Widget competition at Assembly

, , ,

Opera's going to Assembly, a massive demoparty in Helsinki. It's very similar to The Gathering, a demoparty in Norway we went to earlier this year. We've got an Assembly blog up and running to give our sleep deprived perspective on the show. And we're also running, as we tend to do at these events, a widget competition.

Chaals just posted a little bit about the widget competition over on the Assembly blog. If you're there and want to win some sweet prizes, just check out the post for instructions. We're giving away a Nokia 770, Nintendo DS Lite and Nokia N90.

But regardless of how your competitive impulses are pulsing, if you visit our booth, we'll make it worth your time by loading you down with all the Opera swag your little mitts can hold. We'll be there all day and all night and I'm sure the guys and gal there could use the company. So come on by and say hi.

The Big Mac

, , ,

We've run this widget competition for a little more than a month. And by now I know you're all wondering what we've got planned for the big prize. I mean, we've got weekly prizes from ThinkGeek, two Nokia 770s for our monthly prizes and then the Big Mac.

We're giving the winner a tricked out, double stuffed, supersized Macbook Pro. 15" screen, sweet Intel Core Duo and all the trimmings. But we're adding a little secret sauce too. We're including all the software to make it a dual boot machine - meaning you can run both Windows XP and Mac OS X. When you add it all up, the total prize is valued at more than $2500. You know, we couldn't give away just anything to the eventual widget maestro.

This isn't Vegas; you've got an excellent chance of winning. We get a handful of widgets each week. All entries - every single one - will be eligible for the Grand Prize, so get coding. The clock ticks...

Good luck to all!

What a Bargain

, ,

You've seen Holger (2x), Johnnysaucepn and Benjamin (3x) walk away with some excellent ThinkGeek necessities. But now it's time to lock and load your AirZooka's my friends because they're coming for us...in a good way.

ThnkGeek has really supported the My Opera widget competition and when they saw we released Opera 9, they wanted to celebrate with us. So now everyone on My Opera has a special deal awaiting them courtesy of ThinkGeek. Aren't these guys cool?

From now until the 4th of July, you can take $5 off of any purchase of $30 or more from ThinkGeek. Simply use the code "Opera" when you place your order. The fine print mentions that it excludes shipping and handling.

This offer is good for any My Opera community member so go ahead and celebrate the lazy days of summer with some excellent new toys.

Widget comp vs. Widget World Cup

, , , ...

So you've seen the announcement of the Widget World Cup. You're probably wondering "WTF?!? Do I have to enter more than once? Do I have to do twice the work? What's up, man?"

The answer is nope.

Let me first explain the differences. The My Opera widget competition is to get developers like Benjamin and Johnnysaucepn creating cool widgets. The Widget World Cup is to show people how fun and useful they are. So they work together. And since they're related, we had to make submitting for both really easy.

And we did.

[Charlton-Heston-as-Moses voice]From this moment forward, you need only select your country when uploading widgets. You will be entered in both competitions automatically. Let my people upload [/Charlton-Heston-as-Moses voice]

But what if you already made a widget and want to enter? No sweat. You need to do three things, all really easy.

1. Edit your widget (log on and upload an edited version of your widget or just upload the same one)
2. Specify your country
3. Write an email to our prize jury explaining why you deserve to be Ms. America.

Just kidding...

3. Write an email to widgetcomp@opera.com and let us know the widget and country. This is to help us keep track of everything.

So keep making widgets and tell you friends to try them out. You could walk away with all our cool prizes and some cash. If I only knew a little javascript, I'd give you guys a run for your money. Instead you can just make a run at ours.

What's in the Saucepan?

, , ,

Apparently some cool prizes from ThinkGeek.

After my plea to developers around the world to aid my village of cool prizes and after I promised some trendy Opera 9 threads (note: flash needed), it seems someone stopped the widget bandit. Sort of.

Johnnysaucepn came to our aid by dethroning the reigning widget champion. He created a reminder widget that uses - what else - vikings to keep you informed. I like it. I rely on it to remember important things I have to do. And what are those things? Bushing my teeth, feeding my fish, hanging the DJ, etc.

But despite the secret sauce taking this week, he couldn't stop Bejamin from walking away with our first monthly prize, a Nokia 770. Rock on, man.

The Prize Haul Continues

,

So now we know Benjamin Joffe has won for the third straight week. I'm sure you're all curious to know exactly what ThinkGeek goodies are headed to his doorstep.

Week One:
1. Airzooka Air Gun
2. Altec Active Noise Reduction Headphones

Week Two:
1. GameCom Pro 1 USB Gaming Headset
2. USB Beverage Chiller
3. USB Mini Lava Lamp

Week Three:
1. Pixel Blocks
2. Sonic Impact SoundPads
3. ThermalTake XRay
4. Airzooka Air Gun

You should immediately notice that Benjamin has won two Airzooka's and two headsets. What can I say? We never anticipated that one widget bandit would run away with the competition.

I should say congratulations to Benjamin. He's made some excellent widgets and hopefully there's more to come. Remember that next week, if we don't have a different winner, Benjamin will walk away with a Nokia 770. It's up for grabs as our first monthly prize.

We have a winner...

, , ,

Just not a new winner. Benjamin Joffe, come on down. You've won again, you lucky guy. Just what do you win, well, I'll have that in another post where I plan to describe some other cool prize information. But for now, Benjamin has another ThinkGeek prize pack coming down under for his widget Torus. If you've played Tetris, this widget takes it to a new level.

But enough of the nice talk...

Have you seen The Seven Samurai? I feel like one of the villagers. Our prizes are being raided by the widget bandit and we need to find some sword swinging samurai Web developers to make the competition safe again.

But unlike those starving farmers, I'm not going to try and bribe you with rice. Oh no. It's going to be better than that. We've commissioned some fashion designers to create exclusive shirts for the launch of Opera 9 and I promise one of each design to the first person to stop the merciless onslaught of Benjamin Joffe.

Please someone, anyone deliver us from his wrath...

Ben does it again

, , ,

I'm sure the title gives it away, but Benjamin Joffe has done the double. Congratulations! This time the competition was fierce and it came down to just a few points, but it still seems that he cannot be taken down.

The winning widget, Bounce, puts everyone into the World Cup spirit. You may not be Ronaldinho - in fact you probably aren't - but if you can bounce the football more than 40 times, who am I to judge? My personal record is 29, but I plan to spend a few more hours practicing...er, testing the widget.

So now we will send two prize packs from ThinkGeek to Ben in Australia. For this week, he receives:

1. GameCom Pro 1 USB Gaming Headset

2. USB Beverage Chiller

3. USB Mini Lava Lamp

We've got many more weeks to go, but so far Ben is undefeated. Is there no one who can challenge him? I suppose we will find that answer next week.

Good luck and happy coding!

And the winner is...

, , ,

So we just wrapped the first week of our summer-long widget contest. I know you're twitching with anticipation to find out the winner's identity.

After conferring with our panel of expert judges and accountants, we award the first week's prize to: Benjamin Joffe and his widget, The Colours Of The Rainbow. Congratulations, Benjamin!

I know you want to know exactly what Benjamin has won. As I mentioned, ThinkGeek generously came up with weekly prize packages for our widget authors. This week, our winner receives:
