2008, 14:36

The suspense is killing me..

Isidoro Russo 18. February 2008, 16:06

Are we there yet?

Daniel Sitnik 21. February 2008, 05:40

Any updates?
It's already February 21!

ja002h 1. March 2008, 17:48

Admit it, you guys forgot to get a Wii ahead of time and now you can't find one anywhere!

Seriously, any ETA??

Gautam Chandna 4. March 2008, 12:58

[from the widgets forum ]
Hi guys, I know this is wrong. We have a list of winners that we've been sitting on for a while, unfortunately we haven't been able to say it out loud yet.

Please bear with us as we find our way out of something we didnt expect. I'm sorry but I cant disclose everything in a public forum and we really appreciate the hard work that you guys have put into this competition. I guess next time we should just have a public voting mechanism to find a winner instead of us doing the judging ourselves. This has been a tough competition and even more so for us, as we learn to host them.

I apologise for the delay, the winners will be notified once the announcement is public and please feel free to batter my inbox with complaints. I'll try and make sure this never happens again.

Daniel Sitnik 5. March 2008, 03:52

Hi Gautam, thanks for clearing things up for us.
We understand you can't disclose everything in a public forum, and we appreciate the work you guys had to host this competition with such great prizes.

We can handle the delay, but please just keep us informed so we know we haven't been forgotten! :D

Brian Huisman 8. March 2008, 13:29

I think the worst thing about this delay is not that the winners have not received their prizes, but that it is delaying any future widget contests until this one is resolved!
