I am not a gift...I am a surprise :)

Falling in love is easy but staying in love is something very special

The fortress city,Vyborg

, ,

Celebrating the Valentine's day we went to Finland by car.Our way passed through one very interesting Russian city Vyborg.I want to show you this city.
Vyborg is a very nice city not far from Snt.Petersburg.
Here is a symbol of Vyborg, but not Volkswagen …lol

The city was built by Sweden in the XIII century.
It is a city or narrow and climbing up and down roads…

It is a city of ancient towers with clocks that work and show correct time…

The city of churches, white as snow…

Tower of a town hall…

round tower…it is a restaurant inside it now…

There are a lot of beautiful buildings along the streets, everyone differes from another.

The bridge over Vuoksi River…here we founded a new traditions to place the lock on the bridge when you marry with names written on it.
I saw pictures of such bridges from other country. It was covered all with locks!
Government did not allow to put any more ,because they were afraid that the bridge will fall down under their weight.
Here are not so many of locks…but it is only the beginning

The main beauty of the city is the fortress!

Now it is covered with snow, but you can see the huge stones it was made from.

It is very beautiful!

If you reach underground-you can find wonderful things there-stalagmites,that grow on the flow and made from ice, pure as glass…
They look like statues…a creatures of nature…

The view of fortress in the evening

We have wonderful tradition.
Here you can see knightly tournament every year!

Here is a view of the city from the top of the tower of the fortress.
Very charming view, full of colors among winter white and black canvas.
When you are tired to walk along streets and want to dream in one the most beautiful parks-
You may go to Monrepo.
It is covered with snow now.In Summer it is more beautiful.

Water is alive and rocks seem more high than now.

A charming small castle on the top of the rock

A real wonder of frozen waterfalls

And the nice sunset in the forest

If you are cold after walking among snow rocks you are welcome to a lot of cafe in the town.
They work all night long and have very good interior and delicious food

And here is a bit about its history for those who want to read more

Vyborg is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, 120 km north-east of St. Petersburg.
Vyborg is known as one of the largest historical towns in Russia. The history of the town began with the construction of a castle in 1293 by Swedish, when they conquered Karelia Isthmus. In the year of 1403 Vyborg got official status of a town.
Castle of middlecentury construction and engineering fortifications defined the town as town-fortress.
Later Vyborg developed into a center of trade between the Novgorod merchants and Karelian hunters.

In the beginning of 18 century during the war actions of tsar Peter the 1 against Swedish soldiers Vyborg was joined to Russia.
It was developing as the center of commerce simultaneously with St. Petersburg.
The town developed as a forpost of Russia in the north-west part of the country, charged by famous generals Alexander Suvorov and Michail Kutusov. In the beginning of 19 century Finland, including Vyborg region was joined to Russia.
Vyborg started to be known as a sea-port and industrial and trading centre.

Nowadays Vyborg is an industrial and cultural center, the international harbor and an important railway and highway point. The Helsinki - Moscow highway passes through the city. The historical core of the town is formed by the castle and adjacent buildings.

Everybody, who has ever been here, keeps in the memory its majestic, unforgetable style, its quiet streets, wonder of various historical monuments. In Vyborg you can definetly feel touch of following each other historical ages, national cultures of swedish, finnish and russian people.
Foreign visitors are to be seen here at any time of the year. The city is visited each year by over 600.000 tourists from abroad. The people of Vyborg are tirelessly enhancing their cities appearance.
Old Vyborg is being carefully preserved and restored white the new Vyborg is constantly expanding its boundaries.

So clever fishing bird!!!!!Tiger,or a new attempt of painting in pencil

steven 17. February 2009, 20:52

....i know so much ab the history of this city (look ww2) but i would say only that
This city should not belong to russia....well, this is history
the best Yulia !!

Yulia 17. February 2009, 21:47

Steven,Finland was better not to take part in this war. They lost a lot during this war.It was their huge mistake,They thougt that Germany will help them to fight with Russia and that will have more lands...they were mistaken. If you know the history-you know what happened. Now my country house is in the place where before was Finland. 70 km from my city.I feel pity for Finland, but histary is histary. And we are good friends with Finland now.
PS Finland had a lot of other territoris instead of lost, and even much mor than it has.
And if to speak about whom this city must belong-it must be Sweden!

steven 18. February 2009, 06:00

propaganda Yulia, dear, mine died in that war ww2...in east and west
Stalin attacked, with no reason both Finland and Romania, besides he did the same when Poland was in difficulty and fought on the west front with Germany. Besides it(Russia) didn't learn the lesson---> its troops are still occupying exactly the east-Romanian region (R Moldova)
Its western border is at 1000 km east of Romania (and Moldova)
Why is it not quitting Moldova ???
Believe me, this is a costly policy !!
After all: why does it need more land, it already is the biggest country on Earth ?? (What is it doing in Georgia ?)
But, stay cool, we are on Opera, and understand my point: russians are Ok, but Russia's external policy is awful !

Yulia 18. February 2009, 07:05

Steven,my dear
Everyone who starts war must be punished. The same about Geoorgia. They were too brave to start it hoping for the help of USA. I am not fond of politic, but here my opinion is the same. Why you always forget the beginner of the war?
Here is an anecdote for you
The rabit and the crow were on board the aircraft.Suddenly the crow started to damage the it.
-What are you doing?-asked the rabit.
-show off!he answered.
Rabit stared to damage all too,he wanted to show off as a crow.
The aircraft stared to fall down. The crow jumpt out of the aircraft and opened his wings and fly...
"Oh..."shouted the rabit,"what will I do? I have no wings!"
-If you have no wings you should not show off"- answered the crow and flied away...
Have a nice day,my dear friend. Best wishes from russian girl and from Russia.

Russia had two wars with Finland : Winter war and the Second world war. Winter war was provoked by Stalin- everyone knows it.He made it in order to remove border with the enemy (Finland) further from Petersburg. If it has not been made it, guns of fascists would shoot on the center of Petersburg... In this war Russia lost 10 times more soldiers than Finland!!! In " the Second world war " Finland has declared war to Russia. It is a historic fact.Russia won this war with fascists.
And you must not forget that it was Russia who cleared the Europe from fascics....Ruminia is among those countries too.

steven 18. February 2009, 08:07

:D why wasn't Leningrad occupied by the "fascists" ???
Bc Finland has stopped after taking back its own land, so the town was NEVER bombed from the N-W (from Finland), and Germany was not allowed by Finland to attack the town from the N
Russia has lost 10 times more soldiers ?...may be, but you know that Stalin had previously EXECUTED most of the military commanders of the Red Army
But how come are you the biggest country on Earth ??
By killing millions persons of other nations, and taking their lands
Don't talk about fascist killers, your communism has come like the Christianity in today Latin America: by exterminating the opponents, in this case massive murders in East-Europe
..and then what ?? YOU have discovered that capitalism is better !!
So many dead FOR NOTHING ???????????

Tigralas 18. February 2009, 08:50

This post is about wonderful city Vyborg. If you want to discuss crAzy Russia, you can make your own post and we'll speak there more. It seems that you have no enough information and it will be interesting for you to know more.

Yulia 18. February 2009, 19:53

Dr. John v. Kampen 19. February 2009, 20:58

Great pictures! Let us not look back at histories. Let us look to the future in a positive way. Whether people live in Rumania, Russia, Finland or Georgia, to name but few, is not significant. All want to live in peace and social stability. That's a process taking its time. Let us deal with our own local situation and improve that before we attempt to assess peculiar geo-political dealings of some 'blocks'.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMmLkNw--JE Or listen ->carefully<- to Zbigniew Brzezinski, an often very misunderstood expert in foreign politics. He indeed makes a few very good points! :coffee:

Yulia 19. February 2009, 21:12

Such a clever words!!!!!!!I am agree with you.We must look to the future, but must remember our past. People without past will not have future.
But we all hope for the better future. And I wish all the best to all.
:coffee: ,, wine ...chose what you want

Dr. John v. Kampen 19. February 2009, 21:21

wine Do you have any good Russian wines? Thanks! I agree with you, Yulia. Of course we must remember our histories, but no longer 're-live' them. I am Dutch and my father was nearly killed by a German razzia in WWII, yet I am married with a German woman. We as simple 'people' can do so much, make contacts with eachother, make friendship, teach to and learn from eachother. There is so much good to share. See here in these forums! Aren't we writing 'history' as well? flirt

Yulia 19. February 2009, 21:28

Sure  We are writing history by our lifes
Pity...but we have no good wine in Russia. It is too cold for it.
I prefer french wine
And you are welcome here.I have alo to show you. And in your history will appear new pages

Dr. John v. Kampen 19. February 2009, 22:09

I'll bear that in mind. Thank you!
