Open Opera United

We are a voice of users reaching "118 and growing".. Features have and gone, but some hold a unique tie that combines our lives into one. For this very reason the very idea of "OpenOperaUnited" was born as a vision of compromise to reach both sides. Without even getting feedback or a poll you started severe the link among us. Why not provide a backdoor that would unlink us from the main server but connect us to an Apache server, Amazon Cloud or each other as SuperComputing. There are options to consider and unfortunately until we come to a compromise the list will continue grow. Sponsors could get involved and even media blitz on a social scale. Opera Software ASA could use this as a strategic play to gain more browser share in the market if they are showing support in a new manor.

IMPORTANT : All Opera Users on version 11 and below activate UNITE & WIDGETS" Start the servers, stream and share..

Open Letter sent to Opera DEV Team:

Morning Hakon,

I have been asked by many to approach the team with our insight on the topic of "Unite". I am one of 121 signatures that are desperately seeking options and solutions to saving something we hold very dear. A short few days ago, I created "Open Opera United" as a vehicle to discuss options and possible suggestions. Going over the forums and direct signatures some did have some interesting ideas which I have shared. But then I realized a bigger potential. If Opera does not want to hold the keys to the servers, if there was a way to patch or open the pathway we could change the server settings to hit our very own IP. Based on another Opera's users blog, they discovered how to adjust the server files so it would bypass Opera's network shows below. So this brings me to my idea that I've conceived based on P2P technology. Why not just use a reversal and allow us the users to piggyback on each other to create the "Open Opera United Network". This will take our the need for a main link and in a all reality make Opera even more faster and reliable. Is the same concept behind Amazon's Kindle Fire, every "Fire" runs on the EC2 servers. I know we are just users, but we have ideas how to make Opera better we just want a chance to show you - Thank you for freeing us from the confines of our day to day troubles. You make our lives better.

Running Opera Unite without an Opera Account

Wednesday, September 21, 2011 12:09:26 PM

Opera Unite
Ever wanted to run Opera Unite on a system without going through Opera's proxies, free domain service, and require an [My] Opera Account? It is a bit cumbersome, but I am going to show you how it is done.

Copy the configuration links below into the address field and press Enter to change the values. Click the Save button
e after each change.

opera:config#WebServer|Enable must be enabled.
opera:config#WebServer|UseOperaAccount must be disabled.
opera:config#WebServer|Device must be set to a valid hostname (a-z, 0-9, and hyphen).

Then restart the browser when you are done. Your new Web server will be running on http://localhost:8840

Your router may not allowed external access to your server, and you may want to share something prettier than your public IP address with your friends. This article explains how to setup your own domain and port-forwarding in Opera Unite.

Please note that the Home application (the home page) sometimes will not be installed when you install Unite in this way. You may still install any application you want and use them. Note that not all application will work without an Opera Account and hostname. This is a limitation on the application side.

I used more Unite and IRC. Voice i have problem with micro, so I used it to read english texts and improve my english speaking/listening. Themes, the "new" ones? I downloaded some and I liked, but in themes page should have two categories, for skins and themes. I don't downlaod by torrent much but it works fine to me when I need.

Dear All,
I am a total newcomer when it comes to opera unite (I love its filesharing capability to turn my browser into a server within minutes) and I am sad to see it go in the future.
One question (I read several comments online about this topic): somebody wrote that in the future opera unite will not be officially supported, but it will be "there" anyway, meaning that if you want you can still use it, but in case of troubles you are left on your own, i.e. you will not get any official support from opera's developers.
This is not ideal, but it sounds still acceptable to me.
Have I understood correctly or opera unite will be gone and unusable by the end of the year?
Cheers

According to the last note from the DEV team, the server controlling Unite will be disabled by end of the year. I have not tried to install the App in version 12. If successfull there maybe a work-around. At the top of my post I included some documentation from another user that was able to bypass the Unite servers using your own IP / DNS settings. Although I was not able to recreate the steps. I'll keep you posted.

Update: Now @ 146 joining the cause. Today will load Opera 12 and attempt to force unite. If this works options are to obtain all unite apps and store them locally to run additional test. Its possible to host the files elsewhere and alternate instructions to connect offsite. A similar project occurred with Jazy.net when they hosted a temp server for those on the PowWow Voice Chat client. Although many features were disabled the basic functions overlapped and responded. This is just one of many ideas occurring, note this adjustment will take time for testing purposes. Additional features can be added as we move along.

We have hit "177" that have signed, we have received no responses from Opera DEV or anyone for that matter other than the users themselves. I have reached out to the Twitter family but having to look at other avenues. As i mentioned in the blog, the Desktop Team has blocked the framework that allowed Unite Apps to be installed. Have not figured out a work around for this situation. Since we are being delayed until the end of the year for this product to be pulled. It may be best if everyone needing to use the app sticks around in Version 11x instead of 12x.

191 - And the number continues to grow. Looking into other channels to get the word out. Hey Opera DEV don't you think we need to meet halfway yet? There are many users not content with this decision, and as I'm seeing it this list will continue to grow in rapid speeds.

OpenOperaUnited: Preserve Opera! Our fight has changed, we need your help. So far "204" have joined our efforts, but we need more signatures to show Opera to not allow Facebook to take over. Much more is at stake then anyone can imagine.

Status: We had a Milestone #250 Signatures are trying their hardest to preserve Opera as IS. Change is normally good, but when you take away something that works it causes a abnormal surge. It seems the marketing that was put into Unite was too early, whereas now there seems to be an awakening of interest. It's not to late to see the potential. Continue to get the word out as we strive daily to make those understand around us what we are facing to loose very soon.

. It appears to be an issue only with Opera. Checked the petition in IE9 and works fine.
