向前,历史的三峡 - The Surpass Era

,

took this in a noon break, and I was just feeling, in my specialized view, not magnificent, but very very dangerous, like the current China.

Stunning development? yes, of course, if you had ever seen how the Chinese deal with the work. but this develop is also quite fragile, any little crash would bury this.

I can only pray for this ooooold, but still young nation.

Hope, China, my motherland, can surpass her "Doomed Three Gorges" with ease: nobody would fall into the water, and, most important of all, No Ship crash!

你好 ye !
I would be interested to know why does this article consider the Three Gorges as doomed ?
Is it a picture taken not far from the dam ?
Some members of my family did a trip to China this month and I know they travelled to the Three Gorges Dam. It seems that this place became one of the most turistic places to visit in China.
Cheers,
Liu

Hi Liu, how these days?

Nice voice from you. This month your family members will go to that Dam? Good news! I even didn't get there, I just went to the reservoir once in a time. That should be a magnificent mega project! I should have been there to build it if I chose that company 3 years ago. Hope nice memories they get!

Sorry for my lazy, I didn't express what I thought in detail. Now I will try to explain.

The "three gorges" here means neither the real three gorges, nor the dam, although I'm not so optimistic about that huge megastructure.

An overseas respectful Chinese historian/writer, called Tang Degang, once expressed the "doomed three gorges" concept in his book "Seventy Years of the Late Qing Dynasty 1840-1910" long time ago, doom here means destined.

He told us that this nation is too old, if she want to pass through the "modern river" made of historical difficulties from the old Empire State, to become a respected modern super power like old days, she will probably have to face the most difficult river reach: The Three Gorges.

The Three Gorges in my hometown means the narrowest reach of Yangtze river when it becomes really important from the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau. The dummies would think it is the most easy place to cross over this river in the map. In fact, this is one of the reason to be adopted to be the dam site. However, this reach has very swift current and many submerged reefs. It is the most dangerous place among this river. Anyone who want to cross over this river must be very very careful, or the boat who fell into the water, like Titanic.

He used this word to express the difficulties and easy illusion China will have to face when she tries to step into a modern country. The current China cannot to be considered as a modern country at all: it's rural areas are still like India, although some super cities may like Tokyo or New York seen from some certain perspectives. There are too much illusions in China, sometimes people got cheated by themselves.

This figure of speech has nothing to do with the dam, neither the picture I posted. In fact, this picture was taken by my mobile phone in Huangpu river, Shanghai. I was just at a noon break in office then.

Why I post this picture here? Because Huangpu river is not a well dredged and channelized river like Rhone or Mississipi, big cruises in this river must be carefully piloted by a pilot boat once in a time. It is too narrow! But here you can see two cruises, any little unexpected problem would resulted in a disaster in the heart of Shanghai. You can see a BBC documentary called "Mega-structures: The Yangshan Port", the Huangpu river problem was seriously discussed in it.

Why I use the surpass era? two reason, one is that China is trying to surpass the obstacles to be a great nation in the next 30 years with applauses and ironies, which is also the retire years of mine; the other one is that China have to cross over the modern river after 200 years from 1840, whether success or not.

China will get through this 200-year-long doomed historical three gorges in Mr Tang's prophecy, or I will have to flee to the French Polynesia. Your country also cost many time to find the modern values, and many people got exiled in some islands, right?

Hope my explain helps, sometimes I just write the feelings and won't consider the reader, sorry.

Best Regards
Yves
