12888m3, 100 million USD, IHC
On 15 November 2000 IHC Holland and CHEC/the Shanghai Waterway Bureau signed a building contract for delivery of a 12,000m3 trailing suction hopper dredger in exactly two years’ time. In the early stages of building it was, for spiritual reasons, decided that the hoppers size should be extended to 12,888m3. The more digits eight are involved, the happier the ship will sail, or so Chinese conviction has it. This generated quite some extra engineering for the already completed design. The enlarged hopper gives a total load capacity of 18,978 tones. With suction tubes extendable to 35m and 45m, the vessel is designed for maintenance dredging in the mighty river Yangtze and its approaches, as well as for reclamation jobs. The vessels maiden job actually involves san winning for Shanghais new coastal container terminal. XIN HAI LONG’s facts and figures, as well as the very special party thrown at her launch and naming ceremony by HRH Princess Margriet, are broadly described in P&D 158. What could not be described then because we didn’t know yet, is that the young dragon dredges like a hungry Hippo, filling its 12,888m3 hopper with sand within an hour. That was on acceptance trials in Dutch waters. After further trials in home waters, the vessel was delivered on 28 November 2002 in a grand ceremony.

oil, lubricating, TD-SCDMA, 3G
The ship will get on the shipside of this port whose channel-dredging project had been carried on by us for a long time. We must leave out to conduct our work after we finish loading the lubricating oil on board in about 2 hours. We are disappointed about this arrangement made by the port, for they changed the plan prepared formerly under which we could enjoy a 2-nights’ free time on the land. All that we can do is to accept this and say goodbye to our big illusion.
This is not the only bad news for us. After we received that stupid plan from the VHF radiophone, we found that we cannot find captain’s name in the name list of the login window in the Remote Attendance Control System. This is a serious problem that we can’t upload the crewmember’s attendance statistics without captain’s authorization, which is based on the successful login of the system. I tried to reinstall this software and recovered the backup of the MDB file, which is essential that stores all the statistics of our attendance. The company in Shanghai collects the data of the system and gives us the proper salaries on demand. All what I have done have finally resulted with no effect. It is always a hard-to use and easy-to-collapse environment, I don’t think I can fix it easily. So I sent an email with a detailed report to the HR department to seek for on demand support, which is hold by my friend Chen. God bless him!
An episode between these is that our wireless network have been stopped working for almost 14 hours, it’s unusual considering our position and the weather. In my opinion, this is because of the running out of the money paid to the wireless network provider China Unicom. We give them the cash in advance to get the wireless service, and then they can enjoy the interest of them in the bank and stop the poor service (unstable, exceed to 10 kB/s) immediately if the found no money has left in our account. What a excellent business!
China will hold the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and it seems that China Mobile has begun to setup its 3rd Generation TD-SCDMA wireless network, which can provide us with a maximum 35M/s speed non-stopping wireless network. May God bless them!

syndrome, Sleep
I have been given up taking an afternoon nap for some days, it seems that 6 hours’ sleep is still OK to me. Since I have to get up at 6:20 am everyday to fill in the forms for reporting the production statistics the day before, I always go to bed around 12 o’clock at night, which is fairly early for me. In those campus times, I had cultivated a habit of having a little break at noon, which had gradually changed into a much longer sleep in the afternoon. I had a lot of spare time them recently, which had proved to be the source of my last-too-long sleeping. It really made me sad that God had given me so much time to promote myself, which had been taken to lead a sound sleep in the bed. It was ridiculous that I didn’t even have a comfortable sleep then, for I suffered a sudden suffocation sometimes when I take sleep for too long a time. Maybe this is called “Sleep too much syndrome”. When this happened for the 3rd time, I finally realized that it was the just time to give up the crazy noon break. It’s awful anyway to die in the bed just because of sleeping too much.

hopper, dredger, trailing, computer
...
It’s weird when I suddenly found myself in the trailing suction hopper dredger’s meeting room waiting for the sailors to teach the basic computer knowledge, without any nerves or excitement, I was just standing beneath the blackboard hanging in the wall and thinking about the near coming course calmly. Maybe I was worried about the possibly absence of the crew, praying at least one person would come to take the course. My worries had finally been proved to be a indulge in fantasy. There are total 44 crew and officers here in the ship, 13 of them had taken part in my course on time, although I had told them that this would be a very very basic computer train. In addition, another 9 crewmates asked me later to do give them the same class at twelve-noon tomorrow. Considering that there are 11 crewmen had been home for a scheduled break or rotate days off and rest of 33 people works three shifts a day, it is large in quantity.
After recalling the photos taken by our charitable chief engineer, who had been a teacher for almost 20 years on land, I became gratified with my efforts lasted for the whole week. A total 10 hours preparation and one hour non-stopping teaching is worth that. In fact, all those who have time have come here (except the one who is still sleeping to make up of the poor sleep) regardless of their age and position. Our lovely old chief officer who had been re-employed as a substitute officer which is necessary in this kind of ship said, “It’s for you to prepare for this extracurricular course, but as I have been so old, what I want to get from this participation is some practical operation to work out a bit of printed nice looking documents in the A4 paper.” I accepted his suggestion and tried to explain why I had to teach them CPU, mouse and even the use of Caps Lock in the keyboard, for the reason I told them those in a few minutes is want them to know how magic the computer world is. He appreciated my work and expressed firmly the willing to join the next course some days later, but I didn’t even know what I should talk with them where and when. The younger sailor hired from the poor region of this country told me that what I have done is perfect, “It is really a good opportunity for us who comes from the rural area of China to improve the computer techniques and I think I have got some, but you have been keeping talking to us for more than one hour, please do give me some time to ask a tiny question!”, he said sincerely and frankly.
Gong, who has facilitated the whole thing by encourage me to try to be a teacher, said: “I was sleeping then, how dare you leave me to carry out this, you must teach me alone!” he said.
I’m not a qualified and well experienced teacher, but my parents were once in the early 1980s in the village school of my hometown where they got in touch with each other for the first time. I always respect teacher, and all the Chinese do for more than 2800 years.

dredge, english, learning, self-indulgent
I’m now in the radio room of the dredger which has a 4500m3 mud cabin in the middle listening to the 17760kHz BBC World service, Despairingly hoping that I would understand more, although I can hardly understand the interview it broadcasts. In order to keep pace with the BBC news, I must insist in watching news hour of CCTV-4 every single morning for it gives me the latest world news in my native language: Chinese. It is already a great improvement to my English studying process.
As a jackaroo dredging engineer of this Dredging Company, I must do everything after my first step into the ship, which cannot be easy to a undergraduate of a prestigious university in Shanghai some times ago. I had accepted this work as a spur to my current poor situation being resulted by my self-indulgent tertiary campus living lifestyle.
It’s traditionally believed that sailor is the most poor people in China, for any tiny maritime peril would possibly lead to some deaths of the mariner whose remains will never be carried home, that means he has no chance to accept his descendants’ offering of sacrifices in reverence, it’s big.
