Is there such a thing as "speaking Chinese". In Bejing they speak Mandarin; in Hong Kong they speak Cantonese. I am told by Chinese friends that, although Mandarin-speakers and Cantonese-speakers can't understand each other, they can read each other's writing because the characters are so similar.

You are right, Mandarin is very different than Cantonese... I understood that Mandarin was the most used one and the one most of foreigners were learning so I think that is the want I want to go for. About the writing, I think they are similar but then, you get the problem between learning traditional or simplified chinese...as if it wasnt hard enough already

Mandarin Chinese will be the most important language in te world. It has a chance to be more important than english in daily international communication.
