Opera Live at The Gathering
By Thomas Ford. Wednesday, 12. April 2006, 14:12:43
For all those wondering what exactly The Gathering is like, we'll be blogging live from the show. The gates opened at 9:00 AM at the Vikingskipet Olympic Arena. Its 4:00 PM right now, and people are still pouring in.
It seems computers aren't the only de rigeur accessory. Visitors drag with them easy chairs, enough food to last several days living at a computer, sleeping bags, caffeine pills to avoid the sleeping bags and at least one wooden cabinet. We tried to get a picture of this item, but the owner pulled a Carl Lewis and evaded our hawk-eyed paparazzi. You won this time, Betty Crocker. But we're on to you.
The people are all over the place, and by place I mean this place:

The Opera booth, showing the most bada$$ grand prize at The Gathering, is on the left side. Come swing by and say hello.

Here are two of our Web Applications team members doing what they do best...get back to work!

Competition Notes:
The competition has been on for exactly two days and we have exactly one entry! Great work pbjorge12, you are the first one!
While the rest of you are hard at work on your widgets, keep an eye on the time. Submit as many as you like - but be sure to submit it before 4:00pm CET Saturday 15th April

I'll let my idea in to the air though... I thought I'd parse the iTunes XML for a recently played list and that'd send it to a server script (http://example.com/create_feed.php, etc.) to create a feed out of that. The feed could then be used on the Opera Community or any site, for that matter
The above approach could also work with music phones with Opera Platform... keeping your site up-to-date on the songs you're listening on the road. Useless? Sure. Neat? Yes. On the Nintendo DS you could think highscore syncing, etc.
EDIT: I just realized the sheer size of the iTunes generated XML could be a problem... Mine weighs in at a whopping 2.3M
Any chance of you pulling something like this at Assembly in the future?

Real coders don't need a copper, blitter and paula. Just kidding.
Let's get back to the widgets.

I think its important for me to mention that since Opera 9 is still under development, the latest build for each platform may not be the best to use for widgets. You may use any of the weekly builds to make your widget - but please do mention which build you used for it.
We will judge your widget using the build you want us to test it with:)
ps. the Judges decision is still final and binding.
