yep, it should be easy for you as you speak hungarian
success

zoligrg89 3. October 2008, 19:31

Thanks.

Do you think it's similar to hungarian, because it's part of the same language family? :D

dantesoft 3. October 2008, 19:41

I love to listen to Finnish. I also like to say "minnakerra" sometimes, does it mean something?

norskblu 3. October 2008, 19:41

How come are you learning Finnish? I`d be interested in Swedish... or even Hungarian (but I didn`t find any books, not even a proper dictionary :frown: ). It`s quite funny... I live in an area where some people speak Hungarian because they have Hungarian roots... And those who don`t have them... how can they learn it?

zoligrg89 3. October 2008, 20:18

@dante:
I couldn't find it in the dictionary..so I guess it doesn't mean anything. Where did you heard that from? :D
You can listen to some basic finnish talking if you want to here or here

@norskblu:
Actually I have been interested in learning finnish language and culture for a long time :D  It's kind of a long story how I got here.. :D
Now, if you want to learn hungarian or swedish, you can start on FSI Language Courses. Luckily for hu. and swe. they have text books and tapes(mp3) too, for download.
It's not the best, but I think it's good for starting
Btw. I have to say, swedish is a tricky language. At least the pronunciation. They write it one way, and say it in another. When I listened to one of thoose swe. tapes I had the feeling I'm hearing a german and a french person talking at once. : ))

and did you meant you didn't find any dictionaries/books on the Internet, or in bookshops(buying) ?

diokenes 3. October 2008, 20:58

Oikein hyvä Zoli, hienoa !

(Ps. dantesoft; minnakerra doesnt mean anything in Finnish. Minä kerron means "i tell" )

zoligrg89 3. October 2008, 21:12

Hey! Thanks for helping out  Kiitos!
Yep, that sounds more like finnish

dantesoft 3. October 2008, 21:58

No idea, maybe it's a village in the North  I repeat it because I love the N and R roll off the tongue.

diokenes 3. October 2008, 22:05

You are welcome Zoli.

Hmm, maybe it was supposed to be "minna kerran"?
"Minna" is a feminine name in Finland and "kerran" means once. Might be...

I searched the libraries in Bv for a book to learn Hungarian by myself (ceva de genul... "Maghiara fara profesor") and I couldn`t find any.

zoligrg89 4. October 2008, 16:05

That´s odd..libraries should have something like that..
But don´t worry, there´s the internet  Maybe you´ll find some ´hungarian for foreigners´ eBook, and print it out

norskblu 4. October 2008, 17:36

I`ll give it a search

diokenes 4. October 2008, 18:34

Here is one Hungarian phrasebook from Monty Python:

ste-ven 4. October 2008, 18:52

Hungarian..is not the usual European stuff !
I have heard this language all my life, still know only less than a dozen
words.
We need real books here

zoligrg89 4. October 2008, 19:17

Jari:
Steven, that's interesting..How come you heard hungarian all your life? :D
Yes..well that's why it's not part of the Indo-European languages(like germanic, neolatin, slavic etc.)

ste-ven 4. October 2008, 19:38

yes man, ...oh, i live in romania, ancestors are from macedonia
Well, a girl promised to teach me....but, you can't count on them :frown:
as we split before beginning...(I mean the lessons ):D

zoligrg89 4. October 2008, 19:42

:D:D

ste-ven 4. October 2008, 19:56

norskblu 5. October 2008, 09:10

 Where can you learn a foreign language very fast? In bed...

kiseno_sora 6. October 2008, 01:58

Owh... I also learn Finnish! But the only I can say is still "Hyvää huomenta", "Hyvää päivä", and another simple greetings...

:frown:

zoligrg89 6. October 2008, 13:34

 Do you learn by your self?

kiseno_sora 7. October 2008, 02:04

No. I hev a friend from Finlandia in Gendou.com and she taught me... But she has been inactive lately... So, I lost my teacher...

bioscoopfan 8. November 2008, 12:46

Good luck with language learning!
@~dantesoft: There's nothing really good material to learn Hungarian (printed, at least), I guess.:-( So You must find a nice Hungarian girl they are claimed to be among the most beautiful in Europe. ;-) 8-O

bioscoopfan 8. November 2008, 12:49

Sorry, I addressed the second part @~norskblu, not dantesoft.;-)

zoligrg89 8. November 2008, 14:37

Thanks bioscoopfan
For Dan and Anna Maria:

I found this accidentally (I was looking for something else), it might be useful.

norskblu 8. November 2008, 19:43

Hey, bioscoopfan !. I am a girl... a romanian girl, just as beautiful as a hungarian one P:. I guess I should find a hungarian guy, right? :sherlock: :jester:  :jester:

Zoli, thanks for the link!

bioscoopfan 8. November 2008, 20:13

Hi norskblu! I wrote my advice w/ '...claimed to be the most beautiful girls...' (I don't discriminate btw.!) I didn't know Your gender then. Now You said You're a girl (Anna Maria?:-)), it's different, of course but I haven't heard anything similar about Hungarian boys.:-) So You probably will have a hard time finding a good (looking? competent? potential?:-)) teacher.:-(

norskblu 8. November 2008, 21:11

:sherlock: What you are saying is very strange`cause I`ve heard only good things about Hungarian men... They`re not easy to deal with but they always know what they want.

bioscoopfan 8. November 2008, 23:59

So You know someone who met someone who knew some Hungarian men!;-) I don't know - being a Hungarian man myself;-) - but it seems there are stereotypes everywhere.:-D

ste-ven 9. November 2008, 01:06

She says you're GOOD, and you say....hmm ?? What is that ?

   say:of course, YES :D

norskblu 9. November 2008, 09:11

Have you considered that I might actually know some Hungarian men, for real? I do, and they`re nice people. The only "stereotypes" I have about them is that they are very skilfull, determined and sharp-minded.. And I think it works for the H-women too, plus their beauty.

bioscoopfan 9. November 2008, 10:54

@~norskblu: I would melt if someone would address me with such compliments!:-D But in what area? And why do You think Hungarian women are the same? You must be very good hearted to think about them this way. And what about the women of Romania?
@~ste-ven: You're right I'm too modest - hahaha! *lol* ;-)

norskblu 9. November 2008, 14:46

Well, I`m not so kind and good-hearted... Theese are the good things I can say about the H-people I know. When it comes about bad things... I guess we all have our own flaws, don`t we? It doesn`t matter where we`re coming from... No more stereotypes, no more prejudice! :D

bioscoopfan 9. November 2008, 15:44

Right! We all have good and bad things in us 'coz we're human.:-)

studio41 6. January 2009, 23:58

I have heard that Finnish is difficult to learn. My grandfather came to US from Finland, but never again spoke the tongue. Too bad.

zoligrg89 7. January 2009, 17:08

Too bad indeed..
But does your grandfather have a Finnish Bible and the Kalevala on his bookshelf?

studio41 7. January 2009, 23:03

He read the Bible many times each day when he would descend our stairs to his room when he would visit. Back then I couldn't understand what would compel him to do that so often. He died many years ago. He never spoke once of the Kalevala.

Have a great day.
