VEHARI… Election 2008 has revolutionized politics in Vehari as many political bigwigs were lost to newcomers and a large number of voters vote for political ideology instead of Biradarism and Grouping. Poltical pundits expect that PML would vanish from scene in coming few days.
Turn out in Vehari according to official results remained 48.3% which is very handsome keeping in view the present law and order scenario. A large number of voters turned out to select 12 law makers from Vehari. PPPP remained largest beneficiary of any government votes because of its strong candidates while PML got only two seats out of 12 of district. In Pre-Election scenario PML was the strongest party in the district and a number of candidates were fighting tooth and nail for getting ticket of this ‘official’ party. The main groups of district politics, District Nazim Syed Nasim Shah’s group, Khichi Group of Mailsi, Saeed Manais Group and others were all part of PML bandwagon but the results proved otherwise as masses have rejected most candidates of these groups.
District Nazim Syed Nasim Shah’s brother Syed Sajid Shah who was contesting polls as independent candidate with the entire District Government on his back lost to Ch Nazeer Ahmad Jatt (PML), their own find in 2002 elections. Khichi Group’s two NA Candidates of PML lost in both constituencies leaving Khichi’s with absolutely no seat after 30 years. Aftab Khichi lost to Tehmina Daultana PML N in NA 169 and Aurangzeb Khichi Lost to Mehmood Hayat Tochi Khan PPP in NA 170.
Saeed Manais lost on two national assembly seats. Two former ministers State Minister Ishaq Khakwani and Provincial Minister Pir Ghulam Muhayudin lost polls to PPP candidates.
Ishaq Khakwani surprisingly lost his seat to Azeem Daultana, a youngster who was contesting polls for the first time on PPP ticket. The other minister Ghulam Muhayudin Chishti lost elections to Ch Fayyaz Warraich brother of Usman Warraich Tehsil Nazim Burewala.
Other newcomers who became assembly members are Sardar Khan Khichi, Naeem Khan Bhabha, Nausher Khan Langrial and Sardar Khalid Saleem Bhatti.
The future of PML Q is looking bleak in the district as a number of defections are expected in coming few days. Some newly elected Q leaguers would join PML N as most of local bodies Nazim would also decide the same, political observers predicted.

Political situation in the district is changing fast.
NA 167 Vehari 1
NA 167 Vehari 1 is witnessing an interesting political battle as all the political bigwigs of Burewala are directly contesting here and election campaign is in full swing. The win here would decide the fate of future political scenario of whole district.
Ex MNA Nazeer Ahmad Jatt (PML Q Ticket Holder), Syed Sajid Mehdi Saleem (Brother of District Nazim Syed Shahid Mehdi), Ch Qurban Chohan (ex MNA) and Ch Mehmood Akhtar Ghumman (PPP Ticket Holder) are contesting from this constituency. In 2002 polls, there was a one to one fight between Ch Nazeer Jatt and Mehmood Akhtar Ghumman which was won by Nazeer Jatt. Last time, Ch Nazeer Jatt was supported by Syed Shahid Mehdi Nasim and Ch Qurban Chohan in their traditional stronghold but later they all split and divided. Now all four of them have fielded their complete panels in NA 167, making it a mouthwatering contest.
Nazeer Jatt in last five years has carved his place in local politics through his boldness and presence in area. Syed Sajid Mehdi Saleem alias Sajid Shah is the brother of Syed Nasim Shah district Nazim thus having full backing of District Government against PML Q candidate. Syed Nasim Shah also known as king maker of local politics and heads a strong political group all over the district. His group was deprived of PML tickets in most of constituencies but they refused to bow and present in election field as independent candidates. Ch Nazeer Jatt has two Arains as his panelists in PP constituencies in Ch Ijaz Aslam in PP 233 and Aftab Arain in PP 232. On the other hand, Syed Sajid Shah has PML ticket holders Ch Nazeer Arain and Pir Ghulam Muhayudin Chishti as his panelists. PPP candidate Ch Mehmood Akhtar Ghumman last time provided a tough fight to all his opponents and he is a strong candidate this time against divided opposition. His panel comprised of Ch Fayyaz Warraich and Sardar Khalid Saleem Bhatti. Qurban Ali Chohan who was denied PPP ticket also is a candidate from same constituency. He launched his penal which was comprised of Akbar Ali Bhatti and Ahsan Ghumman. One of his penalists Akbar Ali Bhatti has withdrawn in favour of PML candidate Ch Nazeer Arain.
All these political bigwigs have a great experience in local politics that make situation more interesting. These candidates and their supporters are spending huge resources on election campaign that make Burewala a lively city in elections.
NA 168 Vehari 2
Traditional rivals Khakwanis and Daultana’s are at loggerheads again in NA 168 Vehari 2 as split in Daultana dynasty would benefit Khakwanis once again.
NA 168 largely consisted of rural areas with no urban area or Tehsil headquarter falling into constituency limits. Only two towns Machhiwal and Ludden have reasonable population while constituency consists of river belt areas.
In last polls, Ishaq Khan Khakwani of PML has won this seat defeating two women of Daultana clan Shahida Daultana and her cousin PML N Leader Tehmina Daultana. This time PML Candidate Ishaq Khakwani is facing challenge from Tehmina Daultana of PML N and her nephew Azeem Daultana of PPP. Daultana family is divided again in their traditional stronghold constituency thus giving edge to Khakwanis. This time Shahida Daultana has launched Azeem Daultana against her cousin Tehmina. There were efforts underway prior to final list and also later to reach a compromise between Daultana’s so that Ishaq Khakwani can be handled with but interestingly unlike previous elections when Tehmina Daultana had not campaigned in NA 168 and focused on NA 169, this time she is focusing more on NA 168. This has made difficult life of her nephew Azeem Daultana who is working for an agreement between Daultana’s.
While Tehmina Daultana and Ishaq Khakwani are experienced politicians in constituency, Azeem is comparatively a new entrant in this field. His father Zahid Daultana was the first chairman of District Council and in 2005 Local Bodies Elections Zahid Daultana and his son Azeem were elected as UC Nazims. Azeem got PPP ticket with blessing of her aunt Shahida Daultana who enjoyed good relations with Benazir Bhutto. Due to this ticket, he has good panel in PP 235 Nausher Khan Langrial and in PP 234 Sheheryar Khakwani. Sheheryar Khakwani is a close relative to Ishaq Khakwani but is opposing him in local politics.
Tehmina Daultana got elected for two terms from Vehari in 90s but in 2002 her constituency was divided into two. She is candidate from both NA 168 and 169 this time also like 2002. Her panelists include Ijaz Sultan Bandesha from PP 235 and Sikandar Daultana in PP 234.
Ishaq Khakwani was State Railways minister in the outgoing government. Earlier, he was PPP-SB secretary general. His brother Ahsan Khakwani got elected MNA on a PPP ticket. He belongs to an influential landholding family and is enjoying good repute in the area for development work he has done in far off river belt areas. His chances of winning this contest are once again increased due to Daultana’s split. He has PML ticket holders Afzal Kareem Beetu at PP 234 and Nazar Dogal at PP 235.
Another MNA candidate from NA 168 is Bilal Akbar Bhatti. He is the son of two-term MNA, late Akbar Ali Bhatti, and a nephew of former MPA Abdul Hameed Bhatti. He has his panelist, outgoing MPA Khalid Mehmood Chohan from PP 235. Khalid Chohan was denied ticket of PPP and he is contesting this election as independent candidate.
NA 169 Vehari 3
Tough political battle is expected in constituency NA 169 Vehari-3 between PML N Candidate Tehmina Daultana, PML Candidate Aftab Khan Khichi and Independent Saeed Ahmad Khan Manais as all three candidates have enjoyed support of powerful political groups.
The constituency comprised of Tehsil Headquarter Vehari and some union councils of Tehsil Mailsi. It has total voters 320861 out of which 177127 are male and 143734 are female voters.
In last general elections, PML Candidate Aftab Khan Khichi defeated Tehmina Daultana by a narrow margin in an interesting competition where an independent candidate Col R Rafaqat Ali Rana grabbed about 18000 votes that ensured Khichi’s victory. At that time, Aftab Khichi enjoyed full support of his father Mumtaz Khan Khichi District Nazim. This time situation is entirely different as Aftab’s father is no more District Nazim as he was defeated by Syed Nasim Shah in 2005.
Aftab Khichi facing a stiff challenge not only from PML n Candidate Tehmina Daultana but also from their old ally and now staunch opponent Saeed Manais. Saeed Manais is a seasoned politician who remained 1985 Punjab Agriculture minister and 1993 Punjab Assembly speaker. His son Asim Saeed Manais is sitting Mailsi tehsil nazim and another son, Asif Saeed Manais, was MPA in the outgoing assembly. His cousin Mumtaz Ahmad Manais is a minister in the caretaker Punjab government. Saeed Manais remained with Khichi’s in district politics for almost three decades but his desire to run for MNa slot has changed the fortunes as Khichi’s refused to leave any constituency for him out of NA 169 or NA 170. He applied for NA ticket to PML but failed to get ticket along with many other members of District Nazim Group, so he is in contest as independent candidate.
Aftab Khichi claiming his seat again on basis of Sui Gas project and other development work he carried out. He has his panelists PML ticket holders in PP 236 Tahir Iqbal and in PP 237 Javed Iqbal Khichi. Both his panelists remained MPA’a in outgoing assembly. Saeed Khan Manais enjoyed support of strong political groups Mian Khurshid Anwar Group of Tehsil Nazim Saqib Khurshid whose sister in law Nafisa Asif is a candidate from PP 236 and Sargana Group from which Afzal Khan Khichi is contesting in PP 237.
Tehmina Daultana has huge following in this constituency and also has plus point that her opponents are divided. She fought on NA 169 and NA 168 in 2002 polls but lost on both. This time also she is contesting from both these constituencies and focusing more on NA 168 where she is facing her nephew Azeem Khan Daultana. His interest in NA 168 and relatively weal wings in PP 236 Col R Rafqat Rana and in PP 237 Naeem Khan Bhabha might cost her once again.
An interesting aspect of this constituency is that all the main candidates in this constituency are imported ones. Tehmina belonged to NA 168 while Aftab and Manais are from NA 170. Political pundits expect some interesting result from this constituency.

VEHARI…Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that the Islamic forces are ready to hold negotiations with America on equal basis for the establishment of peace but they are not ready to accept the American supremacy.
He was addressing a meeting of his party activists at Madrasa Ishatul Quran on telephone in connection with the election campaign of MMA candidate from PP 239 Malik Muhammad Asghar Manswi here yesterday (Sunday). He said that America was the scion of international imperialism and it was violating human rights throughout the world. He said that the oppressed section of the world was in severe danger at the hands of American imperialism. He said that America was the biggest terrorist in the World and it was tyrannizing the oppressed nations.
He blamed the government for what he described was an extremely limited activity in the peak canvassing period for the February 18 elections. He held the government fully responsible for law and order and alleged that it was constantly keeping a security sword hanging on the political figures to slow down the overall election activity and achieve its targets in the polls.
The regime, he said, wanted to keep the political leaders away from direct interaction with the people in the form of mammoth gatherings and that was why it was extending warnings of suicide attacks on key figures.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that MMA was created to ensure the individual freedom, block the imperialism and to help the poor. He said that MMA enjoyed the full support of the masses and 2002 general elections proved it. He hoped that MMA would once again win with over whelming majority.
He appreciated the performance of MMA during last five years and said the situation would have been worse if MMA had not been in the parliament. He said that MMA would work for the establishment of Shariah rules in the country.
He lashed out at the previous government for its poor performance and said that the country was facing crises. He said it was ultimate result of previous government. He asked the people to vote for MMA in the elections.
