Two weeks ago, I discussed the meaning of the team names in the National Basketball Association"s Eastern Conference. This week we move on to the Western Conference.
TheMemphisGrizzlies: Giant "grizzly bears" range the Rocky Mountains in the US and Canada. They do not live anywhere near the city of Memphis, which is on the Mississippi. Then why the name "Grizzlies"? The reason is that the Grizzlies were originally based in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Canada"s Pacific coast, where grizzly bears do live.
TheMinnesotaTimberwolves: Minnesota, like Memphis, takes its team name from wildlife, but the Timberwolves" name actually makes sense. Minnesota, which is located on the border with Canada, contains large expanses of forested wilderness where timberwolves make their home.
TheSanAntonioSpurs: The mythology of the "cowboy", solitary, tough and self-reliant, has long been an important part of the American national identity, particularly in Texas, where San Antonio is located. While the average Texan today is far more likely to work in an office than on a horse, the cowboy remains an important cultural symbol in Texas. Spurs are sharp metal devices attached to a cowboy"s boots. By jabbing a horse"s flanks with the spurs, the cowboy can encourage his mount to run faster. The Spurs" team logo includes a picture of a spur.
TheDallasMavericks: The name of the Dallas team also reflects Texas" cowboy past. A "maverick" is a rebellious person who refuses to obey social norms. The word is derived from the name of Samuel Maverick (1803-1870), a Texas rancher who refused to brand his cattle.
TheHoustonRockets: The NASA Mission Control Center is located in Houston; hence the name "Rockets". Ironically, no actual rockets are ever launched into space from Houston -- launches take place at a separate facility in Florida.
TheUtahJazz: Jazz is a uniquely American musical style invented by African-Americans in the South. Utah is a deeply conservative Rocky Mountain state with few African-Americans and no connection to jazz music. The reason for the name? The team started in New Orleans, one of the birthplaces of jazz, and subsequently moved to Utah.
TheDenverNuggets: The city of Denver, Colorado, arose during a gold rush in 1859. Searching for nuggets of gold and silver was important in a Rocky Mountain state where even today mining plays a significant role in the economy.
TheLosAngelesLakers: A look at a map of the Los Angeles area shows that there are virtually no lakes in the metropolitan area. Why then the name "Lakers"? The name only makes sense if you know where the team was originally located -- Minneapolis, Minnesota. Minnesota is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes" thanks to the abundance of small lakes within its boundaries. Minnesota is also on the world"s largest freshwater lake, Lake Superior.
The Lakers" move from Minneapolis to Los Angeles parallels a general demographic trend in America over the last several decades: the nation"s South and West have boomed, while the population in the North has grown relatively slowly. In fact, all of California"s NBA teams (the Lakers, the Clippers, the Warriors and the Kings) originally played in Northern cities and then moved to California.
ThePortlandTrailblazers: During the 1800s, the United States expanded westward to the Pacific. As the pioneers traveled west, they blazed trails for others to follow. One of the most famous of these trails was the Oregon Trail, which led from the state of Missouri in the center of the country to the state of Oregon in its northwestern corner. Today Portland is the largest city in the state of Oregon. The name of its NBA team honors the pioneers who traveled on the Oregon Trail.
TheSeattleSupersonics: As a result of its association with Boeing, Seattle has long been a center of the airplane manufacturing industry. Although Boeing recently moved its corporate headquarters from Seattle to Chicago, it maintains a large manufacturing presence in Washington State. The Boeing 747 and other jetliners are built in Seattle. The name "Supersonics" honors Seattle"s contribution to the jet age.
TheLosAngelesClippers: During the mid-1800s, fast sailing ships known as clippers transported goods and passengers across the oceans. Before the building of transcontinental railroads, California too relied on such ships for much of its trade. The clipper ship era ended with the advent of steamships, but their memory lives on in the name of one of Los Angeles" two NBA teams. The Clippers first acquired the name when they played in the oceanside city of San Diego. The team later moved up the coast a bit to LA, but kept the name.
ThePhoenixSuns: The natural environment of Phoenix is a torrid desert. For its existence as a big city, Phoenix depends on the air conditioner and imported water. The team"s name recognizes Phoenix"s hot, sunny climate.

Youth is not a time of life;
it is a state of mind;
it is not a matter of pink cheeks, red lips and flexible knees;
it is a matter of will, a quality of imagination, a vigor of the emotion;
it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a dispositional control of courage over cowardice,
of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease.
This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20.
Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin,
but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Worry, fear, selfdistrust bows the heart
and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16,
there is in every human being's heart the looking forward to wonder,
the endless childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living.
In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station:
so long as it is receiving messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from God,
you are young.
When the aerials are down,
and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism,
then you are grown old, even at 20,
but as long as your aerials are up to catch waves of optimism,
there is hope you may die young at 80.

The Great Wall of China is considered to be the only man-made project visible from the moon. Although it was once thought to have been built entirely during the Qin Dynasty between 221 and 208 BC, it is now believed to have been started earlier. The 15-foot-high, 25-foot-wide, 1,500-mile-long structure was undoubtedly built to keep out invading enemies. To the common people of the empire, who had been forced to build the wall, it was not worth it, however. The wall, and other public works completed by the Qin Dynasty, had caused great losses of wealth and human life in the country. As a result, an angry population rose up in rebellion against the Qin Dynasty, and in 207 BC the Han Dynasty began. Because of its rich history and magnificent appearance, the Great Wall attracts tourists, scientists, and historians to this day and will continue to do so for generations.

I would much rather live in the city than in the country. Living in the country would be very boring and there wouldn’t be the same opportunities as there are in the city. It is obvious that most people agree with me because most people choose to live in cities. In the city, there are plenty of things for teenagers to do. They can go to the cinema as often as they like. Because there are so many cinemas in a small area, they have lots of choice about what to see. There are plenty of other activities too. Teenagers can go rollerblading or iceskating. They can go to skateboard parks, to swimming pools or to video arcades. There is also plenty of choice in the city. For example, there are lots of restaurants to choose from. If you wanted to, you could have food from a different country every night of the week. In the city, you can meet many interesting people from all walks of life, and from many different countries. For example, at my school, we have students from India, several Pacific islands, Greece, Italy, the Philippines, Vietnam and Lebanon. Facilities are much easier to get to in the city as well. Whatever you need, you can find close by. There are baby health clinics in every suburb, police stations everywhere, and youth clubs within a few kilometers of your home. A city is exciting, convenient and always changing. There is always plenty to do and see, and lots of different people to meet. I love the city I live in and I wouldn’t live anywhere else.

Despite the modern desire to be easy and casual, Americans from time to time give thought to the language they use, to grammar, vocabulary, and official languages. And, as on other issues, they divide into two parties. The larger, which includes everybody from the plain people to the professional writer, takes for granted that there is a right way to use words and construct sentences and many wrong ways. The right way is believed to be clearer, simpler, more logical, and hence more likely to prevent error and confusion. Good writing is easier to read; it offers a pleasant combination of sound and sense. Against this majority view is the doctrine of an opposing minority, who make up for their small number by their great learning and their place of authority in the school system and the world of scholarship. They are the professional linguists, who deny that there is such a thing as correctness. The language, they say, is what anybody and everybody speaks. Hence there must be no interference with what they regard as a product of nature. They denounce all attempts at guiding choice. Within the profession of linguists there are, of course, fighting factions, but, on this conception of language as a natural growth with which it is criminal to interfere, they are at one. In their arguments one finds appeals to feelings of social equality (all words and forms are equally good) and individual freedom. These beliefs further suggest that the desire for correctness, the very idea of better or worse in speech, is what is left over from noble and times. To the linguists, change is the only rule to be obeyed. They consider it to be equal with life and accuse their critics of being clock reverses, enemies of freedom, menaces to “life”.

There was a time when, if a lady got into a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immediately stand up and bring to offer his seat. But now, things are different. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window, or if he feels a bit shy, hide behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone else gets off. You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners, though. Gone are the days when women could be referred to as the weaker ones without causing trouble. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men, not just equality in jobs or education, but in social life. Hold a door open for some women and you are likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as weaker ones unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she’ll probably insist on paying her share of the bill. On second thought, that is perhaps not a bad idea. It’s no wonder, then that men have given up some ways of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, the man’s active politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings, rather than as weaker ones or something that can be used to please men. Maybe it is worth women’s while to stand in the bus or train.

Sometimes things happen to you that may seem horrible, painful, and unfair at first, but upon reflection you find that without overcoming those obstacles you never would have realized your potential, strength, willpower, or heart. Illness, injury, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity all occur to test the limits of your soul. Without these small tests, whatever they may be, life would be like a smoothly paved road to nowhere. It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless. If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart, forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart. Make every day count. Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can for you may never be able to experience it again. Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and listen to what they have to say. You can make anything you wish of your life. Create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely no regrets.
