Beijing 2.0

, ,

Super fun trip in China doing super fun things. Amongst them university tour, web standards meetup, Opera user meetup and karaoke session!

We talked to more than two thousand students, introducing Opera and web standards to them. Many of them are very enthusiastic, joining the Q&A. We also initiated what probably is the first web standards gathering in Beijing's WuDaoKou area (五道口), thanks especially to CS.

Others include Opera user meetup, Opera internal web standards discussion. Oh yea, there are "five million bicycle in Beijing" and Opera added a couple more. It was a fun-filled afternoon where Opera geeks bike around the city. A cyclist identified us and rode alongside me discussing Opera features.

Learned loads from Henny and spread Web Standards love. Joined Thruth, QingCheng, JiaBin and BenYang traveling different cities. Dragging Henrik back to the hotel after a great night in Guang Zhou. XiangShan and DaTong outing with Michal, and discussing chinese cultural complexities with him while bar-hopping in HouHai. Duet with Song Lin in Karaoke(I am the spoiler in the duet of course), acting like a bunch of kids during He Jia’s birthday by throwing toothpick sticks at each other.

My first week

This is my third day in Opera. The whole environment is awesome, it really lives up to the hype that it's a great place to work in. I've been introduced to a very helpful and resourceful mentor Frode, and I've managed to meet with some really interesting colleagues.

Since the first day I didn't have a laptop, I get to play with Frode's UMPC for a day. The gadget was uber cool, though I still can't get myself to write fast enough with the stylus. The reason I get to play with UMPC was for another merrier reason, I'll be getting a new Macbook. Cheers, cheers! with 10.5 installed. I've always wanted to play with OS X 10.5, but failed to. I remember how Eneas and I used to talked so much about the great features but I still never got my hands dirty. I feel guilty! Now I finally have the chance to do it!

Another great thing about opera is the food. Well, for a person that eats incessantly, it's great to know that food is always around the cornder. After a great meal, I,ll get to drink my wonderful coffee in this lovely opera cup. The first image that conjured in my mind when I saw the cup was that it was like a google's equivalent of coffee cup - a symbol of an uber nice working environment.
