Calling All Widget Developers: Lend a hand to travelers everywhere

, ,

You've waited long enough! A new widget contest begins today!

Here are the details:

We are looking for the best new widgets that will be useful for travelers. Whether it's travel for work, vacation, or something in between, we want widgets that are great tools for anyone traveling out of town--whether by car, plane, boat, train, or other means of conveyance. From widgets that help you keep track of travel expenses to widgets that pull useful information from travel-related sites to whatever else you can think of, we'd love to see it. (In the coming months, you can look forward to even more themed widget competitions.)

As usual, we're giving away nice prizes to the winners...

Prizes:

Keeping in the spirit of Opera being everywhere, we're giving the grand prize winner a Windows Mobile phone that runs Opera, perfect for browsing the Web on the road. (We'll work with the winner to make sure he or she gets a phone that is appropriate to his or her region and service provider)

The second place winner will win a Nintendo DS Lite with the Opera browser for DS.

5 runner-ups will get Opera goodie bags with t-shirts, pins, stickers, etc.

Special Early Bird Prize:

Speedy developers who submit their widgets one week ahead of the final deadline will have a chance to win the early bird prize: another Nintendo DS Lite with the Opera browser for DS. We'll award that to the best widget submitted at least one week before the final deadline. Of course, the early bird winner will still be eligible to win the Grand Prize.

Judging:

After the submission deadline, our experts will judge the submitted widgets on quality, usefulness, and the number of times it is downloaded. So be sure to promote your widget to make sure it gets the downloads it deserves!

The winning widget (and other outstanding entries) will be publicized far and wide so it will be used by scores of grateful travelers.

To enter:

Simply upload a widget here: http://widgets.opera.com/upload/ and send me a private message telling me about it.

(Send private message to Lawmune)

If it gets posted on our New Widgets Page within a few days after submission, that means it has been entered into the competition.

Deadlines:

1. The early bird submission deadline is May 28th, midnight (your time).

On midnight of June 2nd, the judges will make note of how many times the submitted widgets have been downloaded, and the early bird winner will be announced on June 4th.

2. The regular submission deadline is June 4th, midnight (your time).

On midnight of June 9th, the judges will make note of how many times the submitted widgets have been downloaded, and the final winners will be announced on June 11th.

As a frequent traveler (for Opera), I'm really looking forward to the results!

Good luck!

Lets talk about love!Just a few days left to submit your travel widgets!

Ooh, interesting. How about using Yahoo! Maps API to create a local services mashup of some sort - showing local hotels, etc.

Or a route finder, or something?
RSS traffic / weather information mashup with maps api?
A way to explore destinations (flickr photos?)
Find airfares?
Get ratings and reviews for hotels?

Yahoo! Travel API

Have fun with those ideas.

Jadd 16. May 2007, 11:09

Hey coxy, do you think developing a Yahoo trip widget with their API would fall under the commercial restrictions in their usage policy?

johnnysaucepn 16. May 2007, 11:35

Jadd, unless you were selling advertising on the widget, or were restricting widget access to paying members, there shouldn't be a problem.

The rate limit for most Yahoo! services appear to be per IP address, so should be fine for a widget distributed across lots of IPs.

Lawmune 16. May 2007, 18:01

Some ideas:

1. In addition to commercial travel sites, also look at travel blogs and travel forums on the Web.

2. Take a look at sites with travel tips for other ideas.

3. Spend a day watching the Travel Channel on TV for inspiration

aditya.internet 26. May 2007, 21:52

A small question!!

The downloads for the regular entry will be counted from the regular submission dead line or from the date submited even before?

Lawmune 27. May 2007, 07:39

Along with other judging criteria, we will be counting total downloads, whether submitted early or for the regular deadline. The advantage of submitting early is that the widget developers have more time to promote their widgets, but the disadvantage is that they have less time to work on their widgets.

It's a tradeoff, and we're leaving it to the widget developers to decide on their own strategy.

zomg 27. May 2007, 14:15

How does submitting early mean having less time to work on the widget? I mean I've updated mine many times since the upload.

Don't tell me you take only the first version of the widget uploaded :|

johnnysaucepn 27. May 2007, 14:26

And updating it several times may mean that people download it multiple times as well, which is good for the stats!

On the other hand, a partially-complete or unpolished widget may put people off - will ratings be taken in account?

johnnysaucepn 28. May 2007, 01:43

Whew, it's late at night, but I got my entry posted:

watchtheRoad!

Remember to tell all your friends!

Jadd 29. May 2007, 07:41

My widget: Yahoo! trips, which is still in beta stage, as it only searches for already created trips at the moment. I'm going to be adding other Yahoo! services to it. Too bad this competition came right in the middle of exam season! :frown:

johnnysaucepn 29. May 2007, 12:26

Here's a question - will being posted on the front page of the site be compensated for when calculating download rates?

Not that I have any objection to competition widgets being on the front page - they all deserve it. But the download rate is always going to be higher.

Lawmune 29. May 2007, 17:06

There are many factors involved, and many tradeoffs to consider regarding when one submits, how polished the widget is, whether you let other developers see your widget before the final deadline, etc. Again, we leave the strategizing to you.

We will consider as many factors as we can (including user ratings) to make our determination of the winners, and we will indeed keep in mind that download rates will naturally vary based on site placement (which the judges have not influenced). In the end, it is a subjective evaluation considering as many factors as possible.

Because it was not clarified before, widgets submitted by the early deadline can be updated prior to the regular deadline, and it is the final version (prior to the regular deadline) that we will be judging in the regular (non-early bird) competition.

Hi all
This becomes interesting when the widget is run on a phone.
Travel information combined with information from the phone. Eg reading from the phone what GSM cell you are connected to will give u location (not precise like GPS, but the aria).

Say you come to a new place. Start the app and it shows you a map of the aria you are. Search for Hotel and it displays the hotels in the aria. Select a hotel and click call and your phone calls the hotel.

This is just a sample. My point is that it becomes interesting when it is possible to read and set information on the phone. Does anyone know what API will be available on the opera 9 for mobile phones ?

TerChris
