Vehari...State Minister for Information Technology and MNA from NA 168 Vehari Muhammad Ishaq Khan Khakwani Monday resigned from his ministry in protest over President Musharraf’s plan to contest the presidential elections from current assemblies in uniform.
Addressing a press conference soon after handing over his resignation to Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, Khakwani said it was his own decision to resign and no one from amongst the government forced him to do so.
“I think that the President should contest the election on the basis of his performance and not by other means,” he stated.
Expressing profound concerns, Khakwani believed that the ‘uniform’ issue would deepen the current crisis it exists now at national level.
“I suggested time and again that he (Musharraf) should get himself re-elected from fresh assemblies but he was not heard. Now the entire government minds are confused because mine was a perfectly doable idea,” he claimed.
Khakwani further said that even if the re-election in uniform, some way or the other, is accepted or declared constitutional, it would not have any moral grounds.
“We have to develop consensus on all the controversial matters with all the political parties,” he said, adding that talks were underway with Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif and Maulana Fazlur Rehman to reach a ‘package deal’ with them and tone down the political controversies in the larger national interest.
He also clarified that he had resigned only from the ministry and not from the party or the membership of the National Assembly.
“I would support him (Musharraf) only if he doffed his uniform and planned to contest the presidential election after relinquishing the office of the Chief of Army Staff,” he said.
Ishaq Khakwani also showed the copy of a letter that he wrote to President General Pervez Musharraf.
The letter reads, “Dear Mr. President, late night on Sunday 26th August 2007 Prime Minister’s office desired that I see the PM on Monday 27th, which I did. During the meeting, the PM showed his deep concern about my public statements on the present day political morass in the country, in particular on your intention to contest the upcoming Presidential elections in uniform while holding the office of the Chief of Army Staff.
I informed the PM that I had joined the pro- Musharraf forces and contested the 2002 general elections as I sincerely believed that you had all the sincere intentions to serve the country. To me to me you looked different from some of the political leaders and the Army Chiefs who had governed Pakistan. I had joined the PML at my free will on the invitation of Ch Pervaiz Ellahi, who I had never met before. I was not a bank defaulter nor a NAB affected and therefore my only intention for joining the pro- Musharraf forces was to contribute in the government to the best of my ability.”
“I stated before the PM, that I was to realize it later, after joining the Government, that neither my work nor my views were much appreciated. The bad luck is entirely mine that I could not fit in the present system.”
“Under the circumstances, the best what I see for the government and my self is to tender my resignation as Minister of State.”
“I have highest regard for you and wish you the best. May I also assure you that I will still support you being an MNA, in your forthcoming election, if you were to contest these without uniform by relinquishing the office of the Chief of Army Staff.”
When Vehari News asked if he questioned the merit and honesty of all PML leaders when referred that he was not a bank defaulter, Khakwani said it would be up to the media to interpret this statement. He further said that the ‘bank defaulter or NAB affected beings’ was not applied to all PML leaders but there were people who had ‘certain’ reasons for joining this party.
Ishaq Khakwani also claimed that there were serious considerations at President General Pervez Musharraf’s camp that he (Musharraf) should not get himself re-elected in uniform.
When asked, Khakwani said that Musharraf might doff his uniform a day before, on the day or the very next day of his re-election.
Khakwani reiterated that he would support Musharraf’s reelection as an MNA only if he (Musharraf) relinquished the office of the Chief of Army Staff.

VEHARI… Pakistan Peoples Party has failed to bring any new strong candidate on Vehari Tehsil seats once again as party has failed to win any election from here since 1977.
According to Vehari News survey, Pakistan Peoples Party is weaker than ever before in Vehari Tehsil as it has no strong candidates in sight for contesting coming polls. Despite having very huge bunch of political bigwigs and workers at other two Tehsils Burewala and Mailsi, Vehari always remained deprived for popular leadership. PPP workers from Tehsil believed that a particular faction has worked against the party interests and they always discouraged workers through their negative politics, which is why party has failed to win any single national or provincial assembly seat in last 7 general elections. It is important to mention here that despite claiming it to be biggest party of country in some of those elections party had no candidate on Vehari seats.
At present, party has received a huge number of applications for the candidature on different seats of district but district headquarter remained drained of candidates once again. This fact also solidify stand taken by PML factions that Vehari is a fortress of Muslim League.
On the other hand in Tehsil Mailsi PPP has another set back as District President PPP Mehmood Hayat Tochi Khan has lost support of his close relative Tauseef Khan Yousafzai on ticket issue further isolating him in PPP district Vehari. Pathan group which was once considered to be toughest to beat in Mailsi politics has now four factions. One led Mehmood Hayat Tochi Khan, who himself has applied for ticket from NA 170 Mailsi. The faction was of his cousin Azhar Ahmad Khan Yousafzai MNA, who was elected on PPP ticket in 2002 elections but later became ‘patriot’ and now joined PML and vying for getting its candidature for NA 170.
Third group in Pathan Group is of Jehangir Khan Yousafzai’s, who is real brother of Tochi Khan but has joined hands with his political rivals in 2002 polls and was PPP candidate in 2002 on PP 239. Now Tauseef Khan has clashes with Tochi Khan over party ticket issues as Tochi is willing for getting ticket for his close associate Sardar Khan Khichi on PP 239 while Tauseef himself is working for that election since many years.
This rift in Pathan group would certainly help Khichi’s of Mailsi to regain their MNA seat from Mailsi NA 170 constituency
