Few days ago I asked a hardcore Firefox fan : "Why do you insist on not using any other browser?" His answer: "Because it is not open source!" . Made me think... SO WHAT? Does a program have to be open source to be good for people seeking alternatives to Microsoft products ? So today I am starting a survey among my friends: "Why do you prefer Firefox above all other browsers?" . But I have this feeling that 3/4 of them will say: "Open source..." .
The idea of messing with the code, to see what makes things work (even thought most do not know what they are looking at (i have just started to understand few things but on not so complicated (as source) programs)) makes them think that they are part of something (I guess ?) .
Do not get me wrong, I love free software! But that does not mean that all free is good... I do not like Firefox that much actually. I really prefer Google Chrome (updating from nightly builds). Why chrome ? Because it is light and fast, but I cannot find it as a serious browser and I do not why. Maybe because I cannot use it for anything else than just open a page ?
But it is not only about the browsers... See OpenOffice - great program! See Blender - amazing program! See Media Player Classic Home Cinema or VideoLAN - great programs BUT they just cannot do what KMPlayer or PotPlayer can do... Difference ? VLC and MPC-HC are open source, thus getting great attention... Visit Doom9 PotPlayer forum topic and you'll see what a single developer can do (even though we, the English (even if non-native) speakers have to wait for the unofficial translations of the updates). I have to admit - MPC HC and VLC work but when it comes to some custom settings they fail I'd love to use VLC but the video quality is not that good. I'd love to use MPC-HC as main video player but it is completely non-customizable! If you read most forums you will see one thing :
MPC- HC + FFDShow = all you need.
No! I need more! Many need more! Plus I do not think that FFDShow give the best quality (personal opinion).
Probably it is just me rambling about my own visions of hardcore open source programs/fans and etc but I do believe there is room for all software and one should not just ignore all that do not fit their own visions of the "open source future".
In the end I must say that I am a fan of what software suit my needs, that is all. Commercial, freeware, open source ... It does not matter...
p.s.: opened for opinions on this one
p.p.s.: how do you keep paragraphs 1 tab away from left border ? Align right is not what I need
