Obituary : Anastasia Baburova

After the death of Lasantha Wickramatunga in Sri Lanka, there was another journalist's death in Russia on January 19th. Killing unsatisfactory journalists with guns on daytime is not only in Sri Lanka. Only bad governments control speech. Anastasia Baburova, Russia female journalist, and Stanislav Markelov, human rights lawyer, were assassinated in the place within 30 minutes from the Kremlin on daytime. She investigated activities of neo-Nazi groups and her age was only 25. The next day, a party of Russian nationalists brought champagne to the murder scene to celebrate the “elimination” of their enemies. How shameful ! :frown:

You can read her poem when she was 15 in the last Obituary on Economist.

Wake up in the morning
Stretch your arms towards the sun
Say something in Chinese
And go to Paris…
Every minute, somewhere in the world there is morning
Somewhere, people stretch their arms towards the sun
They speak new languages, fly from Cairo to Warsaw
They smile and drink coffee together.

Rational journalists are in danger in both countries, Russia and Sri Lanka.

Um-chin-a (Korean Slang)

, ,

Um-chin-a is one of the most famous Korean slangs between young people. It is the abbreviation of Uma-chingu-adul which directly means 'a son of a friend of my mother'. However, Its actual meaning is an imaginary man who is always perfect and flawless. It is sometimes used sarcastically. When somebody got a perfect grades in school, you can say 'he was turned out Um-chin-a ! Homer: Doh! '

Why does 'a son of a friend of my mother' have such a meaning? Many Korean married women always compare other sons with her son. They always meet in groups and compare their son's ability. If someone's son has some inferiority, she scold her son like this : 'A son of my friend got a perfect score. What did you during the last vacation?' or 'A son of my friend won a prize. What are you doing now?' ... etc.

So many young people agree and sympathize the term 'Um-chin-a', and young people enjoy such a sarcastical using this term.
Koreans can often see using this term, like this webtoon(web cartoon) :

Sulkyunsel(슬견설) - A discourse about louse and dog

,

Sulkyunsel is a very famous essay in Korea. The title "Sulkyunsel(슬견설)" means "A discourse about louse and dog". The writer, Kyubo Lee(이규보, 1168-1241) lived in Goguryeo Dynasty which is the ancient kingdom of Korea.

I tried translating this essay :

----------------Translated Sulkyunsel-------------

One guest came to me and said

"I saw a horrible scene yesterday. A bad guy was hitting a dog with a bat, and it was so cruel that I was greatly sorrowful. Therefore, I swared I would never eat any meat of pig or dog."

After that, I answered

"A bad guy was catching and burning lice with a brazier, and it was so cruel that I was greatly sorrowful. Therefore, I swore I would never catch or kill any lice"

Then, the guest was disappointed and said angrily,

"Lice is worthless life, isn't it? I saw a big dying animal and felt sorrow, but you answered with lice. You are kidding me."

Hence, I think I had to explain my opinion.

"Of course, no creatures with vitality and blood wants to die including cattle, horse, swine, sheep, bug, ant and so on. It is not true that big ones want to live and small ones want to die. Therefore, there is no difference between the death of dog and louse. Therefore, I didn't intend to ridicule you but answered like that using this comparison. Bite all of your ten fingers. Do you feel pain only from thumb and nothing from others? All of these are parts of one body and each has its own skin and muscle. Hence, these pains are equal. As a life with vitality and vigor, how can it be possible that someone wants to die and other wants to live? Go back and think deeply. When you regard tentacles of snail as horns of bull and small birds as great phoenixes, I will be willing to talk about Tao with you."
