Opera concept demo. Take a look!
Look at this concept that i found on the net.http://rendom.net/opera2/
I think that opera team should take this concept in mind. Or at least contact its author (its not me, nor my friend etc.!)

Well, I can see some good ideas and the skin doesn't look bad either.

Pretty music!
However, I don't see many improvements.
Improved status bar? It doesn't look better than the progress bar when set to "popup at bottom page". Besides, the latter uses no space when the page is loaded!
URL components highlighting? Why not?
Preferences in a page: Interesting.
Overall, this is a very pretty demo.

I just wish the demo was a bit shorter and more explanatory..

And if he made that skin and everything, why didnt he post it here?
The good:
+the Preferences in-a-Tab is really great, and i guess it can be used with the appearance menu too.
+the loading bar in the tabs is very nice
+I also like the mail icon in the right-top corner. Nice touch
The not-so-good:
-too Vista-ish. I guess if this design could be implemented, it would support other skins, so i guess that wouldnt be a minus
- a longer demo, and more explanations, not just a heart-racing soundtrack with few overviews
Still waiting for Ruslan to come over and talk to us about the design and tell us more(but from what i see the concept was made a while ago (pre 9.50 RC, i can still see the left side pop-up what-you-might-call-it and the new tab button is still in the top left side)

Multi - speed dial, and the M2 skin is kinda sexy ! (the way the loading bar are in the tabs too)
Hmm, maybe one day
For the moment, I'd like to see a more sexier contacts panel (and a synchronization for contacs too).
the question is : with all those m2/notes/contacts stuff, isn't opera a PIM now ?

I believe, alone these few ideas and their presentation deserve a closer look for OPERA ASA!
It seems to be worthwhile to delve more into the details, on the work and on the person himself.
Good luck!

- freely positionable toolbars (although I wouldn't like the personal bar so small and beside menu bar)
- animations (looks nice)
- multiple tabs in speeddial
- mailbutton somewhat nice idea, but needs maybe rework
- prefs in pannel/page
- the "save my opera" extended sync button (although syncing should be invisible in the background and not through an extra button)
Contra:
- lame intro and somewhat lame music.
- animations (can hinder workflow - same as window minimizing anims in win - I allways disable them first ^^)
- details not described (how does he switch/toggle pannels?)
- address bar looks somewhat full in some cases (lock + certificate + feed and then the mail icon besides it)
- don't like the mail viev. two "pannels" (one mail pannel, one with the contacts/threads) is too much
- tabs orientation wrong (imo should attach to page, not to address bar
- tabs below address bar (that's simply wrong logic and those fx bastards support it!)
- no playback/pause/mute-function -> watching video more often then once to comment sucks

But they don't do it, and that makes the difference...[ePyBuM]nice design, cool, but useless effects
no ideas to improve usability
That's what any "web 2.0 designer" can suggest
"Vivant sequentes" as we old Latin speakers used to say.
Taking your motto: "no guts, no glory" which is so true...

Hum, is it possible to have the personal bar located this way on opera 9.5 ?
Sunday, 22. June 2008, 10:55:58
The Rewind button is missing! You cant lose a productivity tool in favour of cool looks.

- The little progress bars in the tabs. I open lots of tabs in the background as I read or en mass every day. It's a simple little modification over the current system which changes the appearance of the tab based on the loading status.
-
- The email icon with presumably the number of unread emails waiting.
-
- The colours highlighting the different parts of the URL in the address bar. It suggests some kind of breadcrumbs system - interesting in its own right.
-
- The 85% icon in the Digg.com tab. Some kind of loading indicator?
-
- The Menu Bar and other toolbars behaving in a manner more like toolbars in other Windows programs - the ability to lay two or more toolbars in a row.
-
- The statusbar having a progress bar / address field. Very visually informative. Also, technical information such as bandwidth utilisation will be a boon for techies looking to tweak things. More information is always good providing it is hidden by default as not to scare the newbies.
-
- I like the skin, especially the elements of the address bar, the sidebar and the in-tab information. I'd probably modify it heavily, but I like it primarily because of the new possibilities it brings to the skinning engine.
I don't like:
- A Go button - it's illogical. You're either using the mouse in which case you can use paste & go or paste and then use the keyboard to modify the URL - then you press Enter rather than reaching for the Go button with the mouse. If you're already using the keyboard, you can simply press F2, Ctrl-V or type the url and press Enter. The Go button is entirely superfluous.
-
- Animations such as sliding sidebar or smooth scrolling. It slows things down, uses lots of CPU and looks horrible when it stutters due to other processes using the CPU heavily. So long as I can disable animations, this is minor.
-
- The tabs on the speed dial page for more speed dials. 9 is enough for most, and the speeddial.ini can be edited for others. The reason is...
-
-
- The increased Opera Sync scope. Opera do have finite resources which would be taxed if everyone was to sync their entire Opera configuration.
I'm not bothered by the music or presentation in the slightest. It could be better but the general idea was conveyed well enough. I loved the "Looking for a job"!

Personally, I think that the resources would not be that much compared to the mail offering they have. Maybe even a value add? Say you get Opera Link as it is for free, but as part of the yearly $29 support cost, you'd also get the advanced config sync? That would help pay for the load. Or, allow users to specify their own FTP server?
Maybe offer an Opera Link server with 5 CALs (Opera instances) for $30 or so, and increase for corps, large families etc...? Just some revenue ideas to deal with both making money (I'm sure I'll get flamed by some for these suggestions) and paying for the additional load full config sync might create.

I probably wouldn't use it, sadly. Or for £30 dollars a year (£15) I'd probably buy one out of loyalty.

I was going to say the same thing. Because of Opera's true MDI, tabs have to be above the address bar so when they are detached, you still have access to it. It's more logical as well.

How come you spend time prototyping Opera but haven't been to the forums in 4 years?
Hope this thread encourage you to expand the idea :]

Idea of preferences in a tab is neat as well.
I can see he's also hoping for more synchronisation options as well as speed dial categories (which alot of us want).
btw were you suggesting that you could add widgets to speed dial? coz that would be crazy cool!

This will save some valuble space in the Address bar & everyone will be very happy about having more space for the search engine slot too.
P/S: This actually make the "g + space + search text" method make better sense...

Do you have the skin available. Obviously it won't implement some of the features shown in the video, but the basic skin is cool.
Can you upload it?
