September 19, 2008
This is male trumpeter swan is protecting his mate while she sits on their nest. There was a juvenile swan, apparently a bit too close to the nest and this male was having none of it! Each time the juvenile would try to swim out far enough on the lake to have room to get air born, the resident male would chase the juvenile back to the shore. It all worked out in the end. Four cygnets hatched, but only one has survived to date.

How to vote? This is the link of National_Geographic then clic in "Voting Machine" then clic in September wek 3 and them you have to start to rate any photo and them you will see Lvee's photo!:smile:

Azores, São Miguel island, Furnas lake - Portugal!
I was there during 15 days some years ago!

People from Azores are very frendly! if you are a tourist and you like to trevel by hitchhiking, this is the right place to do it! All the Azorean stop to help you!

This is a great place to rest, if you don't like camping you will find a 5 stars Hotel!

But you will loose good things in the lake all day long!

Furnas is a stratovolcano with two calderas which date back
to approximately 30,000 years ago. The second approximately dates back to 20,000 years ago. The volcanoes are very active with 10 sub-Plinian eruptions occurring in the past 5,000 years. Two of them are historically known. The first known eruption was in 1440 in which the first colonists settled the island. The second was in 1630 and caused 200 deaths. The volcano was intensely studied between 1990 and 2000 and many formerly unknown geological risks come to light.

The western of the two calderas is partially filled by a crater lake, Lagoa das Furnas, at an elevation of 359 m (1,181 ft). Fumaroles and mud sands are located at the northern part of the lake.

Furnas is also famous for its springs and geysers. In the village, the area around Furnas has thirty springs, each of which has a different temperature and chemical composition. There is a hot river which is colored by iron and a cold river which flows through the village. The geysers are situated in several basins which produce water that is rich in sodium bicarbonate, boron, fluorine and traces of carbon dioxide. The local inhabitants cook corn-type dishes in the geysers. The installations of hydrotherapy are in the park and were built in the 19th century.

You are very welcome!

Galo de Barcelos. "A lenda"

Legend of "Galo de Barcelos"

A murder had been committed in the Portuguese town of Barcelos. Who was the criminal? Some stated that on the day of the crime, a Galician was passing through Barcelos on a pilgrimage and various circumstances pointed to his guilt.
The Spaniard declared his innocence but he could present no proof.
He was arrested and then condemned to be hanged. The poor man continued to plead his innocence to no avail. As a last request he asked to be brought before the judge again. The judge was dining with some friends and before them all the man again declared his innocence. "There is nothing I can do" replied the judge.
There was a roasted chicken in the table.
The Spaniard, seeing himself abandoned by man, turned to the Saints of his faith. He cried: "As surely as I stand innocent, so will that rooster crow! " Everyone laughed. The feast continued and the man was taken back to prison, but the judge decided that the Rooster would not touched. Evening fell and the words of the man still rang in their ears.
By the time the man was to be hanged, the judge was in his house. Suddenly, to the amazement of everybody, the roasted rooster transformed and...... crowed!
The judge and several other man rushed to prevent the Spaniard from being hanged, and they arrived just in time.
The man was released and left the town.
It is said that, years later, the man returned to Barcelos and erected a small monument that can still be seen today, as a way to thank the Saints that had helped him.
The "Galo de Barcelos", seen in the above picture, became a symbol to the town of Barcelos and is nowadays considered to be one of the typical symbols of Portugal.
Barcelos is a city about 30 Kilometers from Braga.
