You Got Skills

, , ,

who won a wii with guitar hero 3 banner

The Web applications team has finally determined a winner from the "Show Us Your Skills!" contest we hosted back in December, last year. We know many of you have waited a long, long time for the results, so without further ado we're proud to present the winners:

Widget: Judges' Notes:
Project Velt This is a full-featured web-based slideshow generator. Every aspect of this widget has been made to such perfection that we simply could not overlook it. From default templates to saving your own files, formatting text to exporting it as a presentation - this Widget has everything. It even has an in-built clock! As a result of this, we're proud to crown gyrobo as the winner of our contest and will therefore receive a Nintendo Wii with Guitar Hero III and 2 guitars.
RoadTrip This widget will search for the best route to visit a list of locations. This widget has got style. It manages to put together the Google Maps API with an awesome user interface - making it one of the best widgets we received for this competition.
3D Mesh Demo Wii Opera SDK demo 3D mesh Widget.
PlanetWerks An interactive, educational and accurate Solar System simulation.
TriMet Transit Tracker This tracks public transit in Portland, Oregon, United States.
Social graph Social graph for all My Opera blogs.

So, there you have it folks. Big congrats to all the winners! Since we don't want anyone to leave empty handed we will award the other five great entries with Opera goodie-bags.

There can be only one

, ,

I know you've all been wondering just what it is we get up to around here. After all, we were supposed to announce the winner of this MacBook Pro on Tuesday. We kept you waiting, but we saved the best surprises for last like an M. Night Shyamalan movie before you knew who he was and that his name meant there was definitely a twist at the end.

We had some consistent winners throughout this competition. Holger Will and johnnysaucepn won several times. johnnysaucepn succeeded in saving our villagers from the widget bandit.

Of course we can't forget the widget bandit himself. Benjamin Joffe seemed an unstoppable force. Frankly, he still is and we won't forget his domination. Week after week, he kept cranking out little bits of Web technology goodness. They were sleek, fast, well-coded, useful, addictive. As a PR guy, I try not to involve myself with concepts my primitive mind cannot comprehend, yet even I could appreciate the skill and craft those widgets displayed. He made me want to create my own. I envied Mr. Joffe.

So I personally expected him to walk away with the MacBook. And yet when the envelope came to me, I opened it and was quite surprised to see a different name. At first, I suspected foul play, bribery and nepotism. But then I remembered that these judges do it all by the book (spreadsheet actually). And so...the winner of the 2006 My Opera Widget Competition:

Grafio for the Artist's Sketchbook.

Grafio, please come down and claim your MacBook. If you want to say a few words, that's cool too.

I want to personally thank all our widget contributors, our winners and ThinkGeek, our official competition sponsor. So go visit them and buy lots of goodies. Everyone that is but Benjamin; he's already got everything they have. It's been a lot of fun, and don't forget that you can still win in our Widget World Cup. Stay tuned for more widget info, competitions and general mayhem.

Ben does it again

, , ,

I'm sure the title gives it away, but Benjamin Joffe has done the double. Congratulations! This time the competition was fierce and it came down to just a few points, but it still seems that he cannot be taken down.

The winning widget, Bounce, puts everyone into the World Cup spirit. You may not be Ronaldinho - in fact you probably aren't - but if you can bounce the football more than 40 times, who am I to judge? My personal record is 29, but I plan to spend a few more hours practicing...er, testing the widget.

So now we will send two prize packs from ThinkGeek to Ben in Australia. For this week, he receives:

1. GameCom Pro 1 USB Gaming Headset

2. USB Beverage Chiller

3. USB Mini Lava Lamp

We've got many more weeks to go, but so far Ben is undefeated. Is there no one who can challenge him? I suppose we will find that answer next week.

Good luck and happy coding!

Weekend Homework

, ,

It seems we have only one submitted widget for this week's ThinkGeek bag of awesomeness. That's no fun.

I know the man is keeping you down. I know the weekly grind has left you just waiting for that first (insert favorite beverage here). But think about releasing the stress by making a widget and getting a prize in return. Right now, if you submit, you've got a 50-50 chance of winning. Why not give it a shot?

ps - that was no pun

pps - even if it was, I would not admit it.

Widget Idol

, , ,

It's a fact: we want widgets. 500 of them to be precise. So tell your friends, lovers and enemies to get ready, cause we want to find the best widget and will go to great lengths to get it.

During the next three months, we're giving away a total of 13 prizes to the developers who create the most impressive widgets. Widgets that excite the imagination with fresh ideas. Widgets that show off cool features. Or widgets that are so much fun, you forget to shower.

Our friends at ThinkGeek are offering a grab bag of awesome toys and gadgets to the best widget each week. Just look at their site and tell me there aren't 10 things that would instantly make your life cooler. But we don't stop there, folks. We're giving away Nokia 770s - the portable Internet tablet - to the best widget for each month. And then...the Grand Prize awarded to the Widget Idol as voted on by our judges.

At The Gathering, we gave away the ultimate high performance computer built by the experts at Digital Impuls. That baby was a monster. For this competition we're giving away...

Wait! That surprise needs its own post.

So run through our tutorials, read the documentation and get coding. The first week's prize will be awarded on the 16th.

The Small Print

Criteria
We kept it the same as the Gathering. Our panel of expert judges will determine the winner based on the following:

Your widget should:
be very easy to use
have a well defined purpose
comply with standards
look good!

Your widget should not:
have bugs
waste resources
have ugly code

Each of these will be ranked from 0 to 100 (and 0 to -100 for the 'should not' list), and then added. The highest scoring widget each week will win that week's prize by ThinkGeek. The top scoring widget of the month will win the Nokia 770. The overall highest scoring widget will win the mysterious Grand Prize...

To enter
Simply upload a widget from http://my.opera.com/community/customize/widgets/submit/
if it gets posted on our 'New Widgets' Page withing a few days after submission it means that it has been judged, ranked, scored and entered in the competition

Deadline
Submission deadline for each week is Monday morning 10AM CET. The Widget of the Month will be the best widget submitted in the past four weeks.

More chances to win
You can update your widget and still win. If your widget didn't win the prize for its week, update your widget and send a mail to widgetcomp[at]opera.com telling us what you changed. Your widget will then be re-entered into the competition. Everyone has a chance to win. Everyone except Opera employees.

Disclaimer: Opera disclaims all liabilities and responsibilities regarding the widgets submitted as part of this competition. The participant agrees to bear all liabilities and responsibilites with regard to the widgets he/she submits as part of this competition. The authors retain copyright of submitted widgets, but widgets must either have a BSD-compatible license or be placed in the public domain. All judges' decisions remain final.

Opera Live at The Gathering (Part Deuce)

, , , ...

We have our little home setup here at The Gathering - a cozy little area with couches and some sweet demo machines (with PCs running widgets, presentations and a few cool devices). Chaotic sounds of thumping techno music and Counter Strike "Bomb defused" are all over - then here's our booth blaring Opera music.
We've had a lot of really bright and curious people come by interested in prizes, the Opera Browser, jobs at Opera, widgets, standards and just about anything else. Many of the people we've been talking to were the same that showed up to Chaals' presentation on Web standards.
Far away from the chaos downstairs, the auditorium was a nice break. Chaals was able to give his presentation on the importance of Web standards, his involvement with a number of organizations and how important accessibility is (and will continue to be) to the Web. He offered up a number of great examples of uses and even a few "far fetched" ones just to make sure everyone was paying attention. Afterwards, there were a bunch of questions covering a bunch of different topics. How long till it's released? Why does Opera do this?
And as abruptly as this nice little escape began, we're now back in our booth in the midst of this techno / Opera / videogame chaos. Technology is great, aint it?

The Gathering: Get your game face on

, , ,

We're looking for a few good widgets - and widget developers. In conjunction with The Gathering, Opera wants you - either in the My Opera community or onsite at The Gathering - to submit your best widget. The winner receives the ultimate in high performance gaming equipment from Digital Impuls, the leading performance-computer speciality store in Oslo, Norway.

The computer wizards at Digital Impuls worked their magic to create this system, with a retail value of almost $6,000. It's armed with AMD Athlon 64 X2 cpu 4800+, 2Gb of Mushkin XP extreme performance memory, nVidia Geforce 7900GTX graphics and two hard drives: a Western Digital Raptor 74GB and a Seagate 400GB Sata 2.

The system comes with the newly released 20 inch widescreen gaming display, 20WGX2 from NEC. Sound is delivered through the superb Logitech Z5500 5.1 surround sound system. The computer casing is 100% aluminium, supplied by the award-winning Lian Li. The system is powered through the extremely stable and powerful MIST 600W power supply.

But how to control it, you ask? We're also throwing in, courtesy of Logitech and Digital Impuls, a Logitech G15 gaming keyboard and a Logitech G5 laser mouse.

This is truly a machine to be reckoned with.

Now that you know what you can win, here's how you do it! It's easy:
  • Make your best widget. Don't worry, we've provided lots of documentation to help you along
  • Zip the widget and submit it to widgetcomp [at] opera.com
  • Give us your name, your phone number and let us know if you're at The Gathering
  • We will contact the winners and put up their widgets on this blog!

So what are you waiting for? Join the competition today! Work fast though, because the competition ends on Saturday at 4:00 PM CET.
